NeilE.Welkerleftusafterashort,butbrave,battlewithcanceronWednesday,Aug.11,2004atage72.Neil,borninDarienCenter,NYonApril21,1932,receivedhisPhDfromWesternReserveinCleveland,OHandmovedtotheChicagoareawherehewasaProfessorofBiochemistry,MolecularBiologyandCellBiologyatNorthwesternUniversityinEvanston,ILfrom1964topresent.Heisnotedforpromotingexcellenceinundergraduatescienceeducationandsupportingstudents'participationintheWindRiverConferenceeachyearinColorado.Heissurvivedbyhislovingwife,FatimaVilich,andherchildren,InesandAdisKurtovic;histhreechildren,ThomasandDouglasWelkerandJenniferBurgerandtheirspousesandchildren;histhreestepchildren,DonandJonPollackandJoAnnCarbrayandtheirspousesandchildren;hissister,ArleneCoccariandbrother,WallaceWelkerandtheirspouses,childrenandgrandchildren;andnumerousniecesandnephews.

ThispastFebruary,TheWindRiverConferenceonProcaryoticBiologylostafriendandanactivesupporter/leader.Dr.UldisStreipshadbeenthelong-timeExecutiveDirectoroftheConferenceandworkedtirelesslyfrom1968to2016tokeeptheconferencemovingforwardasaprinciplemechanismfortheexchangeofcuttingedgescienceandasaplacewherestudentswouldbeofprimaryimportance.

UldiswasBorninRiga,LatviaonFebruary1,1942.In1944,Uldis,hisparentsHugoandElenoraStreips,andolderbrotherLaimonis,fledfromtheirhomelandduetowar.Withnowheretogo,hisfamilylivedindisplacedpersonscampsinGermanyandPolandforsevenyears.TheycametotheUSin1951andeventuallysettledinChicago.HegraduatedValparaisoUniversityin1964withaB.A.inBiologyandChemistryandthenenteredNorthwesternUniversitywhereheworkedonhisPh.D.inthelaboratoryofDr.NeilWelker(oneoftheoriginalparticipantsintheWindRiverConferencewhichwascalledTheTransformationMeetings).Uldisreceivedhisdegreein1969andthenwenttodoapostdoctoralfellowshipinthelaboratoryofDr.FrankE.Young(anotherfoundingmemberoftheTransformationMeetings)atScrippsClinicandResearchFoundation.UldiswhotrulyadoredlifeinSanDiegowasdealtacrueltwistoffatewhenFrankYoungacceptedtheChairmanshipoftheDepartmentofMicrobiology&ImmunologyattheUniversityofRochester,SchoolofMedicineandDentistry.UldishadtoturninplayingvolleyballintheeveningsonthebeachfortheweatherofupstateNY.Luckily,UldiswasrewardedbymeetinghisfuturewifePatriciaWilliamswhoworkedintheDepartmentinRochester;heimmediatelystoppedcomplainingabouttheweather.In1972,UldisbecameanAssistantProfessorofMicrobiologyattheUniversityofLouisville,MedicalCenter.Becauseofhisstate-of-theartresearchandhisoutstandingcommitmenttostudents,heproceededtobepromotedtoAssociateProfessor(1978)andProfessor(1988).HeremainedatULuntilhisretirementtwoyearsago.

Uldisreceivedseveralteachingawards,aswellastheAMWAGenderEquityAward.HewastherecipientofmultipleresearchgrantsandservedasViceChairmanoftheDepartmenttwice(forover10years).Heauthored61peerreviewedjournalarticlesand75chapters,booksandproceedings.Hewasapeerreviewerandaneditor.Hiscommitmenttomedicalstudentandgraduatestudenteducationwasspecificallyrecognizedbyhisuniversity.ThiscommitmenttostudentscarriedovertotheleadershipandguidanceheprovidedduringhisentirecareertotheWindRiverConference.Hemadesurethatstudentswerealwaysfirstandcenterinallconsiderationsandplanningfortheconference.EverythingUldisdidhedidwithpassionandcommitment.Thiswasdemonstratedmostclearlybyhis

commitmenttohisfamily;hiswifePat,hisdaughterKrista,hisson,daughter-inlawandgrandchildrenKrisjans,Sarah,Anja,Zander,Nora&Maia,respectively.UldisneverforgothisLatvianheritageorisloveofmusic.HeworkedtohelpLatviabeforeandafteritgainedindependencefromtheSovietUnionandwasrecognizedforhistirelessworkbybeingmadeamemberoftheLatvianAcademyofScience.Hewasthementorto17M.S.anddoctoralstudentswhotrainedunderhimwhilehewasatUL.Healsoprovidedguidancetocountlessnumberofmedicalstudents.For40years,Uldiswasaproud,loyalbassguitarist,vocalist,andcomedianforthebandCikagasPiecisi,asit

grewfromitsLatvianrootsintointernationalfame.Asmentionedabove,thispastFebruarywelostagreatfriend,scientist,teacher,mentor,LatvianScholar,musicianandmostofallawonderfulhusband,fatherandgrandfather.Uldiswastrulyamenschandheismissed.
