you will have noted the senior moment I
had by putting the wrong date on the

hopefully it didn’t cause too many problems but PLEASE
remember to bring the ticket with you on Monday 16th
December because of the restrictions we have been forced
to make, entrance will be by ticket only. As mentioned last
month, if you find you are unable to attend for some reason
please would you advise me so that they can be passed on to

GARDENING GROUPS FEBRUARY PRESENTATION
The Deepings School, Lecture Theatre,
21st February 2014 10.00 for 10.30
This year Derek Walker of Astley Country Gardens will
be presenting a talk and
slide show of some glorious
gardens near Stourport on Severn. The presentation
named Tip Toe Through
The Tulips, will feature beds and borders containing
a staggering 20,000 tulips and 110 varieties, with flowers of all
colours shapes and sizes. Also featured will be 5,000 primulas and
violas. It sounds breathtaking. Close-ups of individual varieties will be shown, so that we can see these beautiful flowers up close
and personal.
“The gardens have been planted with an artist’s eye for perfection, shimmering tulips enhance this country cottage garden
wonderfully” This is just one of the quotes from the many articles
written about these gardens. I am sure we will not be disappointed.
Tickets are £3 each and can be obtained from all Gardening Group Leaders or directly from me. This presentation is held during half
term so there should be no problems with car parking.

GROUP NEWS
Advance notice for your diaries! I will be having
a coffee morning for all group leaders at 10.15am
on 30th January 2014 at the Oddfellows Hall
Market Deeping, please join me or send a
representative from your group so that we can
exchange ideas and help each other with any problems. I look
forward to seeing you there.
There has been a good response to the proposed Film Group which
we hope to start up in the New Year. We are also hoping to start a
second Writing Group in the New Year; some members have already
expressed an interest. If you would like to join either of these groups
please ring me and I will put your name on the list.
From January there will be several changes to Group Leaders. Two
groups will have new leaders – Jazz, and Thursday Gardening, many
thanks to Jennie and Chris for leading very successful groups and to the new leaders for coming forward.
The History group leaders will swop roles so Sandra Jones will be
the first contact and Liz Parkinson will support her together with several members who have volunteered to take on a variety of roles
involved in running this very popular group. Thank you everyone.
Alistair Smith will step down as group leader of the Natural History group, there is a planning meeting in December and it is hoped that
another member will come forward to run this group. Wishing you
all a very happy Christmas

U3A DISCUSSION GROUP
We've just discussed the properties we look for in our leaders (and
role models). We don't often reach conclusions from these discussions, hoping to leave with our prejudices largely intact. In this
case, however, there was general agreement that, of the various
attributes discussed (such as intelligence and oratory) the most
important was honesty. (What chance for our expense-cheating MPs then?) En route we wondered about the difference between Nigella
and a banker snorting cocaine!
Meetings are 1100 - 1230, 2nd and 4th Mondays, the next being 13th
January when we'll be discussing Free Schools. If you'd like to 'try'
us do contact Audrey for venue details. Report: IAN TANNER
Group Leader: AUDREY ALLEN
U3A CYCLING GROUP
Walking is a healthy way to see the
countryside.
Cycling enables us to discover more
of our countryside at leisure.
Five riders this month did some 17 miles from Deeping to Langtoft,
Greatford, (skirting Uffington) and
returning to Deeping via Barholm. It
was a sunny day's ride through quiet villages stopping off en-route to
chat (and wait for trains!).
An enjoyable lunch was had on the Deepings trading estate before
heading home.
The pleasant scenic cycle route was organised by Terry Noble.

