School board member Judy Colgan, who has represented District 8 since 2000, describes King as “the premier high school of Jefferson Parish” and feels that a combination of factors has brought Grace King to this point. “The problems that Grace King is facing have been driven by magnet

schools. When magnet schools were introduced, m a n y o f K i n g ’ s teachers and highest performing students were moved. This left a void, especially after Hurricane Katr ina. Resurfacing of the D a n d r i g e a c t h a s also changed school boundaries and with that student body has changed,” she said.

When asked what specific steps she is taking to improve Grace King’s performance Colgan said, “We will be introducing different learning methods and additional personnel if necessary. We are doing several things for the school that we hope will prove successful.”

against Colgan for the District 8 position, feels that school board and administration are failing students.

“The performance of the school system has been dropping for a decade and the current administration is unable or willing to change. . .the board has failed to engage in a review of the system and fails to

review existing policy to determine what is working and what is not working and why.”

Delesdernier went on to say, “When I was in high school Grace King was one of the best high schools in the state. We need to strive for excellence and challenge everyone to do better.”
