IGNEOUS ROCKS
By Sophia and Danny
HOW IGNEOUS ROCKS ARE
FORMED
I
gneous rocks are rocks formed by the cooling, hardening, and the freezing of lava
or magma
I
gneous rocks may or may
not crystallize while cooling
M
ost of the 700 igneous rocks
are formed under the Earth’s crust
THE ROCK TYPES AND THEIR DIFFERENCES

etamorphic
T
he difference between igneous and metamorphic is that the metamorphic rocks are formed
under pressure and igneous rocks are just cooled off lava/magma.
T
he difference between igneous and sedimentary rocks are that sedimentary rocks are made
of different rocks, animal parts, and plants mushed together to make one rock.
Intrusive rocks:
Solidified inside the
Earth’s surface
As the active volcano
turns into a extinct volcano,
the lava /magma inside
hardens and becomes a
Intrusive Igneous rock
INTRUSIVE AND EXTRUSIVE
ROCKS
Extrusive rocks:
Solidified above the
Earth’s surface.
First a volcano erupts or
magma/lava oozes out the
volcano. Then the
magma/lava cools or
hardens to form a
extrusive igneous rock
Extrusive rocks:
Basalt
Obsidian
Pumice
Rhyolite
Scoria
TYPES OF INTRUSIVE AND
EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCKS
Intrusive rocks:
Diorite
Gabbro
Pegmatite
Granite
