I would like to shame the driver of NP 113-246, an old-fashioned blue car, who dumped two bin bags of dirt and bottles in Champa Place which is a No Dumping Area.
This time round one cant
blame the Municipality as they come weekly to pick up refuse.
Totally disgustedMrs Padayachee I fi nd it rather disturb-ing and shocking to see how offi cials con-
ducted themselves towards Ramsawak Sunker knowing that he has been a devotee for the past 37 years,
I dont see the sense of a person being stopped from praying or coming to the Temple to pray when there is a death in the family because the Temple is so much more of a serene place to fi nd inner peace when losing a loved one.
Sunker truly does show the love and admiration he has for the Divine Mother Shakti as he has done for so many years. Sun-ker did mention that the reason he wanted to fulfi l his vow this year was only because of fi nding inner peace, knowing and being assured that his wife has reached her heavenly abode safely. To my knowledge that was his pillar of
strength. It has really come across that
offi cials now feel that they are more superior at the Temple and they take decisions without con-sulting devotees of the Temple.
Being at the Temple for the 10 day period is really an amazing experience and offi cials really do go out of their way to assist in the prayer procession. It requires them
to be at the Temple from early in the morning until late on a daily basis. I personally admire this.
I feel there is way too much confl ict at the Temple and no one should be superior as it is a place of worship. This has been my fourth year of fi rewalking and piercing which I do in the faith of the Divine Mother Shakti because of a three-year vow. I continued this year making it my fourth. As the years have gone by there are more devotees tak-ing vows so that increases the volume of people coming to the Temple. Obviously there is lim-
ited space available. I strongly believe if there was more order and understanding between offi -cials and devotees then it would not be a place of confl ict any longer.

Last weeks cold and rainy Friday morning turned out to be full of excitement and surprise when the team from Van Schaik bookstore surprised Eastwood Primary learn-ers with goodie bags.
Every year Van Schaik Book-store celebrates World Book and Copyright Day in April by invit-ing learners from disadvantaged communities around the country to participate in activities to embrace a love for books. These activi-ties are done at either the selected bookstores or schools.
This year Van Schaik joined with Jonathan Ball Publishers, Pen-guin and On the Dot to give sto-rybooks to 400 learners between Grade 3 6. Van Schaik also reached out to its suppliers who generously supported this worthy cause to supply each learner with stationery, fl ip fi les and magazines. The contributors were: National
Geographic Kids, Freedom Station-ery, Pilot, National Stationery, Pen-tel, Dala, Flip File, Bantex, Boland Drukpers and Berco Aramex who couriered the items to the partici-pating stores.
Van Schaik Bookstore is a responsible corporate citizen and believes in giving back to the com-munity, said Stephan Erasmus, MD of Van Schaik Bookstore.
Eastwood Primary school princi-pal, Jean Vetter said that they were
indeed overwhelmed by the gener-ous gesture.
Apart from being fi lled with pride to see successful ex students giving back to their school, it is with a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation that we receive this much needed material, said Vet-ter who thanked her ex-pupil Tracy Sebastian (ne Maroney) for bring-ing the initiative to Eastwood Pri-mary.

After exactly 43 years and four months of educating thousands of young minds in the prov-ince, 65-year-old Pietermaritzburg educa-tor, Shantie Ramsunder is putting down the chalk and stepping away from her class-room at the end of this month.
Ramsunder, currently an educator at Orient Heights Primary School said that she will mostly miss her pupils, friends and the school, but is looking forward to doing divine service and giving true light (Sukyo Mahikari) at the Pietermaritzburg Prac-tice Centre. She will be visiting the Sukyo Mahikari main centre in Japan at the end of the year.
Ramsunder will be ending her career on a good note as she describes the school as her home.
Orient Heights is one family. Our prin-cipal, Trevor has such humane qualities and I have let him know that I will always be available to help this school whenever they need it, she said adding that teaching is an honourable and is very rewarding.
The best feeling for me is when you
teach grade ones. You see them come in with fresh minds and by August you see them writing and reading on their own. It is at that time that you truly feel how important and effective your job is, said Ramsunder, adding that it is rewarding when past pupils approach her to tell her about the impact she had on their lives.
Ramsunder began her teaching career at St. Pauls Primary School and moved on to Mount Partridge Primary shortly afterwards. Through the years she taught at Thornville Primary, Northlands Pri-mary, and Union Park Primary and fi nally spent the last thirteen years as the founda-tion phase Head of Department in Orient Heights Primary.
The highlights in her career were intro-ducing Readiness Classes at Union Park and Orient Heights schools; facilitating and monitoring OBE in the foundation phase; planning OBE lessons for the Daily News newspaper; conducting workshops at Regional Level; completing an inten-sive workshop on Materials Development organised by Media in Education Trust and receiving her department certifi cate for 30 year service from her principal, Trevor Naidoo.
I want to thank God for allowing me to complete this journey and thank you to my family and friends for the support. I especially want to thank my Orient Heights fam-ily for the bonds we share and the unity and strength they have shown me over the years, she said.
She now looks forward to spending time with her neph-ews, between Johan-nesburg and Durban, and dedicating her-self to divine serv-ice.

