National President’s Message
Dear NHRDN Member,
It is with great satisfaction that I present the NHRDN Annual Report for the FY 2016-
2017. Several ideas that had been envisioned to improve the offerings for NHRDN
Members have been materialized while several others are still in progress.
I’m happy to add that the Chapter rejuvenation initiative has been a successful one,
with three Chapters becoming active again. Advisory Boards and Committees that
were constituted also played an instrumental role in mobilizing resources for the
benefit of our member base. Since these Committees were formed out of the need
to enhance NHRDN’s endeavour in capacity building and sustaining itself, there
was no doubt that the products and services which were being worked upon were
ones that are not only relevant to our members, but also to the entire HR
community.
In keeping with our need to make our offerings within the reach of anyone who
seeks the same, irrespective of where one is based, NHRDN’s Digital Connect
initiative has turned out to be a humble beginning. The NHRDN Mobile App was
adjudged first runners up at the ET Telecom Awards 2017. In addition to this,
offerings such as NHRDN Agora – a first of its kind digital platform where a host of
relevant services are offered including building expertise through Professional
Course Certifications, credible business information, access and talk to Industry
leaders through Expert Connect, share your thoughts through Blogs and Webinars
and many more features has started receiving initial traction.
The 20th NHRDN National Conference - ‘Spirit of Entrepreneurship’ held on 3rd –
9th December, 2016 at Bengaluru was conducted by the Bangalore Chapter led by
Mr. Balachandar N - President Bangalore Chapter and Group Director HR - Coffee
Day Group. The Conference was a huge success with a turnout of more than 1000
delegates and speakers from Public and Private Sector Organizations, Academia,
NGOs and Policy Makers coming from across the country and participating in this
event. The Conference also witnessed 3000 individual logins to the NHRD
Conference through the digital live streaming format (another first at NHRDN),
36,00,000+ Tweets & 100 showcase stalls set up at the event. The Conference was
greatly appreciated by one and all.
As we pave the way for the incumbent Leadership Team at NHRDN, I thank
NHRDN’s Past Presidents, Board Members, Chapter Presidents, Members of
various Committees, Resource Persons, Policy Makers, Sponsors, Partners and all
the Members, and look forward to your continued support to NHRDN endeavours.
Best Regards,
K. RamkumarNational President, NHRDN
ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017
05
Dear NHRDN Member,
It has been a deeply gratifying and energising journey of the NHRDN for the past
year, thanks to all the support and good wishes from each of you.
We made big forays into creating products and services that would be a true value-
add for our members. Several new initiatives and programs have been taken up
over the past year. A big thank you goes out to the all the Chapter Presidents who
have made a huge contribution in their Chapters. The all-new Membership
offerings saw our member-base reaching the 12K mark! HRSCAPE competency
assessments were administered both in the workshop mode as well as in-house
mode and was very well received. The launch of the Digital platform of Agora,
www.nhrdnagora.com and NHRDN App added new products to serve the NHRDN
Members and larger HR Fraternity. I would like to compliments to Mr T K Srirang,
Chairperson, NHRDN Product Development Committee, its Members and all
volunteers from various organizations who made it possible !
The Strategic Human Resource Leadership Journey (SHRLJ) 2016 held at Lonavla
was very well received. The Advanced Leadership Programme at Bengaluru was
a success too. The sheer scale of the 20th National Conference and its huge
success, thanks to the Bangalore Chapter and its Office bearers under the
stewardship of Balachandran, was as impactful as it’s success. A host of other
programs were also conducted as per schedule and we look forward to your
support and feedback as to how best we can serve you better in terms of
programs, products and services in the future.
Over the years, The Bersin led NHRDN Human Capital Trends Survey and Report
released in Hyderabad was a huge success. The NHRDN Business Simulation
Games and National Business Leadership Quiz are additions for us to feel good
about. The ability for us to engage and bring more people into the NHRDN fold,
and building capability in participants is something for us to feel good about.
The NHRDN Advanced Leadership Program (ALP 2016) was a huge success with
Resource Persons and participants from various industries sharing their insights
and experience in a 7 day long intervention at Bengaluru.
Our Chapter Connect has been strengthened by way of various initiatives to
nurture these building blocks of the NHRD Network. Some Chapters which were
dormant were rejuvenated, as shining examples of how seemingly minor efforts
towards furthering the Network’s cause can go a long way in ensuring a lasting
impact on the reach and relevance of NHRDN.
Once again, my heartfelt gratitude to NHRDN’s Leadership Team, Board
Members, Regional and Chapter Presidents and the National Secretariat Team
who have supported us to take these initiatives forward during the year.