U3A JAZZ, SWING AND BIG BAND GROUP
Our November meeting was held at the home of
Anne Jones when ten members heard selections of
Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and
Something Blue. Anne started her theme with My Funny Valentine by Dinah Shore/Andre Previn, following with Love For Sale by
Buddy Rich and His Band. Kai Winding with Yardbird Suite was
one not so familiar to us, then a lovely “oldie” Anita O’Day singing
Ten Cents A Dance: Stompin At The Savoy by Edgar Sampson/
Marin Alsop and then In the Mood Richard Fiocca/Marin Alsop.
Something New featured Michael Buble singing The Way You Look
Tonight: Let’s Fall In Love by Diana Krall, then These Are The Days
by Jamie Cullum.
Something Borrowed (from Peter Baylis) Stella By Starlight by Bill
Evans: A House Is Not A Home by Patrick Saussois/Rhoda Scott:
Gentle Rain Martin Taylor: lovely rendition of Deep Purple by Harry James and his Orchestra and Wire Brush Stomp by Gene
Krupa and His Big Band.
The final section Something Blue featured Anne’s favourite
Bluesette by Toots Thielemans: then Mood Indigo by Duke Ellington with Coleman Hawkins: Serenade In Blue by Glen Miller: Good
Time Blues by Count Basie on Piano and finally Trumpet Blues and
Cantabile by Don Lusher and His Band. Thank you Anne for a
lovely morning. The next meeting is our get-together for Christmas
Lunch at The Goat on Tuesday 17th December, 12.15 for 12.30 pm.
From January onwards Peter Baylis has kindly agreed to take over
the Leadership of the Group – Anne remains as Joint Leader.

U3A CRAFT GROUP ONE
Well another year of crafting and putting the world to
rights is rapidly drawing to a close, and to celebrate
our achievements we took ourselves out for a very
nice meal at the Sugar Mill.
Alongside enjoying each other’s company for another year, we have
repeated a few old crafts, and experimented with a few new ones.
Tatting has been the big hit of the year and for those who wish to
take it further, we will continue in the New Year.
There will be no meeting in December, so on behalf of the Craft
Group, may I wish you all A Very Happy Christmas. Next meeting is
on 22nd January at Julie’s.

U3A “BOOK WEEVILS” READING GROUP
On Tuesday November 19th all eight members of the Book Weevils
reading group met at Totty Teas, Towngate, for afternoon tea. We were
served a splendid tea with assorted china teacups, saucers and plates, it
was all very colourful and delicious.
We did find time to discuss our book, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
by Deborah Moggach. We all enjoyed this, which is based on the film of the same name, the book first appeared called These Foolish Things.
It was very tempting to match the characters in the book to those in the
film as the story and people in the book and film are quite different. The
characters are all from various situations in life and rub along well
together once they get to the hotel in India.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 17th December at 2.30 at Cathryn’s
home. Photo: JUNE WHEATCROFT

U3A ANTIQUES AND COLLECTABLES GROUP
We were well entertained at our November meeting by
David Ketteringham, who came to speak to us about
clocks and their mechanisms and brought along several
samples for us to see.
David is a member of The Horological Society, and he told us he started clock making when he came out of the R.A.F. When he was stationed at
RAF Upton he won a Silver Medal for his work on altimeters. On leaving
the RAF he missed the camaraderie and went to work for a time for
David Stacey, a watchmaker and jeweller in Market Deeping. He then
decided to set up his own workshop at his house and took to a 'life on the
road' as he called it, meeting people and inheriting their clock problems.
One lady he was asked to visit had a 1720 Grandfather clock and she told him she was having problems with it. When he arrived at the house and
opened the door of the clock, all the mechanisms, the weights etc. had
been removed, and a shelf had been put in holding bottles of Brandy,
Gin, and Sherry, a hole had been drilled in the cabinet and an electric
movement had been added, all quite a shock to him. The electric
movement just needed a slight adjustment and all was well. The lady
said, "What a clever man you are Mr. Ketteringham!”. It was a very
interesting afternoon, and David gives his fee through the Rotary Club,
for research into Polio.
The next meeting of the Group will be the Christmas meeting on the 16th
December at the Catholic Church Hall at 1-30pm.

