This Lent, CRS Rice Bowl invites you, your family and community to journey
alongside the Good Samaritan, to reflect on the question: Who is my neighbor?
So many of our neighbors are on the move: migrants, refugees, internally
displaced persons, travelers. The Good Samaritan—a traveler himself, one on
the move—shows us what it means to encounter the stranger, to accompany
one in need and become a companion on the journey.
Pope Francis has invited Catholics to build bridges of understanding and
hospitality with migrants and refugees through “Share the Journey” campaign.
Reflections from Pope Francis
“We are always capable of going out of ourselves towards the
other. Unless we do this, other creatures will not be recognized
for their true worth; we are unconcerned about caring for
things for the sake of others; we fail to set limits on ourselves
in order to avoid the suffering of others or the deterioration of
our surroundings. Disinterested concern for others, and the
rejection of every form of self-centeredness and self-
absorption, are essential if we truly wish to care for our
brothers and sisters and for the natural environment. These
attitudes also attune us to the moral imperative of assessing the
impact of our every action and personal decision on the world
around us. If we can overcome individualism, we will truly be
able to develop a different lifestyle and bring about significant
changes in society.” (Laudato Si’, 208)
Second Week of Lent - Encounter Cesia
We encounter Cesia in Nicaragua, where, despite a
lack of economic opportunity, young people pursue
their dreams by building businesses to better their
lives. How can you work to improve the lives of others
this Lent? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their
homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit crsricebowl.org to discover
more.

This Lent, become companions on the journey
through daily prayer, weekly fasting and
almsgiving that will change lives. Jesus gives us
the example of the Good Samaritan. With CRS
Rice Bowl as our guide, we set out to encounter
and love our neighbor through the Lenten season.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
We are one community nourished and transformed by the Eucharist.
As the body of Christ, we are led by the Holy Spirit to know, love and serve God and one another.
STEWARDSHIP / CORRESPONSABILIDAD
Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida
Abraham was totally devoted to God and thus willing to
sacrifice his one and only son at God’s command. His
faith in God was beyond comparison; he believed God
would make good on all His promises. Abraham would
withhold nothing from God.
God offered His only Son, Jesus, as sacrifice for us. He
did not spare Him, all for the sake of His people, those of
us created in His own image and likeness. How do we,
God’s children, respond to Jesus’ self-emptying sacrifice
offered in obedience to His Father’s will, despite our
sinfulness?
“Sacrifice teaches us the joy of putting others first, while
it strengthens us to respond decisively to the influence of
the Holy Spirit in our lives. Yielding to God takes guts,
like leaping off a high precipice into pitch darkness. It
feels risky, but when we can’t clearly see what’s ahead
and we choose to entrust ourselves to God’s love, the
rewards are fantastic.”1
Sacrifice is transforming. It can create a beauty deep
within that transfigures us far beyond what any cosmetics
or plastic surgery can possibly accomplish for our
exterior selves. Spiritual beauty is not superficial and will
endure forever.
“Think of an act of charity: helping a sick loved one,
feeding the hungry, offering aid to storm victims, visiting
the imprisoned. All of these acts of love require the gift of
self, from which new life and healing can spring forth in
ourselves and in others.”2
Are we willing to give to God, to give back that
which He has so generously given us? What are we
willing to sacrifice? Where is our true beauty found?

Abraham no retendría nada
¿Qué estamos dispuestos a
sacrificar? ¿Dónde se encuentra nuestra verdadera belleza?

Pastor’s Message by Father Oscar Martin Picos
Buena Noticia, Evangelio encarnado.
presencia tan humana, tan divina…
vida entera. Hacer esta síntesis es entender la transfiguración.

The transfiguration of Jesus reminds us of
His two dimensions: the divine and the
human. As Christians, we need to understand
both aspects of God’s existence.
If we separate Jesus from his divinity because of His
humanity, or vice versa, our picture is incomplete. If we
think that the divine God in heaven does not have time to
attend to human beings, we lose the essence of our
Christian faith—that God became man for our sake.
Perceiving the divine dimension without the human
produces a partial, incomplete image of Jesus, without the
compassion to question or respond to the human heart. If,
on the other hand, we think that when Jesus became human
He became entirely attached to the world, we lose the
transcendence of God because of His humanity. As
Christians, we must embrace both the divinity and the
humanity of the Lord.
Today’s Gospel helps us to grasp this dual existence. In a
spectacular and symbolic way, heaven and earth merge
human and divine appearance. For the human being, this
dual reality of Jesus offers a deep and moving joy.
If, like the apostles, we can experience such a human
presence, so divine, then we can live both aspects of the
Lord's figure and experience. Like Jesus, we can be in the
world without being of the world.
God the Father says: "This is my beloved Son.” As
Christians, our task is to listen intensely and proclaim this
Good News to the world. Reaching this goal will take our
whole life. To make this synthesis is to understand the
transfiguration.