Community Chest has applauded the support from Capital Newspapers and other stakeholders, saying the effort made in the past months had enabled them to reach the R3 million mark which the chest had set for itself.
Community Chest recently announced that the money which had been collected by Community Chest in the past fi nancial year, would be shared among 63 welfare organisations.
In response Capital Newspapers said they were glad to be part of an initiative that has become synonymous with the Pietermaritzburg community.
When we were approached by Community Chest almost a year ago, we were thrilled to take up the project and assist them by creating awareness and supporting them weekly," said Capital Newspapers marketing manager
Ursula Neizel.Part of the information drive included
displaying the donations barometer each week on page 2 in all of the Capital Newspaper publications.
Being a group of community newspapers, we believe that it is vital to support community projects, and the fact that 100% of all monies donated actually go towards the charities Community Chest supports was a huge factor in taking on the project, she added.
Community Chest director Michael Deegan said it was heartwarming to be part of an initiative that made a difference in peoples lives.
Interest generated from the Chests Endowment Fund covers administrative costs.
He urged donors to continue with their support as this was making an impact to many communities in and around Pietermaritzburg.
Capital Newspapers are particulary thrilled that the R3 million required was raised, and we are committed to an ongoing relationship with Community Chest.

If you are looking for an afford-able, value for money vehiclethat stands out from the crowd, consider the new Renault Clio.
Compared to previous Clios, theClio 4 looks radical and is a good-looking car.
The new Clio is based on the DeZirconcept that was unveiled at the ParisMotor Show in October 2010.
No attention to detail has beenspared with the trim and materials usedon the Clio and everything feels andlooks just right.
Laurens van den Acker, director ofRenault Industrial Design, describesthe new Clio as an object of desire withan almost human sensuality. "ts mus-cle structure and curves express thedyanamism of the concept car. Nosharp angles, just curves that make youwant to get closer and caress it."
The Renault diamond badge is larg-er and more prominent on a new blackgrille. LED daytime running lights arenew as are the rear tail light clusters.
Rear door handles are hidden givingthe Clio a coup-like profile, althoughit is still a practical 5-door hatchback, with a decent size luggage compart-ment.
There are three variants in the Clioline-up, the mid Expression and upper
Dynamique models are both poweredby Renaults new three-cylinder 66kWturbocharged petrol engine, and theentry level Autentique by a 55kW four-cylinder petrol engine.
The small 900cc (66kW) turbo-petrol engine is potent and itaccelerates without hesita-tion.
It is also rather fru-gal and Renaultclaims 4.5l/100kmvs its 55kW Aut-entique model at5.5l/100km.
The Clio 55kWAuthentique, whichis a 1.6-litre engine,sells at R149,900while the 66kW TurboExpression at R169,900and the higher specced Dy-namique at R179,900.
All vehicles are generously speccedand some features are a market seg-ment first. The Clio is sold with a 5-year/150,000km warranty and 3-year/450,000km service plan.
Standard features on all three vari-ants include: Four airbags, electricdoor mirrors, height adjustable driv-ers seat, air conditioning (optional onAuthentique), body-coloured doorhandles, side mirrors and bumpers,
LED daytime running lights, Cruisecontrol with speed limiter, Bluetoothconnectivity for audio streaming,hands-free telephon, USB connectiv-ity, onboard computer, Bass Reflexsound system, motorway touch in-dicators, Renault keycard and Hill

colour display is easy to operate andread.

The Clio 4 obtained a five starEuroNCAP safety rating so it comeswith a host of active and passive safety
features, including ABS with Emer-gency Brake Assist and ElectronicStability Control.
The interior feels classy withdifferent fabric upholstery choic-es for each model.

