The event has a longerofficial title, but to the ninecountries on five continentswith seven boats and the bil-lions of fans following theircrews over the world it isknown simply as “TheVolvo.”The Volvo Ocean Race
was a success during its May5 to 17 layover in Newport,R.I., the end of the journey’sseventh leg from Brazil toRhode Island, then ontoLisbon, Portugal, before thefinish in Volvo’s ownGothenburg, Sweden.The race, held every three
years, began in Alicante,Spain.“It is really important to
them and it is really impor-tant to us,” said Dave Foster,vice president of marketingand corporate communica-tions of the racers to assem-bled media before a May 15press junket that included a tour aboard Alvimedica, theAmerican boat that was chasing Dongfeng of China, whichedged Abu Dhabi by a mere boat length.The race was as close a finish as the race has seen over any
leg.
A Village for ThousandsFort Adams in Newport was turned into a 30-building vil-
lage where tens of thousands of visitors, many of themschool children on field trips, arrived from all over Americato learn, explore, tour, follow and photograph the racers whoendure the hardest conditions in an ocean race around theworld.For the uninitiated, the Volvo Ocean Race (formerly the
Whitbread Round the World Race) is a yacht race around theworld, held every three years. Originally named after its ini-
tiating sponsor, BritishWhitbread brewing compa-ny, it today carries the nameof its current sponsor,Swedish automobile, truckand construction manufac-turer Volvo.Though the route is
changed to accommodatevarious ports of call, the racetypically departs Europe inOctober, and in recent edi-tions has had either nine or10 legs, with in-port races atmany of the stopover cities. The 2015 race, with near-
ly 39,000 mi. (62,764 km),took nine months to com-plete, and reached a cumula-tive TV audience of 2 billionpeople worldwide.Each of the entries have a
sailing team of nine profes-sional crew who race dayand night for more than 20days at a time on some of thelegs. They each have differ-ent jobs on board the boat,and on top of these sailingroles, there are two sailors
that have had medical training, as well as a sailmaker, anengineer and a dedicated media crew member who sends outvideos, emails and other messages.No fresh food is taken on board, so the crew lives off
freeze-dried fare; they will experience temperature variationsfrom 23 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (negative 5 to 40 degreesCelsius) and will only take one change of clothes. There areno showers allowed on board. Rain is a Godsend.

weeks before the sailing yachts arrived.Dozens of buildings are assembled and lifted into the air
in a few days, including several hospitality tents, anexploratory children’s center, a pavilion, a movie theater, aconcert hall and many more.Racers were extremely grateful for and amazed by
Newport’s hospitality.“It’s you against the competition,” said Foster.
“Temperature, wind, waves breaking. You’re successful ifyou can handle those elements. Twenty-seven days withouta shower, 24/7 on the water, away from your family formonths. It’s amazing, and we are excited to be the sponsor ofthis race.”Volvo bought the rights from Whitfield in 1999. The first
official Volvo race was 2000 to 2001. “The boats left sevenmonths ago. They stop at five continents,” said Foster. “Theycross four oceans, with more than 200 days on the water.”As Volvo guests and media stepped aboard the
Alvimedica, New Zealand bowman Dave Swete, greetedthem with a tour. He showed them the email video system onboard, where a crew member, specially designated to givelive updates of the race, would broadcast over the web toshore bloggers following the race on social media up to thesecond.“We broadcast live and gave live interviews to a bar in
Newport. There is no internet, but we have emails. It keepsus in a good mood as well,” said Swete. “We were in dol-drums in Tahiti, near Antarctica, pretty isolated down there.It’s nice to talk to people out there. Sometimes, you get thefeeling that no one is watching you and someone says overthe wire, ‘we’re watching you.’ We were streaming three-minute videos and seven photos a day for the worldwidemedia and our site.”The six remaining boats (one went aground early in the
race and could not continue) require four hours racing onboard, and four hours off. Crew members constantly shiftfrom bed to stern and back again in a perfectly timed rhythm.The sleeping quarters are very small and slightly claustro-phobic. “The keel is automatic. Everything else is manual,” said
Swete. “Your legs stiffen. When we get ashore, we do a lotof squats and cycling. Our legs are gone. You only walk 200feet. It’s the only exercise we get.”Swete regaled the press with media stories — how one
reporter fell out of the bunk and broke his arm. “There was this other reporter. He was on the toilet,” said
Swete. “We hit a wave and he wasn’t on the toilet anymore.”Native Newporter Nick Dana is the other bowman, along-
side Swete. Coming into his hometown was a tremendousthrill from Brazil before heading out to Portugal and Swedenfor the ninth and final leg.But there was an even greater thrill for Dana. “Rounding Cape Horn [the southernmost tip of South
America] we were in first place. It was the hardest stretch ofocean to get there, finishing the first leg. Any time you havethe lead, that’s your favorite part,” said Dana. “We came infifth here. We couldn’t catch up around Block Island. Therewas no wind.“Coming to Newport, I know the water so well. But there
was no wind. The tide was going out. It took us two-and-a-half-hours to get from Castle Hill to Fort Adams. That’s just500 yards. It was agonizing and very frustrating,” he added.