I look forward to your continued support and active participation as we welcome
the new leadership team of NHRDN!
Best Regards,
S. V. NathanNational Secretary, NHRDN

National Secretary’s Message
06
Dear NHRDN Member,
It has been a wonderful and enriching journey as the National Treasurer of
NHRDN. In the past year, the NHRDN Leadership Team and Board took various
initiatives to strengthen the body and ensure that NHRDN continues to be of
relevance to our members and community.
After the tremendous success of the National Conference that was held at New
Delhi, the 20th NHRDN National Conference – ‘Spirit of Entrepreneurship’ held
in Bengaluru was a phenomenal success with over 1000 participants attending..
The drive to strengthen our Membership base has been a successful one with
the number of members climbing steadily.
As the National Treasurer, I wish to reiterate that for any organization to provide
quality and value in its services, it must have good financial health. In this
reference, as evident from the Audit Report, the past year showed a positive
trend considering the alterations in the calendar of activities, revised offerings
with regards products and services, and despite market fluctuating trends. We
believe in a sustainable revenue stream, important to ensure that our financial
viability is maintained; and I’m sure this trend shall sustain in the time to come.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the National Leadership Team and
the National Secretariat Team for their enduring efforts in supporting us in our
new initiatives and helping us make them a reality. As we welcome the new
leadership team, I urge you to support NHRDN with renewed enthusiasm and
vigour; and request the participation and encouragement of all our members to
make NHRDN a stronger, more vibrant and relevant institution.
Best Regards,

National Treasurer’s Message
07
Dear NHRDN Member,
The year gone by has witnessed several transitions and significant milestones
achieved. I am humbled to add that the tremendous support we have received from all
stakeholders, has been a factor that kept us focussed on making sustained efforts
towards outcomes envisioned and taking us a step closer to reaping the fruit of our
hard work.
The leadership team helmed by Mr. K Ramkumar – National President, NHRDN has
been our rock in ensuring that we stayed on course, with renewed vigor. I take this
opportunity to thank our Leadership Team, Board Members, all Office Bearers and
Members of Committees, Chapter Presidents and all the Members for their support
and commitment to enhance NHRDN’s initiatives as we move forward. I would like to
thank our Former Director General – Mr. Kamal Singh for his exemplary contribution
and wish him all the best in his new assignment. It has been a pleasure and privilege to
work with him and we look forward to work together in the areas of common interest in
his new assignment.
The past year has been one where we fostered new partnerships and made forays into
new realms including accolades won by many of the NHRDN products and services. In
addition to this, as in the past years, the journey of the Network has enhanced the
competitiveness, strengthened the HR Profession and impacted the society through its
multitude of offerings this year too. The NHRDN offerings carried out through the
voluntary association of professionals, in Chapters across the country, many of which
we were able to energize in the past year with the help of NHRDN Agora, NHRDN Digital
App, new Membership plan and HRSCAPE. Professionals from premier Organisations,
on secondment, worked with NHRDN for 6 months and created world class offerings
for the HR Fraternity. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each one of them and
each one of you, for the feedback and ideas that were received, many of which we
worked upon to constantly improve our value addition to our valuable members. Words
will fail me to express our grateful to thanks the Sponsoring Organisations, HR
Leaders, Professionals on Secondment and Volunteers from various organisations
who helped NHRDN to launch new initiatives and all NHRDN endeavours!
We stood committed to our endeavour of capability building, as part of which, we
continued to offer a variety of programmes such as Business Simulations games,
Webinars, Workshops, National Conference, SHRLJ session, Power Breakfast
Meetings, HR Round Table sessions, National Level Quiz programs, Research and
other Training programmes etc. that were conducted successfully. The summary of
last year’s activity has been detailed in this Report, in the following pages.
As we look ahead, I appeal to each one of you to volunteer and co-create NHRDN onsite
and online offerings. Nurtured by committed leaders, as trustees in the years gone by
and for time to come, the core vision remains resplendent a flame that continues to
ignite minds. If we join our hands together, the synergy may surprise our own
perception of our ability to contribute. The journey has just started, and as fellow
traveller, I am looking forward to your continued guidance and support to take National
HRD Network to scale new heights...

Spirit of Entrepreneurship
ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017
The 20th NHRDN National Conference based on the theme of rd thSpirit of Entrepreneurship was conducted on 3 -9
December 2016, at the Palace Grounds venue in the city of
Bengaluru. With India emerging as the 3rd largest base for
start-ups and the city of Bengaluru topping the list as a hub
for the start-up ecosystem and entrepreneurship in the thcountry, the theme of the 20 National Conference - Spirit of
Entrepreneurship was in perfect sync with the whole
concept.
