Calgary Healthcare Improvement Network February 2015 Digest and Updates Inspired by the work of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI), the Calgary Healthcare Improvement Network (CHIN) was launched to build awareness of the field of health care safety and quality improvement (QI), as well as to implement changes from an interdisciplinary point of view at all levels of care. New Feature: Quality Innovator of the Month Our first Quality Innovator of the Month is Zafira Bhaloo! Zafira is a third year medical student and former president (2013-2014) of the Calgary Health Improvement Network (CHIN). Zafira has an Undergraduate Degree in Biological Sciences and a Master's degree in Paediatrics. She is passionate about quality improvement and patient safety, having done a graduate thesis looking at "Measurement properties of primary outcome measures in pediatric RCTs: inadequate reporting, insufficient validation''. Recently, she also participated in AEBM projects for quality improvement that looked at the identification and care of special patient populations in the emergency department. During her time as president, Zafira enjoyed working in an interdisciplinary team and supporting her team members with their individual goals while working collectivly towards a common goal Advice to students: find individuals and mentors who share your passions and who can teach you more about your passion don't let the fear of not knowing enough about a field stop you from exploring it - there's always so much to learn and a clean slate can be the best way to go into it Stay tuned for upcoming Patient Safety seminars!