R & H Gorr Adds Komatsu With Rototilt Attachment to FleetR & H Gorr Inc., a trucking and excavat-
ing company based in Callicoon, N.Y., wasestablished by Ron and Herbert Gorr in1961 and is currently operated by Ron’sson, Mike Gorr. While the trucking portionof the business is mainly stone and black topwith a fleet of six tractor trailers and six tri-axles, the excavating work includes, but notlimited to, residential and commercial siteprep and clearing, foundation and pads,retaining walls, septic and drainage sys-tems, and driveways and ponds.Gorr’s current excavator fleet includes a
Komatsu PC78, a Kubota KX121, aKobelco 210 and a Komatsu PC210equipped with a Rototilt attachment. After watching Rototilt in action at
ConExpo in 2014, Mike Gorr purchased aKomatsu PC210 equipped with a Rototiltmodel RT60B attachment from MikeChason of Pine Bush Equipment. Rototiltalso supplied a universal ditching bucket, ageneral purpose digging bucket and a multi-use by-pass type grapple. The grapple isused primarily for land clearing and stoneplacement for building retaining walls. The Rototilt attachment allows the con-
tinuous rotation and 40-degree side tilt ofbuckets, grapples or other tools. It alsocomes equipped with a hydraulic coupler toallow quick change between any attach-ments, making the excavator a truly flexibletool carrier. Rototilt is available in six mod-els covering excavators up to 33-ton (30 t)capacity.Mike Gorr and operator Todd
Houghtaling have noticed numerous bene-fits with the Rototilt attachment.
“Most excavating work can be done 20 to30 percent faster and generally with one lesslaborer on site. Backfilling and ditching orsloping is much faster and easier.” They also noticed a big benefit in wet
ground conditions where they can spreadand place the material with the excavatorwith minimal machine movements ratherthan pushing material with the dozer. “The universal ditching bucket supplied
by Rototilt is on 80 percent of the time and
we seldom use the dozer now.”As a result of the versatility of the Rototilt
attachment, the utilization of the KomatsuPC210 is more than double what theywould normally see on an excavator,according to the company. Based on theresults of its first Rototilt equipped excava-
tor, R & H Gorr Inc. is now looking at pur-chasing a second, smaller Rototilt model ona Kubota KX080 from Pine BushEquipment.

The worst part of the trip was an early leg, Dana added,when one of the boats hit a reef and were stranded, breakingapart.
“You can’t turn back. You can’t not do it. We watched theboat on the rocks and couldn’t do a thing,” he said. “It wasdifficult to watch and not help. Life is paramount, but wecouldn’t get to their side of the island.”
They knew Newport would be welcoming, but they did-n’t know how much.
“It’s been great,” said Swete, who hasn’t seen his infant inmany months. “The people have been fantastic and we’d liketo return in 2018 if race officials let us. They don’t map outthe new course yet.”
“We had no idea it would be this big,” added Dana. “I’mvery proud.”

Volvo’s Double Density Paving Technology Among the innovations discussed at the May 15 confer-
ence in Newport, R.I. was Volvo’s launch of the IntelligentCompaction System with real-time asphalt density calcula-tions.
Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) recently intro-duced the Volvo Intelligent Compaction (for select Volvoasphalt compactors available on both the Volvo IC and theVolvo IC with Density Direct) at the World of Asphalt inNashville, Tenn.
Volvo IC with Density Direct includes the industry’s firstreal-time density mapping technology.
“Density mapping has been described as the ‘holy grail’ ofintelligent compaction. The first to come up with the tech-nology will be the one to radically advance the paving indus-try, it was said, and that’s exactly what Volvo has done,” saidFares Beainy, research engineer of Volvo CE. “For years,contractors have relied on IC systems with stiffness calcula-tions instead of density, which is not the true metric by which
contractors are evaluated and paid. With Density Direct,operators have real-time access to the metric that ultimatelydetermines the success of their work and density.
Included with the Density Direct system is a calibrationscreen, where users set the target density for the project.Once fully calibrated with data specific to the application,the system produces a calculation that is accurate to within1.5 percent of core sampling.
“This provides a real-time reading of density values over100 percent of the mat.”
This real-time data enables the operator a chance to makeany necessary adjustments while asphalt is being paved.According to Volvo CE, this not only reduces the occurrenceof inadequate densities that drive up project costs, but