U3A WRITING FOR PLEASURE GROUP
Our Writing group held its Christmas meeting on 10th December and we listened to each others’ stories all
entitled ‘A Letter to Santa’ which Jenny had suggested
as our Christmas challenge. Some were funny and some nostalgic, but
all were most enjoyable to listen to. After our meeting we settled down
to enjoy a bring and share lunch round the dining room table. A very
enjoyable social occasion.
We send Christmas greetings to all the other U3A groups.
JUDY ROBINSON Group Leader
U3A THURSDAY GARDENING GROUP
The Thursday Gardening
Group and
partners
enjoyed a highly festive
lunch at
Waterside
Garden Centre, affording the
opportunity for
garden related
shopping as well as a super meal (despite the fact the restaurant had no cooking
gas an hour before we arrived). Everyone was very grateful to David
for organising it all on our behalf. We missed a couple of friends
through holidays and illness and the happy occasion was tinged with sadness as we said good bye to two stalwart members, Pat and
Michael.
Another bitter sweet event was the stepping down of our fantastic group leader, Chris, who has run the gardening group with
efficiency, care and kindness for the last ten years. The group was
delighted to present Chris with a bouquet of flowers and some solar,
colour changing lights for the garden. It is wonderful that, despite no longer being 'Head Gardener', Chris will remain as part of the group.
Linda will take over as group leader and is sure she'll need some
guidance from Chris on occasion!
There is no meeting in January and we meet again on Thursday 6th
February at David and Margaret's for one of their world famous
gardening quizzes.
LINDA HILL
Group Leader
U3A HISTORY GROUP
Sandra and Mary set us our annual challenge – their
quiz! How much did we (and the speakers themselves!) remember of the talks given during the
year? Which castles did we recognize? What did we see on our
London visit? Inventors? Quotations? Famous people? ... As usual,
there was considerable mirth and some chocolates to sustain us. We
did not “reach the top of the greasy pole” (Disraeli) nor even half-
way up but some three chocolate rewards were given out. Challenge
ended!
We also discussed the way in which the group moves forward in January. Various tasks have been shared out amongst volunteer
members to lighten the load and Sandra Jones will take over as main
leader/contact. I will continue in a support role. Thank you so very
much to those who have stepped forward and to all those who
regularly help at each meeting.
Christmas lunch at the Goat will be at 12 noon for 12.30 on
Wednesday December 18th. January’s meeting will be Malcolm
Sadler talking on “Rorke’s Drift”.

U3A “BOOKWORMS” READING GROUP
“The Road Home” by Rose Tremain
A well written book telling of an immigrant from
Eastern Europe and his experience during his first
year in England. A good read recommended by the group.
Our next meeting is at Ann’s home on Monday, 16 December.

U3A “STROLLER’S” WALKING GROUP
Meeting at the Sugar Mill at
Bourne, 15 members of the group, including three new
members, took part in a short
stroll. Fortunately, although
the skies threatened, rain held off for the duration of the
walk. It was also good to see
John Burton, along with Anne,
taking part after a lengthy
break.
Led by Searle Clark, we
crossed the A15 and walked
through Elsea Wood towards Northorpe, where we stopped
for a group photograph, before continuing through part of Thurlby
and returning back to Northorpe Lane. After walking a short length
of this lane, we made our way alongside a field towards the southern edge of Elsea Wood, then alongside the A15 and back to the Sugar
Mill.
For the first time since the group was formed in 2010, we plan to
have a walk in December, which will take place on the last Monday in the month, the 30th. This will give members an opportunity to
venture out after the Christmas festivities, break in their new walking
boots from Santa and get some fresh air before Hogmanay.
The walk will be led by myself and will start from the Red Lion, West Deeping, taking us towards Maxey. This is a change to the
programme issued earlier this year, as the planned walk from
Haconby is likely to be muddy under foot and so will be included in
next year’s programme. Members of the group who would like to take part on the 30th, should contact me, as walk leader, on telephone
01778 345536 during the weekend before. A programme of walks
for 2014 is virtually complete and will be circulated to members
shortly.