Professor Ai Lai, who led the team, reveals:Nanogenerators convert mechanical energy avail-able in the environment into electrical energy, activating safe low-voltage electrical currents onthe cars outer body surface.
These currents flow in precise, overlappingpatterns to disturb and dissolve micro-attachmentson the cars metalwork, such as dirt and dust.

3PIETERMARITZBURG 26 April 2013 New Model
Ford Kuga
Pounces onlocal marketBy Justin Stephenson
Ford first launched the Kuga to the localmarket five long years after it arrived onoverseas showroom floors. No surprise then that this fledging crossover may
have come across as a new-born kitten finding itsfeet in a market of modern, fighting-ready con-tenders.
Good thing then that the all-new 2013 Kuga hasarrived more timeously on our shores. But more sothat it has arrived sure-footed and armed with apride of options, ready to take on the best thesegment has to offer.
In fact the new Kuga comes with everything thatopens and shuts and manages to pull it off withoutlooking too flashy. Options on the Kuga's list nowinclude parallel parking assist that actively seeksout an open bay and completely controls themanoeuvring into the parking; lane guidance andlane assist which notify the driver when they driftover into the next lane and at times will steer thedriver back into their lane; and perhaps one of thebest options to be found on the Kuga is the opensesame option, allowing one to open the tail gate bysimply waving one's foot underneath the numberplate.
The Kuga can also be equipped with an all-wheel-drive system which offers drivers a littleextra traction when needed most. Given that Fordenvisioned the Kuga as a 'go anywhere' vehicle;AWD is a welcomed touch.
The engine line-up includes Ford's renownedEco Boost technology in the form of a 1.6-litrepetrol motor, available with 110kW or 132kW if
you have the AWD model. Alternately you can optfor the more efficient 2.0-litre turbo diesel.
Handling is responsive and provides constantreassurance that the Kuga is able to handle itselfboth on tar and gravel roads. It's a big upgradethanks to a platform developed in Europe for theFocus, as opposed to one built in the USA for atruck.
The power and torque generated by the 1.6EcoBoost motor was especially surprising as therelatively large Kuga tore across the terrain.
Styling wise the Kuga follows Ford's globaldesign cues, mimicking other offerings like the newFocus and Fiesta to offer dynamic lines and anaggressive front end. The Kuga demands attentionon the road as it easily stands amongst the traffic;perhaps, dare I say, like a cougar amongst deer.
The interior is spacious, while design elementsflow from the exterior to provide sharp lines on thedashboard and a refreshing layout. The Kuga isequipped with Sync, Ford's own media man-agement system, and provides easy connectivityfor cell phones and MP3 players.
Ford has clearly been busy with market research,as the price and trim levels prove hard to beat.Prospective customer's will be hard pressed to beatthe value offered by the entry level Kuga, while thehigh end Titanium comes standard with all the bellsand whistles along with a choice of engines.
The only question left to ask then is where willthe Kuga take you?
Pricing starts at R289,900 for the 1.6 EcoBoostFWD Ambiente and ends with the 2.0 TDCi AWDTitanium at R418,900.

