HELLO, OFFSET IS BACk,
BIGGER & BETTER
THAN EVER! Once again we’ve invited world-class
creative talent to Ireland to showcase their
work, their ideas and their inspirations
alongside their Irish equivalents.
We also want to showcase Dublin
as the vibrant hub of creativity and
original thinking that it can be.
4–5 / OFFSET 2010
Once again we’ve invited world-class
creative talent to Ireland to showcase their
work, their ideas and their inspirations
alongside their Irish equivalents.
We also want to showcase Dublin
as the vibrant hub of creativity and
original thinking that it can be.
It’s not about being another industry
conference. It’s about the power of the
creative process and what happens
when you get great people together in a
room. We’ve selected people for whom
we have the utmost professional respect,
whose work inspires us and gets us excited
about our working lives but also people
we would love to spend time with.
Our programming very much reflects
our own varied creative interests and
because of that we hope it will be
of interest to anyone who believes
there’s always another way to solve a
problem than what has gone before,
those who don’t accept that everything
stays the same just because...
Our ambition for OFFSET and everything
we do is to create something that
challenges and inspires. There is a big
black cloud over the economy and over
all industries within the design world and
we really want OFFSET to be a beacon
of hope and a celebration of creativity.
With live inspiring presentations on the
main stage, debate, Q&A and discourse
in the second room and then engaging
offshoots around the venue and city all
week long we hope OFFSET can be
the spring board to get people
motivated to look to the future.
It’s time for our actions to speak louder
than our words. We have the potential,
the ideas, the energy, it’s just a matter
of making it happen.
Don’t forget to say hello over the weekend!
Bren, Richard and Peter.

directed by Spike Jonze.
‘I’m here’ is a 30-minute short robot
love story set in modern-day LA. It is
a simple, charming tale of (robot) boy
meets (robot) girl. I watched it online
earlier today and was very impressed.
The visual elements of the movie are truly
amazing. The robots don’t look realistic
by any stretch, but that does not matter.
You get the feeling that these are real

together to facilitate an idea generating
workshop in order to investigate
particular needs of Dublin City.
Focusing on the areas of community,
traffic, waste, space and welfare we are
inviting Offset speakers and attendees to
use their creativity and talent to enrich
these areas of the city.
Rather than simply acknowledge the
validity of these ideas we intend to
develop at least one suggestion from
each area for a subsequent happening
due to take place later in the year.

Irish & International Street
Art from the Dublin Area
Over the past 5 years there has been an
explosion of street art worldwide and Ireland
has experienced a growing movement
with several international names creating
pieces in the city as well as local artists
developing into respected figures.
This collection hopes to present Irish and
international street art in the Dublin area.
It is by no means a complete overview
(as the scene is far bigger then anyone
can imagine), but instead is a snapshot of
an underground existing in Irish society.
The exhibition is made up of a gallery show
at Anewspace, specially commissioned
outdoor pieces and a series of walking
tour podcasts by Lauren Teeling & Rua
Meegan, the authors of ‘A Visual Feast;
Irish Street Art’ which is released in October
2010, & Jonathan Lynn from Anewspace
plus several of the participating artists.
Podcast 1: Releasing Thursday 23rd Sept,
Dublin 2 Area & Beyond
Podcast 2: OFFSET Edition: Releasing
Friday 1st Oct, Walk starting at Grand Canal
Theatre including Hanover Quay, Windmill
Lane and on to Tivoli & Thomas Street.
Featuring works by Adw, Asbestos, Canvaz,
Conor Harrington, Cisto, Eelus, Eine,
I Love Lamps, Loki, Karma, Sums, Solus,
Maser, Morgan, Will St. Leger & Xpir.
New Works by Daniel Eatock
Daniel’s show will be a week long process
with two openings. It first opens Friday
24th September as part of Culture Night
with an empty gallery. At the end of the
evening a man on a high performance
motorbike will attempt to draw a perfect
circle in burnt rubber directly on the
gallery floor. In the days following, the
gallery will be used as a studio. Works
will be made and hung in relation to
the floor drawing in preparation for
the second opening on Thursday 30th
September as part of OFFSET2010.
Since Graduating from the Royal College
of Art in 1998, Eatock has flit between
subversive, idiosyncratic and occasionally
whimsical art projects, and commercial
work for the likes of The New York Times
and Channel 4. In collaboration with
Jeffery Vaska, Eatock developed the
ubiquitous website portfolio platform,
indexhibit. He works from London on
largely self-initiated projects.

CHOICE CUTS
A print exhibition of the
letters A–Z by 26 artists
This year we decided we should
‘SHOWOFF’ some of Ireland’s talent, give
the public a good flash of the creatively
well endowed inhabitants of our little
island. This creatively limber group come
from a verity of backgrounds, including
illustration, graphic design, photography,

of whom you will know and some you
really should know, this group includes
Asbestos, Scott Burnett (AAD), Richard
Gilligan, Frankenstyles, James Early
(lnputout), JOR, Gavin Beattie (Tiny Little
Horse), Pamela (Quinnconfrey), Lorcan
Finnegan, Magnus Mudrack, Fergal
Adams, Dave Lawler to name but a few.

a letter of the alphabet, at random,
and asked to create a distinct visual
response. These results will then will be
reproduced as a limited set of prints and
all the works will be on show in Article

creatives to collaborate on
found objects, preferably
from charity shops.
Creatives are asked to team up and
customise an object of their choosing,
so for example a graphic designer
may be teamed up with a painter or
a photographer with an illustrator or a
number of different creatives may work
on one object etc, essentially offsetting
each other’s medium and/or style but
working cohesively on the one object.

any media/solution they wish,
whether it’s graphic design, painting,

The selected pieces will then be exhibited

LOVE WILL
SAVE THE
DAY
An exhibition of portraits
by Aidan Kelly
Robert Capa said that ‘If you’re photos
aren’t good enough, you’re not close
enough’. These portraits from Aidan Kelly
are a selection of works starting from around
1998 to today. Most are candid works
that shy away from posed set ups, trying
instead to catch the subject close up with
that glint in their eye or mid expression
whilst they go about their day. Days like
a very young Arveene at the Shelter, The
Super Furry Animals in the Ambassador,
Terry Hall in Solas or Candi Staton in the
ChoiceCuts office, are days to remember.
Aidan Kelly captures the essence of a
persons ‘good side’ and to show that
you can see this love and respect in their
eyes. Look, they don’t have to say it.

The Irish leg of the 12th Annual Manhattan
Short that will take place at The Sugar
Club on October 3rd from 8pm as well
as over 200 cities across 6 continents.
With screenings being held across North &
South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and
Africa, the 12th Annual Manhattan Short
Festival is now officially the World’s First
Global Film Festival. The ten finalists films
will not only entertain a global audience but
will be judged by them as well. Audiences
at each venue will be asked to vote for
the one film that they think is best, with all
votes being sent through to Manhattan
Short HQ with the winner announced
on Sunday October the 3rd in NYC.
‘We started with one screen on the side
of a truck on a downtown Manhattan
Street twelve years ago. Seeing this
festival now taking place in over two
hundred cities across six continents in one
week is astounding’, said Manhattan
Short director Nicholas Mason.
This year there are ten shorts from ten
separate countries and they will unite an
audience of over one hundred thousand
people across six continents in one week.
Short films not only entertain but give a
wonderful insight into cultures, trends
and the goings on inside the world. I
can think of no better way to utilize the
power and craft of a short film than
‘Manhattan Short’, added Mason.
