This introductory course provides an overview ofthedistinctive featuresofnanotechnologyand itsapplications inmedicine.Cutting-edge research indisease screening, diagnosis, treatment, andprevention be will be discussed. Students will beexposed to clinical technologies, as well as thosestill under development. Rotating talks onemerging research will be provided by expertsfromhospitalsandindustry.This is one of five courses offered through theNanomedicine Academy, a partnership betweenNortheasternUniversity,MorganStateUniversity,University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez, TuskegeeUniversity, and Florida International UniversitysupportedbytheNationalScienceFoundation(NSF).ThiscoursewillbetaughtbyleadinstructorsatNortheasternUniversitywithsupportfromfacultyatpartneruniversities.

Everwonderedhowtoscreenforthousandsofdiseaseswithjustasingledropofblood?Orsearchoutanddestroycancercellswithoutsurgeryorchemotherapy?Ortexturematerialstopromotetissueregenerationwhilepreventingimplantrejection?Theseideasmaysoundfuturistic,buttheyarebeingstudiedinlabsrightnow.Nanomedicineistheapplicationofnanotechnologytomedicine.Itisarapidlyexpandinginterdisciplinaryfieldthatseekstodevelopnewandimprovedtechniquesforthescreening,diagnosis,treatment,andpreventionofdisease.Today,nanomedicinesareusedgloballyforpatientssufferingfromarangeofdisordersincludingovarianandbreastcancer,kidneydisease,fungalinfections,elevatedcholesterol,menopausalsymptoms,multiplesclerosis,chronicpain,asthmaandemphysema.Developingnewandeffectivenanomedicinesrequiresanunderstandingofhowbasicbuildingblocksassembledatthenanoscaleallowmaterialstohaveuniqueanddistinctivefeaturesthatarenotpossiblewithbulkmaterials.Thesenanomaterialsinteractwithbiologicalstructuresatthescaleofmolecules,andthushavefoundwidespreaduseforbiomedicalresearchandapplications.Avarietyoftoolsexisttocharacterize,optimize,andpredictnanomaterialinteractionswithcellsandmolecules.Uponvalidationinvitro,nanomaterialsaretestedinvivotobetterunderstandhowtheirdeliveryandfunctionimpactsbehavioratthetissuescale.Ultimately,researchershopetousethesenanomaterialstoimprovethescreening,diagnosis,andtreatmentofdisease,providedthatthenanomaterialscanbeproventobebothsafeandeffectiveinclinicaltrials.

Thereisnotextbookbecausethiscoursedrawswidelyfrompeer-reviewedliteratureandinvestigatescutting-edgeworkinthefieldofnanomedicine.WeeklymaterialswillbeprovidedwithinBlackboard.Additionally,youwillsearchyourlibraryresourcesandthewebaspartofyourassignments.Itisrecommendedthatyouhaveaheadsetthatincludesamicrophoneforthisclass,becausesomeassignmentswillrequireyoutorecordaudio.WewillalsoholdoptionallivereviewandQ/Asessionsduringthecourse.

This course features a variety of interactive classroom and online activities that will allow you toengagewithclassmatesandfacultyatmultipleinstitutions.Theseinclude:OnlineVideo Lectures and Tasks:All lecture content isposted ispostedonline. Eachweekyouwillstartwithoneonlinelecturemodule,supplementedwithavarietyoftasks.Thesetasksareactivitiesthatwill help you engagewith the coursematerials in a variety ofways to enhance your learning.These tasks should be considered as part of the lecture materials and are mandatory. While thelecturesandtasksarenotgraded,the instructorscanmonitorthecompletionoftheseactivitiesandwill factor this intoyourparticipationgrade. It is important that eachweek’s online lectures andtasksbecompletedbeforeclassonFriday!Interactive Lectures: You will attend live classes led by Nanomedicine Academy faculty and guestexpertshostedinyourlocalclassroomonFridays.ThepurposeoftheseFridayclassesistoapplytheknowledge and concepts you learned in the online lecture, so it is very important to complete theweek’sonlinelecturebeforecomingtoclassonFriday.Pleasenotethatattendanceoftheselecturesismandatory forallstudentsenrolled intheground-basedcoursesatNU,UPRM,TU,FIU,andMSU.Wewillbefeaturinghigh-profilespeakersstartingpromptlyat3:25pmEST,sopleasearriveontime!WeeklyAssignmentsandTermPaper:EachweekyouwillbeassignedoneormoretasksthatyouwillposttoyourpersonalblogonBlackboard.Theseblogsarenotopentothepublicbutcanbeviewedbyyour classmates and instructors. The assignments are structured in such a way to help you buildcontentandideascenteredaroundamedicalproblemordiseasethatyouareinterestedin.Attheendofthecourse,youwill integrateyourfindingsandforecaststowriteatermpaperthatdemonstratesyouracquiredknowledge.Theassignmentsandtermpapermakeup40%ofyourgrade.Peer-to-peer Commenting & Response: Each week after posting to your blog, you will review andcommentontheblogsofyourclassmates,aswellasrespondtocommentsmadeonyourblog. Thepurposeofthisactivityistoengageinanactiveandongoingexchangeofideaswithyourclassmates.This portion of the course is your participation grade (15%), so you should give it your full andthoughtfulattention!Midterm:Themidtermisatimed,onlineexamthatassessesbothlearningandcomprehension,withafocus on the three learning objectives above. Youwill haveoneweek to complete the exam. Themidtermis25%oryourgrade.

Burning Questions: Many of you probably have a burning question about some aspect ofnanomedicine. Aspartof your first assignment,weask that you topostaquestionon theBurningQuestionsDiscussionForum.ThecourseinstructorsandTAswillworktoseethatallthesequestionsareansweredbytheendofthesemester,eitherinthecoursematerialsordiscussionforum.GroupMultimediaPresentation:Inthesecondhalfofthesemester,youwillworkaspartofgrouptocreate an 8- to 10-minute narrated multimedia presentation about a peer-reviewed paper innanomedicinethathighlightsakeyconceptcovered inclass. Thispresentationwillbeembedded inyourblogandshouldthereforebecreatedinaformatthatcanbeembedded,suchasVoiceThread.AllinstructionsmaybefoundonBB.Inadditiontocreatingaresourceforothersthatdepictsthepaperina vivid and engaging format, this project serves as an opportunity for you to experiment with andimproveyouruseoftechnology.Thisgroupprojectis20%ofyourgrade.
