AOAC Centennial Meeting

The centerpiece of the AOACCentennial celebration is the 98th An­nual International Meeting, to be heldOctober 29-November 2, 1984, at theShoreham Hotel, Washington, DC. Dr.Linus Pauling, Nobel Laureate, andPeter Barton Hutt, former GeneralCounsel of FDA and noted regulatoryattorney, will be the key-note speakers;and Dr. Cyril Ponnamperuma, Director,Laboratory of Chemical Evolution,University of Maryland, will be the ban­quet speaker.

Eight symposia are planned for thismeeting: (1) Analysis of Pesticide Prod­ucts for Impurities and DegradationMaterials, Odober 30; (2) Sampling andAnalysis of Fertilizers, October 29-30;(3) Quality Assurance/Quality Controlfor Analytical Laboratories, October30-31; (4) Education for Modern Analy­tical Chemistry, October 29; (5)Physical-Chemical Methods for Deter­mining Antibiotic Residues in Tissuesand Milk of Food Producing Animals,October 31; (6) Environmental Toxi­cology and Chemical Analysis, October31-November 2; (7) Storage, Handling,Disposal of Hazardous Chemicals: ALaboratory Safety Symposium,November 1; and (8) ChromatographicMethods in Drug Analysis of BodyFluids, November 1.

The balance of the technical programwill consist of more than 150 presenta­tions of papers on new techniques,methods, and instrumentation for theanalysis of foods, drugs, pesticides,cosmetics, feeds, fertilizers, myco­toxins, beverages, colors, forensicscience materials, hazardoussubstances, vitamins, water and airpollutants, microbiological and ex­traneous material contamination offoods, and related subjects.

There will also be a scientific equip­ment exhibition. Seventy-five firmsfrom all over the United States will beparticipating. At Exhibitors Night,Monday evening, exhibitors will makeshort presentations on new products.

A number of international organiza­tions were invited to join the AOACcelebration. They will meet at varioustimes during the week of October 22-27.These meetings include a joint Interna­tional Union of Pure and AppliedChemistry (IUPAC) - AOAC Interna­tional Symposium on Harmonization ofCollaborative Studies, a CollaborativeInternational Pesticide Analytical Coun­cil (CIPAC) meeting, InternationalDairy Federation (IDF) Chemical Week,and a meeting of International Organi-

zation for Standardization TechnicalCommittee 134 (ISO/TC 134-Fertilizers).

New Ion/Liquid Chromatographs

Waters Associates, of Milford,Massachusetts, now complements itsleadership in HPLC technology withthe introduction of a new series ofIon/Liquid Chromatographs.

Waters ILC Series Ion/Liquid Chro­matographs combine resin based chem­istry and innovative conductivity detec­tion with programmable solventdelivery to provide total ion analysiscapability with part per billion sen­sitivity. The systems use Waters newIC-PAK resin based columns which of­fer a wide linear dynamic range of lessthan 1 ppb to greater than 500 ppm withno pH limitations on eluent or sampleto accommodate analysis of the com­plete range on inorganic cations andanions.

Waters ILC-1 system features on-linetrace enrichment capability allowingroutine low ppb analyses. Eliminatingthe need for optional controllers, thesystem also incorporates programmablesolvent delivery with capability to con­trol devices such as column and solventswitching valves, sampling pumps, andtrace enrichment valving.

In addition, Waiter ILC Series Chro­matographs are expandable and cornpatible with all Waters instruments andoptions for detections, automated datahandling, and sample injection.

Applications for Waters Ion/LiquidChromatographs include the analysis ofboiler waters, acid rain, photoresists,pharmaceuticals, food, beverages andsurfactants.

Electronic Digital Bench Scales

Florham Park, N.}. (April 20, 1984)­Ohaus Scale Corporation, the leadingAmerican manufacturer of precisionbalances, has announced the introduc­tion of its new Digital Electronic BenchScales. The all-purpose balances featureelectronic speed, digital convenience,"on-site" portability, and a suggestedretail price of $299.

Two models are available-the ModelD5 with 50 lb capacity, and the ModelDlO with 100 lb capacity. These rugged,dependable bench scales are built totake constant industrial use. Full capaci­ty tare enables the user to compensatefor weights being used or taring con­tainers. Powered by 6"AA" batteries,the flexible scales can be usedanywhere-in the shipping depart­ment, production areas, restaurants, orany application that requires large bulkweighings.
