“POLLUTION MAY BE

IRREVERSIBLE”An Editorial from manila Bulletin, 1990

What is an Editorial?

• An editorial is an opinion piece written by the senior editorial staff or publisher of a newspaper or magazine. Editorials are usually unsigned and may be supposed to reflect the opinion of the present time.

Components of a Good Editorial

Keep the topic relevant. Finding editorial topics and getting ideas can be among the largest challenges facing any writer, but with editorials the process is often a bit easier than for other types of writing.

Components of a Good Editorial

Use personal opinion. The main difference between an editorial and a news story is that there is room to try to persuade readers with your personal opinion.

Components of a Good Editorial

Feel free to use emotion, but in a limited manner. An editorial written out of anger or another strong emotion is not going to hold the persuasive power of a good article.

Components of a Good Editorial

Use persuasive language. Persuasive writing is one of the key elements of a good editorial

Components of a Good Editorial

Get your facts straight. While there is a limited protection afforded by opinion pieces, there is still a chance of your piece being construed as libel.

Components of a Good Editorial

Try to be entertaining. Keeping all of the above steps of clarity, relevance and fact-checking in mind, there is still room to write in an entertaining manner.

“POLLUTION MAY BE

IRREVERSIBLE”An Editorial from manila Bulletin, 1990

In many industrialized cities, you can drink the water but not breathe the air. In Manila, tap water is not safe to drink and the air may be unfit for human inhalation.

Rachel Garson warned, “The contamination of air, earth, rivers, and sea… is for the most part irrevocable.” Let us not get to this point.

Within Manila, we still see smoke stacks fouling the air of the entire metropolis. And Metro Manila is now under a canopy of polluted air.

Men will learn either to live in harmony with nature or become extinct for this planet will be unfit for human habitation.

Pollution may be the issue that can unite all Filipinos. If we can get together on one issue, then we can be one in solving others and eventually, all national problems.

Pollution has killed more people than all the typhoons and earthquakes combined. Typhoons come and go. Earthquakes are rare…

“But pollution is with us 365 days a year.”