GARDENING 4 PETALS & PRODUCE
Our November meeting was held at the
home of Colin Ward at which we
formulated our 2015 programme – or at least we tried! Many good ideas were put
forward and we have almost completed
the schedule. Finding original and
different projects is becoming more difficult each year, but our summer
project for 2014 will be growing
sunflowers. We will be holding a competition to find out who can
grow the largest flower head. Everyone will be given the same variety to grow. It will be interesting to see how we get on. A report
will be published together with pictures.
Thank you Colin for being such a welcoming host and for providing the
delicious refreshments. Our next meeting is our Christmas lunch at
Waterside Garden Centre on Tuesday 17th December, 12 noon for 12.30.

U3A CRAFT GROUP 2
Heather Bumfrey helped us produce three very
different Christmas cards – thank you to her as
always. Next month we will being “doing our own
thing”, possibly just having a cup of tea etc after the Christmas event in
the Coronation Hall! We will meet at 102 Church Street, Deeping St.
James as usual at 2pm.

U3A “PACERS” WALKING GROUP
This month there was no walk but a number of members met in the
snug of the Bluebell Pub in Glinton. Over coffee and biscuits, in front of a raging fire in a comfortable manner, the group planned and
discussed the program for walks in 2014. There was no shortage of
potential walks, venues or volunteers to lead and the completed
program can be viewed on our website. Afterwards some of the
group stayed for a most enjoyable Christmas meal.
Our next walk will be in February. Merry Christmas to all.

U3A ART APPRECIATION GROUP
On 19th November the activity was a “show and
tell” where each member brought one or more
work of art and, in turn, talked about why they had special meanings for them. Most of the items were
paintings, or representations of them, but there were a couple which
were different. Jan Morrell showed corn dollies which her father had made, and Anne Jones a print of a painting about soldiers going off
to WWI which prompted her to write a prizewinning poem which she
then read to us. Although there were only eight members present, we
enjoyed it so much that we resolved to have a similar event so that
more of the group could participate.
There will be no meeting in December and we will meet again at the
R C Church on 21st January for another “show and tell” for those
members who were not able to take part in November’s meeting. We will also review the past year’s activities and plan a series of
meetings for 2014, so members are asked to come armed with ideas.

held their
Christmas
Dinner at the Bluebell at
Glinton on 11th
December. The
ambience was very good and
the meal was
excellent. We
would like to wish all the U3A
members a very Happy Christmas an all the best for the New Year.
Our next meeting is at Angie's on the 8th January 2014 at 10 o'clock.
We will confirm the calendar for 2014 and also have a quiz.

U3A GARDENING GROUP 3
Our November meeting was held at the home of
Pat Dethick and was our planning session for the coming year. After lots of chatter a provisional
programme for 2014 was discussed and several
ideas were put forward with a variety of visits,
some of them will include joint meetings with other groups. We all learn from the visits and pick up good tips on the way. It is always
lovely to see other
gardens and enjoy the beauty that people create.
We thank Pat for her kind hospitality in providing us with delicious
mince pies, fresh cream and jam scones, and other refreshments,
which we all enjoyed and very much appreciated.
Our January meeting will be at Waterside Garden Centre at 10.30 am to finalise our coming events and enjoy some lunch. Please ring
Janice if you will be coming.
As reported elsewhere, on Friday February 21st an organised event
by Eddie Adams will be held at The Deeping School at 10.00 am. The Speaker will be Derek Walker, the owner of Astley Country
Gardens in Warwickshire and the subject will be 'TIP TOE
THROUGH THE TULIPS'. Tickets will be available by each of the
Gardening Groups.
We wish everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY
NEW YEAR.

U3A MONDAY WALKING GROUP
The last walk of the group in 2013 took place
on December 2nd when 31 members assembled at The Goat for our customary ramble around
the byways and footpaths of the Deepings. Our
guide on this occasion was John Smith. Most of us have lived in the area for some time and are very familiar with it but there always
seems to be something to see that you hadn’t noticed before! Lunch
was taken after the walk at The Goat.
Our first walk of 2014 will be on January 6th and will be led by Brian and Nora Littler. We will assemble at The Sugar Mill at Bourne at
the usual time. I will send everyone a reminder after the Christmas
festivities, by which time I guess a few of us will be ready for some
exercise!
Finally I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a
Healthy and Prosperous 2014. I would also like to thank you all for
the support you have given me throughout this, my first year as
group leader – I couldn’t have done it without you!

