History

S Chicago’s Old Town is home to some of the most beautiful and old architecture in Chicago.

Buildings such as St. Michaels Church located in Old Town were some of the only to

survive the Great Chicago Fire.

S One of the oldest CTA ‘L’ stops is also located in Old Park (Sledgewick, build in 1900)

S Throughout the 60’s and 70’s, Old Town was a safe haven for counter culture (hippies) and

the gay and lesbian community.

S Following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, the neighborhood was actually

subject to a considerable amount of racial tension that divided the neighborhood into two

halves (North and South side)