School Scene 5PIETERMARITZBURG 26 April 2013 Road ReportGolf TDI
Perky but pricey
The new Golf comes with all the essentials but you will have to reach a little deeper into yourpocket for some extras like leather seats, park distance control and climate control. Our test
model was the 110kW Golf 2.0 TDI 110kW Highline.
By Gavin Foster
Two months ago we reported on the newVW Golf 7 and opined that the latestversion is the best Golf ever.At the launch we drove only the 1.4 TSI
Trendline with the six speed manual gearbox(R246,700) and the 1.4 TSI Comfortline with theseven-speed DSG transmission (R279,400).
A few weeks ago Volkswagen South Africacontinued our education by delivering a 110kWGolf 2.0 TDI 110kWHighline with the six-speed DSG transmis-sion.
This model, retail-ing at R334,800, cur-rently tops the rangebut that will changewhen the latest GTIarrives later this year. It's currently the onlyoil-burning Golf onoffer, but a more af-fordable 81kW ver-sion will join it be-fore year-end.
The Highline specification of the test carbrings with it sporty front seats, a 5,8 inchtouchscreen with Bluetooth and USB compat-ibility, 17" alloy wheels sporting low-profilerubber, firmer suspension, and a little more blingwith things like added chrome trim inside andoutside.
While the car comes with all the essentialsyou'll have to reach a little deeper into yourpocket for some extras that one would expect tobe standard in a car costing well overR300,000.
The leather seats option as fitted to the testvehicle cost an additional R7,000, park distance
control R3,000, a climate control system insteadof the standard aircon added R3,500.to the priceand the sunroof lightens your wallet by R8,800.At the price the absence of electronic seatadjustment is also surprising.
As it was, by the time the metallic paint, towbar, iPod with adaptor cable and Light Assistin the test car were accounted for the price hadescalated to a rather steep R363,600.
The two-litre turbodiesel engine of the Golffeels wide-awake,giving you a healthypush in the back ev-ery time you give it aprod, so there's noneed to really rake itwith the spurs.
VW claims a 0-100 km/h time of 8,6seconds and a topspeed of 212km/hwhich means that asimilarly pricedBMW 120d willleave you for dead at
the traffic lights with no prospect of catching upon top-end, if that's important to you.
The car is still lively and fun to drive though, and very few buyers would be worried by the factthat there are quicker rivals out there. The sixspeed dual-clutch transmission works very wellalthough I'd rather have a six-speed manual, butthat option is not available with the diesel Golf.
I have no doubt that the Golf 2.0 TDI 110kWwill sell well, but I suspect that for many buyersthe 81kW Comfortline version with a five-speedmanual transmission that will arrive later thisyear at R282,300 will be a better option. It'll alsohave a softer ride and wheels and tyres moreappropriate for our pothole plagued roads.

Golden Horse Casino has responded with a donation of R6 900 to help 26 year old local fi refi ghter, Kiran Singh, walk again.
The casino is urging the community to join hands and help Singh achieve his ambition to work again as a fi refi ghter a job he loves - with the Pietermaritzburg Fire and Rescue Emergency Services.
The casinos Maureen Kivits said of Singh This is a man who has given so selfl essly during his career. He shouldnt have to have to fi ght to have the money he needs to get his life back. We hope the people in our community will help him achieve his goal to walk again and return to work.
Singh, who was an active fi refi ghter, novice bodybuilder, and passionate about leading a healthy life and saving people, was knocked off his motor bike in a hit and run, and left for dead on the side of the highway in October last year.
He lost his lower left leg on impact dur-ing the accident and later had to undergo another major operation which resulted in his becoming an above the knee amputee.
Singh says: I am slowly beginning to accept that I will never get my leg back but with prosthetics technology as advanced as it is, I will be able to lead a normal life again. Nothing is impossible with the right set of tools and a positive mindset.
He has made rapid recovery during the past four months and is now ready for his prosthetic leg.
I am positive about my future and I want to be the fi rst fi refi ghter in South Africa with a prosthetic leg to be on active duty. I enjoyed rescue work and I am pas-
sionate about helping the community. With the correct prosthetic I can achieve this, says Singh.
Unfortunately, his medical aid will not pay the full cost of the prosthetics and he is now trying to raise the funds himself. To this end he has launched his Second Chance at Life appeal and a trust account has been opened.

Mandy Steel and Col-leen Villiger from Howick -based Village Talk travelled to Dur-ban last Wednesday to hand over a cheque for R34 000 to East Coast Radios KZN Rhino Watch.
This amount was raised by the Howick community last year when Village Talk launched their Save the Rhino Fund. Special T-shirts were sold and many of these found their way to friends and relatives living in Australia, America and Brit-ain as well as many other parts of South Africa. The commu-nity also became involved in their own fund-raising efforts to raise money to help in the fi ght against rhino poaching.
We are very proud of our community and everyone who gave so generously. The amount of R34 000 was raised mainly through small donations, many given by those who do not have much money to spare. On behalf of our rhino thank you, said editor of Village Talk, Rosemary Antonik.

After trying a lot of healers without success a friend of mine directed to consult his long time Spiritual healer JOY who operates in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg of which I did, I booked an appointment over the phone and met with him in his Prayer room, he read out my fortune and whatever he said was 100% correct. He told me my problem before I could tell him and I was shocked!!! He sold me one Super Magic Ring. I went with it and played lotto tickets, I was surprised when my numbers came back matching, I won in lotto a lot of money, after that my friend and I proceeded to the Sibaya Casino where we won a lot of jackpots. Now I am a happy mother, I bought a new home, bought my furniture and took my children back to good varsities. Thanks JOY for
the best work you did for me.