U3A TEN PIN BOWLING GROUP
Today was a great day at the bowling alley because we had a Christmas Dinner, thanks to Tony and his staff at Bretton. Also there
was some great bowling from a few of us and some disappointments
for others. I think Tony is still putting blue tack under the pins but
there, we all had a good laugh about it and look forward to the next game which will be in the new year on Jan 13th.
The Bowling group would like to wish everybody in the U3A a very
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

U3A GOOD FOOD GROUP
The Foodies Group (11 in total)
started Christmas early by meeting on 2nd December and sharing an
amazing home produced lunch, kindly
hosted by Tony and June Wheatcroft.
Their spectacular main course was pork stuffed with spinach and
mushrooms, with appropriate vegetables.
Before that we had canapés, prawn bisque, and a spinach tart. We
rounded off with cheese and biscuits, two delicious puddings (Lemon Charlotte and Cherry Tiramisu) and coffee with petits fours. All this
was accompanied by appropriate wine, and the costs, shared between
us, amounted to the very modest amount of £13.50 per head.
So home cooking is very economical. We are continuing this theme in January, by cooking family 'winter warmers' recipes. If you would
like to join us for a friendly informal lunch and chat about food
ideas, please contact Kathleen. Photo: JUNE WHEATCROFT

U3A MONDAY READING GROUP
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a reading group in possession of literary inclinations must not be in want of a
theme for their Christmas repast. And so it was, with great
anticipation, that the Monday group met in December in the small
but respectable village of Northborough as guests of Mrs Jones. All were in high anticipation of a delightful assembly with refreshments
in the style of Miss Austen herself and it was with great gratification
that they saw the liberal board spread with the prettiest selection of
fastidious and inviting good things prepared by the members themselves (the servants being given the day off to celebrate the
season as they wished)
White soup provided the first remove and was declared the equal of any served at Netherfield itself. The main courses consisted of a fine
beef ragout, chicken fricassee with rice and an elegant dish of hotch-
potch, whilst trifle with wine, apple puffs and mince pies provided
the sweetmeats and all agreed that the tables at Pemberley could not have seen a more delightful meal nor more affable company, had
Lady Catherine De Burgh had the arranging of it.
A game of charades was the amiable culmination of the event, with
all accepting the challenge, but Mrs Hill carrying off the winner’s trophy, and it was with gratification and many praises for the
excellence of the table and the wit and happy readiness of
conversation shewn by the company that the group called for
carriages and the party broke up in the early hours of the afternoon with many pressing entreaties for a further meeting at Mrs Martin’s
house in January.

U3A FAMILY HISTORY GROUP
No serious family history this meeting. We ate
cake and pies and drank wine etc., as we all do this time of year. A few quizzes to test the brain
for Alzheimer’s and I am afraid not one of the
group passed the test!
Over the next few months when we will be stuck indoors because of the weather we all hope to get down to a bit more serious stuff. We
are hoping to have another bash on the computers as this is such a
fast moving area and so much more information is available. I am
hoping to receive a subscription to the newspaper archive on line as a Christmas present (that’s if Santa thinks I have been a good girl!!)
so will be able to add a different dimension to all our research.
Watch this space!!
I am hoping to do another beginners course if I can gather up enough dedicated people. Anyone who would like to join the course
can drop me a mail and I will explain what we will be doing. Our
next meeting will be on 3 January 2014, 2pm, same time and place.
We would be more than pleased to welcome any new members who
would like to either start or enhance their family history.
Anyone interested in joining our group or just having a chat about
what we do, please give me a call. Anyone who would like any help,
whether a member of the group or not, can contact me. I may not have the answer but I will probably be able to point to the person
who does.
Just remains for me to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Very
Best Wishes for the New Year.