The Spirit of Entrepreneurship helps individuals innovate,
inspire and create. It is the genesis of an enterprise. Over
several conversations and focus groups we found an
operating definition on how the “Spirit” manifests at work – it
is about building a sense of purpose, being agile, getting
things done, ability to take risk, being resourceful, and above
all doing things with passion. Behaviours that are abundantly
exhibited by successful entrepreneurs. This year’s National
HRD Network’s conference celebrates this spirit of
enterprise and explores HR’s role in creating and sustaining
this spirit.
The Conference was spread over seven days with a Pre
Conference Session and a Sectoral Conference held at
multiple venues across Bengaluru.
rd thThe Pre Conference Session was held on 3 -6 December
2016 which featured:
• Masterclass Sessions
• Flagship Programs
• Fireside Chats and
• New Learnings from Industry Immersions
thThe Sectoral Conference was held on 7 December 2016
which featured:
• NHRD National Student & Faculty Conference
• National Edupreneurs Conference
• NHRD NGO-CSR Partnership Summit and
• NHRD HR Leaders Conclave – Re-Imagining HR
th thThe Main Conference was held on 8 -9 of December, 2016 &
was designed with three distinct segments to address the
curiosity of young companies that want to build the DNA of
large organisations and the large ones to learn from nimble
young firms. The theme was spread across three different
contexts:
• Young companies that are Gaining Momentum - typically
those beyond a start-up stage with a unique culture and
spirit.
• Organisations that do well year after year and stay
relevant over time due to their ability to reinvent
constantly – we call them as Sustaining Momentum.
• Finally those who are Re-Imagining Momentum,
organisations that are learning to dance in the midst of
all the disruptions around them.
The Conference was conducted successfully by the
Bengaluru Chapter Team under the leadership of
Mr. N. Balachandar - President, NHRDN Bangalore Chapter
& Group Director HR - Coffee Day Group, with more than
1000 delegates participating in the event. The Conference
also witnessed 3000 individual logins to the NHRD
Conference through the digital live streaming format (which
happened for the first time at NHRDN), 36,00,000+ Tweets &
100 showcase stalls set up at the event .

ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017
The afternoon session of the conference also featured talks
and sessions by the founders of Inmobi and Quess Corp. They
spoke about how a start-up handles its human resource
requirements and how acquisitions can help accelerate
growth. Mr. Ajit Isaac , CMD of Quess Corp spoke about Quess
Corp’s IPO and how it was one of the most successful IPO’s
concluded in recent times.
What followed next was a panel discussion featuring HR
heads from Paperboat, Shopclues, Accel and Airtel. They
shared some salient points that can help start-ups in
managing their human resources. Some of the points
discussed are given below:
1. In start-ups, the founders are usually busy with business
plans and marketing their products so HR takes a
backseat. It thus becomes important for the HR heads to
communicate effectively with the top management.
2. HR is often seen as a barrier, most start-ups do not
understand the importance of hiring the right HR head.
They often do not hire a HR head and instead rely on non-
HR professionals for recruitment which can in the long
run turn into a costly mistake.
3. HR is often the backbone of a successful start-up and
founders would do well to focus on this function. Talent
creates value, not money.
4. HR is not just about hiring. About 50% of HR is concerned
with hiring while the remaining 50% is about retaining
talent, motivating employees and communicating
business goals regularly.
5. Every start-up wants to hire smart people. Too much
focus on just skill sets can lead to lop-sized growth. You
need all kinds of people to make an organization work.
6. Most Start-up CEO’s are averse to lengthy processes, so
HR Mangers should reinvent processes and ensure they
comply with the start-up culture.
The next panel discussion was on the role of HR heads for
start-ups and featured conversations with entrepreneurs
such as Mr. Ravi Gururaj (CEO - Qikpod), Mr Anand Bhaskar
(CEO - Planet Ganges) and Mr Hari T N (Head HR- Big
Basket).
Leadership Team welcoming the delegates to the National
Conference. This was followed by the Keynote address which
was delivered by Prof Ram Charan, a world renowned author
and speaker on human resource management. The morning
session concluded with an awards ceremony where young
achievers from business schools were felicitated with the
Prof Ram Charan Awards.
The afternoon session began with a talk by Mr. Gaur Gopala
Das of ISKON, who spoke on the power of purpose, value
based conscious capitalism, sensitivity based human asset
motivation and spirituality based life handling mechanisms.
He spoke extensively about how employers can create a
conducive environment for employees to prosper. He ended
his talk with an emphasis on the importance of cultivating
spiritual values in an organization and how that would lead to
the propagation of integral humanism.
