ADAPTABILITYBy focusing on the available space that is created when removing the clunky components of a traditional DSLR, the body becomes smaller and opens up the possibility of external protection

SELF PRESERVATION

If the camera detects a drop, and there is no contact with the pressure plates located in the handles, it will instinctively retract the arms to protect the body from damage. Should the arms take any damage, they can be replaced rather than an entire body.

BOSUNCOMMUNICATION AID FOR TEACHING SAILING

Improve the training of an athlete.

The sport of competitive sailing is quickly growing among high

school athletes.

Intermural Sailing

WHY SAILING?

It’s a passion of mine! It is a well funded sportBarely any coaching tools

COACHING CHALLENGES

TRADITIONAL COACHING:

CONTROLLED PLAYING FIELD SIMPLE COACHING INTERACTIONSVISUAL REFERENCES

SAILBOAT COACHING:

NO PHYSICAL BOUNDARIES ON LAKE, BOATS CAN LOSE CONTROL

COACH BOATS MUST DRIVE TO EACH BOAT IN ORDER TO COACH

RACES, RULES, AND COURSES AREN’T MARKED. MEMORY IS KEY

RESEARCH TRIPS

Working with Detroit Country Day School’s sailing team, I wanted to see how to make the emerging sport of intermural sailing easier and faster to learn.

I wanted to focus on the critical connection between the coach and the sailing students. Coaching is difficult on the water because the students are spread far across a lake in order to follow the drills. Communication is key.

Eric Ellison Intermural Sailing Coach

Eric Ellison is a seasoned sailing coach, primarily working with youth sailing programs affiliated with the Pontiac Yacht Club, and is spearheading Detroit Country Day High School’s Competitive Sail Racing Team.

Eric has been coaching for the past 12 years, and has started sailing teams at local high schools and reforms sailing programs at regional yacht clubs such as Colombia, Bayview, PYC, and DYC.

PROFESSIONAL INSIGHT

Common drills include tacking, gybing, racing, upwind/downwind, and “round the boat”

Difficult to communicate over water due to noise created by the wind, waves, and sails

Only visual reference to explain drills is shown on land during “chalk talks”

Understanding a drill is important, or else the sailor and group becomes disinterested

COMMUNICATION

Giving directions or advice on the

water is difficult. Often the

student isn’t aware that the coach

is talking specifically to them.

Sailing students learn the most by

using “chalk talks”. This allows for

a visual understanding of what to

do on the water.

VISUAL

The most common accident is

capsizing. If gone unnoticed, the

sail boat can flip 180°, trapping

the sailors underneath.

COACHING AID DESIGN

The design of the coaching aid includes 2 screens. With the angled screens, a sailor can see the information no matter which tack they are on.

DATA SCREENS

RACE SCREENThis screen shows crucial data for sailboat race training. Wind direction, current course, real time leader-boards, and a race clock for tactical decisions.

Information such as heel, heading, speed, and sail status is shown. As well as comments from the acting coach and a visual representation of the hull.

A satellite map, real time boat position, and course marks are displayed to assist the lesson. Goals are shown as well as a summery of the current lesson