U3A “CHURCH MICE” GROUP
St. Lawrence’s church,
Tallington, presides over a
village formerly well situated for transport links with the East
Coast main line on its west side
and the 17th century Stamford –
Welland canal runninng through it. When twenty five members of
the group visited Tallington on
10th December, they also walked
within the route of the canal and saw the remains of one of its locks,
and the plaques recently erected there to commemorate it.
A church has been on the site from Saxon times with fragments of
this period in the east walls of the transept. There is a simple
Norman doorway within a porch of later date on the south side. The tower which dates from the 14th Century is at the west end but lost
its spire in 1762.
There is a surprise for all who enter the church;
when it was “restored” in the 19th Century the plaster was stripped and the stones of the walls
pointed with red lime mortar. In the nave there are
arcades which date from the Early English period
and the Decorated era. The 13th Century font is plain and octagonal in shape, supported on Early
English pillars and with a spired wooden cover.
In the south aisle, backing onto the porch, is a Dole cupboard
(pictured); a reminder of the times when churches were centres for
dispensing relief to the needy. It incorporates the bequest of Charles
Bertie of Uffington, who died in 1730, to provide 12 loaves of bread
every Sunday for the poor of Tallington for ever. Above this are
racks for the loaves.
In January we will have our 3rd Anniversary meal and in February visit St John the Baptist, Baston. Report: DAVID WRIGHT

U3A LISTENING TO MUSIC GROUP
Our December meeting was at the new home of Ivy
and Jim Pringle, entitled: A Conducted tour—Part 2—
the Stay-At-Homes (plus 1)
The title conveys the fact that this was a follow-on
programme by Jim and all the conductors of the music
we listened to were deemed to be Nazi collaborators and so were banned
from conducting in Europe until they had been through a 'De-Natzification
process.' The 'Plus 1' was Dmitri Shostakovich.
Felix Weingartner conducting the London Symphony Orchestra
for Beethoven's Symphony No.2 in D Major, Op.36, 3rd movement; Scherzo
- Allegro began our tour followed by Vaclav Talich conducting Josef
Suk's 'Serenade for Strings' Op.9, 1st movement, Andante con moto with
there Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Both of these recordings made in
London in 1938. Then Willem Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw gave us a
piece by Mahler, recorded in Amsterdam in 1939.
Other conductors were: Clemens Krauss, Herbert von Karajan, Victor de
Sabata, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Leonard Bernstein conducting his own
composition; Symphony No.1,"Jeremiah", 1st movement, "Prophecy" with
the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Edward Elgar's 'Pomp and Circumstance
March in G Major. Op.39, No.4 was conducted by Sir Henry Wood with 'The
Queen's Hall Orchestra. Then Sir Adrian Boult conducted Ralph Vaughan
Williams, 'Fantasia on 'Greensleeves' with the London Symphony Orchestra,
and we ended with a marvellous 'Symphony No.5 in D Minor, Op.47—4th
movement, Allegro non troppo, conducted by Eugenie Mravinsky with the
Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra.
Jim also gave us many interesting insights into the lives of these composers
which made for a very enjoyable musical journey.
Next meeting on January 8th, 2014 will be at Terry Noble’s home.

U3A THURSDAY WALKING GROUP
For our final walk of the year I led 29 members on a very pleasant local walk
in fairly sunny conditions commencing from Market Deeping and
progressing along the old road to Maxey, around the back of Maxey Mill,
across the fields to West Deeping before returning back to our starting point
along the northern side of the river. We finished off the day with lunch at
The Stone Loach.
We have had another very good walking year with excellent support from
you all. Over the year we have averaged 26 members per walk which is a
very good turnout so many thanks to you all for your participation.
Following the meal we then held our annual planning meeting where a
variable selection of walks were put forward to compile the programme for
2014. I will circulate the programme in due course.
Our first walk for 2014 will be led by Peter and Maureen Jackson on
Thursday 9 January 2014 and will be around the Peakirk and Glinton areas
commencing from the Ruddy Duck, Peakirk PE6 7NF. If you would like to
attend this walk, could you please phone Peter or Maureen by the Tuesday
preceding the walk if possible on 01778 342882 or e-mail jacptr@aol.com
Best wishes to everyone for the festive season and we look forward to the
first walk of next year.
