Calgary Healthcare Improvement Network February 2015 Digest and Updates

Inspired by the work of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI), the CalgaryHealthcare Improvement Network (CHIN) was launched to build awareness of the field ofhealth care safety and quality improvement (QI), as well as to implement changes from aninterdisciplinary point of view at all levels of care.

New Feature: Quality Innovator of the Month

Our first Quality Innovator of the Month is Zafira Bhaloo! Zafira is athird year medical student and former president (2013-2014) of theCalgary Health Improvement Network (CHIN). Zafirahas an Undergraduate Degree in Biological Sciences and a Master'sdegree in Paediatrics. She is passionate about quality improvementand patient safety, having done a graduate thesis lookingat "Measurement properties of primary outcome measures in pediatricRCTs: inadequate reporting, insufficient validation''. Recently,she also participated in AEBM projects for quality improvement thatlooked at the identification and care of special patient populations in theemergency department. During her time as president, Zafira enjoyedworking in an interdisciplinary team and supporting her team memberswith their individual goals while working collectivly towards a commongoal

Advice to students:

find individuals and mentors who share your passions and whocan teach you more about your passiondon't let the fear of not knowing enough about a field stop youfrom exploring it - there's always so much to learn and a cleanslate can be the best way to go into it
