Daily Notes

Welcome to Cell City!

This is an Analogy

An analogy is a comparison of two different things, by picking out their similarities

This is to help you remember the organelles and their functions!

Remember!

We are going to compare Organelles (parts of the cell) to parts of the city!

The City Fence protects the city by only allowing necessary things into the city. Everything else is locked out!

The Cell Membrane is like the City Fence because it selects materials like food to allow into the cell. Everything else is left out!

The City Fence

Now Draw IT

The City Hall houses the mayor of the city, and has control of what happens in the city by giving instructions to other people in the city.

The Nucleus is like the City Hall because it contains the DNA and gives other organelles instructions.

The City Hall

The Power Plant turns fuel into energy. The energy is then distributed to the rest of the city for their functions.

The Mitochondria are like the Power Plant because they turn nutrients from food into energy to power the cell.

The Power Plant

The City Roads allow people and goods to get from one part of the city to another as needed. Many buildings are placed along the road for easy access to transportation.

The Endoplasmic Reticulum is like the City Roads because it provides paths for materials to be transported throughout the cell. In addition, there are ribosomes along the ER, like there are buildings along the road.

The City Roads

The Factory builds materials that are needed around the city.

The Ribosomes are like Factories because they build proteins and other materials that are necessary for cell processes.

The Factory

The Post Office allows city residents to mail and ship items around the city.

The Golgi Apparatus is like the Post Office because it packages, stores and ships proteins and other materials around the cell.

The Post Office

The City’s Garbage Trucks pack up, remove, and dispose of waste for the city’s residents.

The Lysosomes are like Garbage Trucks because they break down waste molecules and remove them from the cell.

The Garbage Trucks

The Warehouse is a storage facility for the city. It has enough space to store food, drinks, and waste.

The Vacuole is like the Warehouse because it stores excess food, water, and waste for the cell.

The Warehouse

Now Draw a Line All the Way Across Your Paper Under

Vacuole and Above Chloroplast!

Farms are only in some cities, and they grow crops to help feed the city.

Chloroplasts are like Farms because they are only in plants’ and some protists’ cells and they produce food for the cell from water and carbon dioxide.

The Farm

Like the fence, the City Wall surrounds the city and decides who to allow in and out. Unlike the fence, the Wall is very big and strong.

The Cell Wall is like the City Wall because it provides strength, as well as selecting which materials enter and leave the cell. Cell Walls are only in Plant cells.

The City Wall

What would happen if animals had cell walls?

Rank the following organelles from most important to least. Support why you chose this orderLysosome, Golgi body, Nucleus,

Mitochondria

Did you meet your goal today?4 I can teach someone else about all of the

organelles3 I can remember all of the jobs of organelles

but don’t know the names of all of them2 I can remember most and get the rest with

help1 If someone give me hints I can get it0 I have no idea what you’re talking about

Can you identify the main organelles in a cell.

To identify how each organelle has a specific job to do

Use time wisely. Prioritizing the most important tasks.Checking off the requirements of the lessonWorking on the task at hand

Identify organelles of a cell and explain their specific roles

Goals for today

What are the parts of a cell called?

Describe 3 jobs of organelles?

What do plants cells have that animal cell don’t?

We can add to our Analogy!!!
