Describe transformations of mechanical energy to other forms of energy.

Remember that energy can be categorized as kinetic (something moving) or potential (potential work based on position).

And, the Law of Conservation of Energy says that the total amount of energy in the universe it constant; it might change from one form to another, but energy is never created nor destroyed.

Potential

Motion, elastic potential energy and gravitational potential energy are referred to as mechanical energy.

Other forms of energy include: Chemical Potential Energy Nuclear Potential Energy Light Sound Internal energy (“thermal energy”)

Note: Heat is not a form of energy.

Heat is the transfer of energy from one object to another, from one system to another, or from one place to another.

Part of the elastic PE of the wound spring changes into motion (KE). The remaining PE goes into heating the machinery and the surroundings due to friction. No energy is lost.

Rube Goldberg was a master of energy transformations.

His cartoons depicted very complex machines that did very simple jobs.

Notice that I describe energy transformations in this format:

(type of energy) of (object) becomes (type of energy) of (object)

In the following cartoon, identify at least 10 energy transformations.

Describe them in this format:(type of energy) of (object) becomes (type of energy) of

(object)

Sound and Light don’t have specific objects associated with them.

Write these in your notebook!
