Welly Park History Arthur Wellesley, later known as the Duke of Wellington, was a famous Britishsoldier and politician. He rose to fame on June 18, 1815, when he led the 72,000soldier strong British army at the Battle of Waterloo and defeated Napoleon’sFrench army, with help from Prussian allies. The battle took place near the Belgian village of Waterloo, about 9 miles out ofBrussels. Once the battle was won, it ended 23 years of recurrent warfarebetween France and the other countries of Europe. The descendants of the original Duke of Wellington, the 8th Duke and Duchessof Wellington opened Wellington Country Park in 1974 and has been opensince!
