Nicki Van Sickle, program coordinator, aids Kim and Debbie in daily Weekday School operations and provides support for you and your child’s teachers.

Nicki has worked in the field of early childhood education for over nine years. She began her career teaching in the public school system and saw firsthand the importance of a strong preschool education. Her passion for children and their families and her previous dedication as a teacher at the Myers Park Presbyterian Weekday School make her a valuable member of the administrative team.

Originally from Northern Michigan, Nicki graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2001. She and her husband, Scott, were married earlier this year.

Debbie O'Brien is associate director of the Weekday School. Her primary focus is on daily operations, communication and parent relations. Debbie holds a business degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and spent several years in corporate banking at First Union (now Wells Fargo) prior to starting a family.

Prior to assuming her current position, Debbie taught in the Weekday School for nine years and as a teacher in Charlotte Latin’s lower school. She has a true passion for children and a genuine understanding of what you, as parents, are facing as you raise young children today.

Debbie and her husband John have four sons: Jay, a graduate of Wake Forest and a Wells Fargo investment banking analyst; Will, a Wofford College senior; Christopher, a Northeastern University sophomore; and Matthew, a Charlotte Latin junior.

Kim Vanover, the managing director of the Weekday School, provides the school’s overall strategic direction and supervises the full-day program. Her goal is to provide your child and your family with a high-quality learning environment full of discovery, growth and wonder.

As a local, national and international early childhood advocate for the last 22 years, Kim’s diverse experience has ranged from serving as a teacher and regional director, to vice president of program and operations, board member, trainer and speaker.

Kim and her husband, William, have been married 21 years and have three children: Will, Summer and Joshua.

The Weekday School at Myers Park Presbyterian Church is such a special place. The hallways and classrooms are unusually calm and peaceful considering that there are teachers and children everywhere. At the same time, there are sounds of laughter and learning from every corner.

Teachers are well-planned and creative. They work hard to provide the children in their classrooms with daily experiences that will increase their love for learning, through play. They build environments infused with love to give young learners security. They facilitate interactions to develop language, and to elicit questions from children that the children themselves may not have asked.

I watch as a one year old slowly becomes more comfortable with his surroundings, begins to explore on his own, and is fascinated by his ever-changing classroom. I see the promise of a lifelong learner: someone who will continue to explore his world and seek out new information forever.

I watch as a two year old sits content on the floor, building with blocks alongside another child. I see the promise of good social skills: the growing ability to not only work beside, but with, others easily.

I watch as a three year old at the table begins to draw more circular shapes from lines. Suddenly people no longer have arms growing out from their heads, but from their bodies. I see the promise of successful handwriting, and strong fingers that will be able to create amazing stories.

I watch as a four year old class learns about the scientific method. They discover that there are endless possibilities and probabilities. I see the promise of confidence, and the increase of self-esteem that will lead them to not be afraid to fail.

We have so many wonderful opportunities to support the growth and development of the children in our school. We are honored that you have chosen to partner with us in the early childhood education of your child. We will do everything in our power to take full advantage of each and every one of those opportunities.
