The Changing Face of Breast Cancer:
Resources Available to You
On April 25, Shop Talk presented an extremely useful program to those facing a diagnosis of
breast, as well as other types of cancers. Dana L Viviano, RN, BSN, Oncology Service Line
Director at Ocala Regional Medical Center shared valuable information for patient and
caregiver alike.
Ms. Viviano described the stages of grief experienced by people after receiving a cancer
diagnosis: grief, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance. The whole household
is affected, with family members becoming involved in different ways, and everyone dealing
with varying emotions. Often there are financial hardships. The patient sometimes feels
socially isolated. Dana made it clear that there are many resources available for family as
well as patient. She stressed that caregivers need support and should reach out to find it.
For instance, the Family Medical Leave Act makes it possible for caregivers in some jobs to
receive partial salaries for up to 12 months while caring for a sick relative.
Patients will encounter a number of professionals. A Medical Oncologist diagnoses the
cancer and can coordinate care among the many various caregivers. This doctor will treat
with chemotherapy and hormones. A Radiation Oncologist treats with x-ray therapy when
necessary. A Surgeon will remove the tumor, when advisable. Sometimes patients and
families don’t understand everything a doctor has said during a visit. There are a number of
internet sites that can be trusted for further information, such as cancer.gov, cancer.net,
cancer.org, and komen.org.
Upon diagnosis, a patient should become well informed about her insurance coverage – does
it cover all specialists? What treatments and medications does it cover? There is a lot of
variation among insurance companies, HMO’s, PPO’s, Medicare, etc. It is a good idea to ask
for a case manager from the insurance company to assist with the financial decisions. There
are many avenues of help for financially needy patients – for providers and for drugs and
treatments.
Lastly, Ms. Viviano advised patients and families to find a way to keep the bewildering array
of care information organized. She suggested a dry-erase board as a way to keep important
phone numbers, appointment dates, medications, etc. easily available. She also suggested
keeping a journal, as it is almost impossible to remember daily aspects of symptoms and/or
progress that could be important information in ongoing care.
Many women attended this lunch event at the College of Central Florida who have recently
been diagnosed with cancer, as well as many long-time survivors. Also attending were the
beauty shop operators who make up the core group of Shop Talk. These beauticians update
their knowledge at least two times a year, so that they can pass on life-giving information to
their clients. The Ocala Royal Dames is proud to support the very valuable Shop Talk
program.

Visiting our Research Programs
A number of Royal Dames were hosted by Moffitt Cancer Center for our annual tour and lunch on
April 28. Shirley Fessell began the day by sharing the 25-year pictorial timeline in the main hospital.
The group then proceeded to the new radiation oncology wing. There, we were greeted by Barry
Asch, Program Administrator for Radiation Oncology Services, who gave us an overview of what
happens in the radiation oncology unit and then took the group into one of the treatment rooms. He
showed us one of Moffitt’s latest state-of-the-art radiation treatment machines, which greatly
impressed the entire group. After this, Agnes Manka, Moffit’s Director of Nursing took us to see the
new expansion of Moffitt’s Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit. The group was able to see one of the
actual patient rooms in this new unit, where Agnes explained about the special features needed in
these rooms, such as extra space for family members to stay over with their loved ones and special
air filtration systems required in these rooms to accommodate these patients’ compromised immune
systems.
Following the morning activities, the group headed back to the Stabile Research Building for
lunch. There we were greeted by Dr. Amod Sarnaik, Dr. Shari Pilon-Thomas and Dr. Bill
Janssen. Dr. Sarnaik, whose pancreatic research project is currently being funded by the Dames,
gave a power point presentation and overview of his research project and progress that has been
made. Dr. Pilon-Thomas and Dr. Janssen also talked about the importance of the research,
especially because pancreatic cancer has such a dismal outlook. After lunch, Dr. Janssen gave the
group a real treat by taking us to see Moffitt’s vaccine laboratory, where all of the vaccines for the
various research and treatment protocols are made. Dr. Janssen is a member of Moffitt’s Bone
Marrow Transplantation Program and runs the vaccine lab.
It was a wonderful day, and we were privileged to see a number of new areas not toured in previous
years. We are indebted to Moffitt’s Mary Newton for making this marvelous experience possible.
On October 12, we are invited to visit University of Florida’s Cancer Center on the occasion of ORD’s
annual Visiting Scholar Lecture. This is a program offered to researchers and other medical
personnel at UF/Shands, funded by the ORD Visiting Scholar Endowment. In 2011, the lecture will
be given by Dr. Joseph Mikhael from Mayo Clinic. Dr. Mikhael is a national leader in blood cancer research, and his visit is expected to enhance UF’s myeloma program, which is a National Center or
Excellence. UF graciously invites ORD members to attend these lectures each year. We will also be
treated to lunch. Those who have not yet toured one of the labs will have that opportunity as well
If you have not visited one of our funded institutions, you are missing out on the wonderful experience
of seeing what your hard work and donations are accomplishing. Make plans now for October.
