Top Cop" award to PFC. Scott Eadie.The agency hosted a benefit on July 12, which

involved participation from surrounding agencies such asRichland County Sheriff's Office, Summerville PoliceDepartment, North Charleston Police Department, Mt.Pleasant Police Department, City of Charleston PoliceDepartment and Hanahan Police Department. The bene-fit will become an annual event to recognize a top copwithin the agencies of S.C., organizers say.

This year all proceeds were donated to the family ofCharlotte Hayes, wife of Dorchester County deputyStephen Hayes. Mrs. Hayes has been battling a rare kid-ney disorder and needs a kidney transplant. Recently,because of her illness, she had her left arm amputated.The family also has an autistic son who needs weeklymedical care not covered by medical insurance. The fam-ily attended Friday's event to receive a $3000 check fromthe proceeds of the benefit.

Third Area Murder in Six Weeks;St. George Man Shot toDeath, Body Dumpedin Colleton Countyby Eagle-Record Staff

Terril AlexanderRiley, age 25, of 341Hudson Road, St.George, was killedSaturday in a shoot-ing at a house at 429Reeves Farm Road,just outside of St.George. An arrestwarrant has beenissued for another St.George man, 23 yearold Brian AlexanderRichburg of 1352Mulberry Road. Itwas the third fatalshooting in the area inthe past six weeks.

According to the incident report, officers respond-ed to the scene on Reeves Farm Road on Sat. night,July 27 and found the home vacant. Officers DavidCarter and Deputy Jessie Boldin said that two wit-nesses arrived on scene about 5 minutes later, tellingthem that the subject, Richburg, had taken the victim,Riley, to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. Thewitnesses told the officers that they had been insidethe home working on their music when they heardfour shots ring out. According to the report, both wit-nesses said that when they went outside to investi-gate, they saw Riley drop to his knees, saying, "I can'tbelieve that you shot me!"

The report continued that the witnesses reportedseeing Richburg put Riley into his black Honda Civic,telling the two men that he was taking Riley to theWalterboro hospital. The witnesses told the officersthat neither one of them saw a weapon.

The officers searched the crime scene for evi-dence, but found no shell casings nor blood.

While the officers were talking to the witnesses,one of the men received a call from the subject, whosaid that he was at work. The witness said he toldRichburg that he had "screwed up," and asked himwhere Riley was. According to the report, Richburgtold the witness that Riley "did not make it," thenhung up the phone. The call came in to the witnessfrom an unknown number. The officers sent DeputyPirkel to the St. George Kentucky Fried Chicken,Richburg's place of employment, to find him. Det.Melendez arrived at the restaurant and took custodyof Richburg, assisted by Sgt. Knight and Lt. Caudle.

In a supplemental report, on Sunday morning,Deputy Boldin reported that he had been informedthat Richburg's car had been found around exit 62 ofI-95 near Walterboro. The officer arrived on sceneand began searching for the victim. The officer saidhe saw an open road gate at Risher Mountain Road.The officer said he entered the gate and began search-ing for tire tracks, finding a set of tracks that indicat-ed a u-turn had been made near the front of the loca-tion. "How does the Council want downtown Harleyville to look in thefuture," was a major topic of discussion during the July Harleyville coun-cil meeting. Mayor Charles Ackerman explained to the council that thereare grants for streetscape improvement within small towns. He chargedcouncil with gathering ideas for future discussions concerning the futurestreetscape development in the business section of town. Several of thecouncil asked about the possibility of underground electrical lines and thehope of landscaping along portions of the main street. The Mayor alsocommented about needing more sidewalks in the town.

Ackerman explained that he is once again actively exploring theoptions of getting funding for a new town complex. He is discussing theissue of funding with several of our local government representatives. Atpresent the existing town hall is dealing with a leaky roof and some otherissues due to the excess of rain recently.

Campers enjoyed the cool stream of water from the St. George Fire Department truck during Thursday’s activities at VictorySports Camp last week. “We registered 294 campers during week, just short of our goal of 300!” laughed camp organizer Brenda Jackson ofScreven Baptist Association. “We saw over 30 professions of faith, including campers and adults. It was a great week!” On Friday, campersand volunteers were treated to a pizza party, compliments of the Town of St. George, at the Town Park.
