NEWSMAKERSLloveras technical managerLloveras has appointed CarlesGamisans as their technical manager.

Gamisans joined Lloveras after serv-ing as engineering manager at VelcroEurope SA for seven years, withresponsibility for the technical teamsat the European headquarters of thiscompany. He has 14 years of experi-ence in technical departments in food and other fields.

Carles Gamisans will lead the Lloveras technical teams,taking responsibility for the existing product range tech-nical support and the r & d projects, tasks featured inLloveras’ strategic plan. He has also become a member ofthe Lloveras board of directors.

Field VP sweet business unit of SymriseKevin Field has joined Symrise as vicepresident, sweet business unit, NorthAmerica. Field will be located in theTeterboro, New Jersey office in theUnited States and will report to RayHughes (president, Flavors NorthAmerica). In his new role, he will beresponsible for creating and imple-

menting the strategy for growth within the confectionery,baked goods, mint and dairy categories.

Field brings with him 25 years of experience in thefood industry including 14 years of sweet goods experi-ence in the flavor industry. He started his career in SouthAfrica and has also spent substantial time in the AsiaPacific and the United States.

Angelich joins Virginia DareAnton Angelich has recently joinedVirginia Dare Extract Company asgroup vice president–marketing. Inhis new role he will be responsiblefor domestic flavor marketing andbusiness development.

ADM enhances cocoa processing facility in BrazilArcher Daniels Midland has recently announced that itscocoa processing facility ADM-Joanes in Bahia, Brazil, isin the process of undergoing substantial enhancements.These enhancements include plant process upgrades andproduct line expansion. An ISO 9002 accredited facility,the ADM-Joanes plant produces cocoa powder, liquor,butter and cake product lines for both Brazilian andinternational markets.

Cargill to acquire pectin businessCargill intends to acquire the global pectin business ofCitrico, a manufacturer and international supplier of cit-rus products for the food, beverage and pharmaceuticalindustries.

In 2002, Cargill acquired Cerestar to enhance its capa-bilities in specialty starches and sweeteners. The com-pany then formed a joint venture to ensure access toxanthan gum. By integrating Citrico’s pectin businesswith the Cargill/Cerestar specialty starches and xanthangum business, the company is expecting to be betterpositioned to serve food and beverage companies.

ObituaryJerry O. Roland passed away March 3, 2005, at age 47 aftera 10-month battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife,Jill, and their two children, Taylor and CJ.

Roland had been with SPI since September of 2003 asits marketing director. Prior to that appointment he hadnearly 20 years of experience in ingredients and foods,holding positions at Kraft Foods, Coca Cola, Pfizer/Cul-tor/Danisco and Omega Foods. He was a member of theInstitute of Food Technologists.

Symrise acquires English flavor manufacturer Flavours DirectSymrise GmbH & Co. KG, Holzminden, Germany, hasacquired the British flavor manufacturer Flavours Directin Corby, England.

With the acquisition of Flavours Direct, Symrise isstrengthening its position in Great Britain and Ireland,which are large markets for snacks and savory conve-nience foods.

Founded in 1998, Flavours Direct currently has 38employees and will continue to trade under its currentname as a U.K. subsidiary of Symrise. In 2004 it yieldedannual sales of around 10 million euros.