Urge Congress to Invest in Highways
Göran Lindgren, president and CEOVolvo CE North America told attendees tothe event that Volvo North America saleswere up eight percent and that sales inEurope were up some 10 percent, on top ofa 22 percent gain last year.This improvement, despite a five percent
drop in the worldwide market due mainly tolosses in sales in China, Lindgren said. “Wehad 39 product launches in 2015,” saidLindgren. “And we also had a successfullaunch of T4 engines. We have improvedproductivity and fuel efficiency in ourmachinery across the board.”Lindgren said that Volvo CE is meeting
customer demands in many new ways, espe-cially in the use of better technology andfairer prices in rental fleets of used equip-ment, keeping customer project costs down.
“We are building a new warehouse inMemphis, Tenn., that will be one millionsquare feet,” said Lindgren. “We will bemoving in July to August. From that hub, wecan get to anywhere in North America in justa few hours, or into Latin America.”A new database and technology advance-
ments will give the customer the ability tosee the history of each piece of previouslyrun equipment, and how the machines aredriven.“They can see data going way back. They
can see how much the machine has beendriven. When was it backed up? Whatrepairs? It is a great tool for us, providingkey information for the customer,” saidLindgren. “This is what the customer hasbeen asking for. We understand this and weare now offering it.”Lindgren added that after the economic
downturn of 2008, many construction com-panies and individuals were gun shy to pur-chase new equipment; there is preferencenow to building their own rental fleet ofmachinery, earth movers, dozers and load-ers.“Does the brand play a role in the rental
industry? I think it does,” said Lindgren. “Ithink our brand does.’Lindgren also said that Volvo is immersed
in lobbying Congress to restore nationalhighway funding. “There is no funding inthe bills now,” he said. “This remains criti-cal. The price in oil and gas is causing uncer-tainty. There are environmental concerns.The frustrating thing is, they know what todo in Washington, D.C., but they can’t get itdone. It is critically important to get that newhighway bill passed.“We’ve been here before. If oil prices
remain in the $60 a barrel range, it’s good for
the consumer at the pump,” said Lindgren.“For us in the industry, it will be okay, butmany companies are scared.”“We have to encourage Congress to pass
a long-term highway bill,” he said. “Trafficcongestion costs consumers $121 billion ayear. Capital spending on highways androads has fallen each year. We urge infra-structure investments while fostering effec-tive transportation methods. Ultimately, wewould urge the passage of a highway userfee. This would go a long way to solve theproblem and invest in highway constructionlong-term.”

BROOKFIELD, Vt. (AP) A tinyVermont town’s famous wooden float-ing bridge — believed to be the onlyone of its kind in the country — hasbeen rebuilt and was reopened May 23with fanfare, including a parade with abagpiper, high school marching band,oxen team, horses and antique carscrossing the new span. Just not all atonce. The Brookfield bridge on Route 65
— a state highway that is unpavedthrough the village — had been closedfor seven years after its floatation sys-tem started to fail, causing it to be par-tially submerged. Residents are excited about having
the one-lane bridge across Sunset Lakeopened again to vehicles and pedestri-ans as summer approaches in the com-munity of 1,200, where historic homesdot the landscape along the picturesquewater. The bridge has now beenreplaced seven times and the paradewill be staggered to avoid, for the timebeing at least, an eighth. “We’re just thrilled to see it open,’’
said Jane Doerfer, owner of the GreenTrails Inn, across the street from thebridge, which often gets business from
tourists who come to see the bridgeand then decide to stay overnight. She lost a lot of business when the
bridge closed but said she would ratherfocus on the good news that the newbridge is complete. The first floating bridge was built in
1820, by townspeople who strappedtogether logs on the top of the frozenlake, after a man drowned walkingacross the ice, said Perry Kacik, chair-man of the Brookfield Floating BridgeCelebration Committee. When the icemelted, a crude floating bridge was leftbehind. As the bridge was rebuilt over the
last nearly two centuries, technologyimproved. In the last bridge waterstarted to leak into the barrels beneaththe decking and waterlog the foaminside them causing the bridge to sinkslightly to the point where there wasoften a puddle of water in the middle ofit, Kacik said. If vehicles were travel-ing too fast they risked splashingpedestrians walking across the 318-ft.-long bridge on its elevated sidewalks. The new bridge is made of pontoons
and is completely above water. The$2.4 million project was covered by 80percent federal funds and 20 percentstate funding. There are two other floating bridges
in Washington state, though they aremuch larger and not wooden, accord-ing to Jennifer Fitch, a structures proj-ect manager with the VermontTransportation Agency. The newBrookfield bridge is designed to last100 years and has widened sidewalks. “We made sure that this new bridge
provides access to everybody,’’ Fitchsaid. The celebration included food ven-
dors, music, speeches by the governorand U.S. Rep. Peter Welch. A dance inthe evening was planned. On May 24,the Flowting Bridge band performedand area farms were open for tours. The bridge is “very important’’ to
the community, said Orange Countysheriff Bill Bohnyak, a member of thecelebration committee. “Number one: It is a state highway
so people use it on a regular basis. Andmany, many people in our communityand the surrounding central Vermontcome here to fish, swim and in the win-ter time they do the ice cutting,’’ hesaid. “It’s really important here for the lit-
tle town of Brookfield, one of the fewcommunities that does not have a mainstreet that’s paved,’’ he added. “It’s stilldirt and it’s going to continue thatway.’’
