No one uses libraries anymore … do they?

15% to over 37 million pa• loans increased to over 50 million pa• Internet use in libraries has grown by more
than one third

Your libraries may get busier…
• the ageing of the Australian population– more retirees who have time but limited incomes library use is
likely to increase – with a much larger 85 years and older population demand for
services such as home delivery will increase• e-government and an increasing reliance on the internet to distribute
information and services• multicultural communities requiring materials in community
languages, English as a second language and support for new arrivals learning about living in Australia
• increasing recognition of the vital role of early literacy activities before school begins in developing reading readiness
• the digital divide which limits use of the internet for many people in the community due to a lack of access or skills.
Libraries are a small part of local government … aren’t they?
In 2009/10:• 3.3 million members (46% of the NSW
population)• local govt expenditure = $303 million • state govt expenditure = $25.5 million• 13.7 million library items• open 14,800 hours per week• 2,365 employees

Changes in the book industry
In 2011, the book industry in Australia has experienced a year of unprecedented upheaval, characterised by media reports of the “death of the book” or at least the paper object we recognise as a book, the rapid growth of ebooks, a proliferation of ereader devices, the impact of online retailing and the loss of many local bookstores.
All of these things have impacts for public libraries…

REDgroup went into voluntary administration earlier this year, trailing debts of $170 million. By mid-July, all of its 26 Australian-based Borders stores, along with 114 Angus & Robertson shops, had been shut down, with the loss of more than 2000 jobs. Together, these chains accounted for 20 per cent to 25 per cent of the nation's retail book sales.
