Osteoporosis

• Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass with micro architectural deterioration of bone tissue leading to enhanced bone fragility.• This increases the susceptibility to fracture.• Osteoporosis is a silent disease, reflected only in

a low bone density, till a fracture occurs

Menopause & Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis: Detection and Diagnosis

• A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test is used to diagnose osteoporosis, detect bone loss in its early stages (osteopenia),

• Determine risk for future fracture, and monitor bone changes associated with treatment.

• It is safe, non-invasive and painless, • The test is easy and requires no special

preparation patient's part.

What is a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test?

• A bone mineral density test is an easy reliable test that measures the density, or thickness, of your bones. It measures the amount of mineral (calcium) in a specific area of bone. The more mineral you have in the bone measured, the greater your bone density or bone mass.

A BMD test can:• Measure the density of your bones• Detect osteoporosis before a fracture occurs• Help to predict your chances of fracturing in the future• Monitor the effectiveness of treatments for osteoporosis

Why the Test is Performed

• Bone mineral density (BMD) tests are used to detect osteoporosis, the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time.

• BMD testing or screening should also be done in the following people, who are thought to be at an increased risk for osteoporosis:

• Women over age 65 and men over age 70• Women under age 65 and men ages 50 - 70 who

have risk factors such as:

Risk Factors

• Bone fracture caused by normal activities, such as a fall from standing height or less ("fragility fracture")

• Chronic rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney disease, eating disorders

• Early menopause (either from natural causes or surgery)• History of hormone treatment for prostate cancer or breast cancer• Significant loss of height.• Smoking• Strong family history of osteoporosis• Taking corticosteroid medications (prednisone,

methylprednisolone) every day for more than 3 months• Three or more drinks of alcohol per day on most days

What is low bone mass?

• Low bone mass, often called osteopenia, is not a disease but a condition in which your bone density, or bone thickness, is lower than the average bone density of young healthy adults of your same gender.

• Low bone mass is diagnosed when your T-score is between —1 and —2.5. If you have been diagnosed with low bone mass,
