Swachch Bharath Abhiyan (Clean India Drive)
1. Bon Secours College for Women, Thanjavur
The NSS Volunteers of Bon Secours College for Women, Thanjavur
actively participated in cleaning the public places of Hope area under
“Swachch Bharath Abhiyan” on 11.01.2017. Around 50 female volunteers
participated in the cleaning activities.

2. Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, Trichy
The NSS units of Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, Trichy organised a
cleanliness campaign in January 2017. Around 50 NSS Volunteers participated in the campaign to clean the roadside of the Trichy-Thanjavur highway and the bus stop near Kattur, Trichy dt.
3. Mass College of Arts & Science, Kumbakonam
The NSS units of Mass College of Arts & Science, Kumbakonam
conducted a cleaning camp in the Natham village of the Kovilachery Panchayat on 29.01.2017 as part of the Clean India Drive. The NSS Volunteers cleaned the public places of the village including the surrounding
of the Hand pump and drainage.

4. Workshop on Solid Waste Management by NSS Cell, BDU
The NSS Cell of Bharathidasan University organised a one day
Workshop on “Solid Waste Management” for the NSS Volunteers as part of
Swachh Bharat Mission on 21.02.2017 in the University Campus. The Vice-
Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, Dr. V.M. Muthukumar was the
chief guest for the inauguration programme.
Dr. L. Uma, Syndicate Member and Director of National Facility for
Marine Cyanobacteria (NFMC), Bharathidasan University offered
felicitations. Dr. A. Lakshmi Prabha, NSS Programme Coordinator of
Bharathidasan University proposed the Vote of Thanks. Earlier, NSS
Programme Officer of Bharathidasan University (Unit I), Mr. P. Masilamani
welcomed the gathering.
During the technical session, Dr. P. Neelanarayanan, Associate
Professor and Founder Director of Centre for Eco-friendly Agro Technology
(CEAT), Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti explained about “Waste
Management techniques” with the help of powerpoint presentation. Dr. N.D.
Srinithi Vihahshini, Assistant Professor of Environmental Management
spoke about “Wealth from Waste”. Later live demonstration of waste
management was given by and Dr. M. Vasanthy’s team, Assistant Professor
of Environmental Biotechnology, Bharathidasan University.
Around 200 NSS Volunteers, 20 NSS Programme Officers and
Professors of Bharathidasan University participated in the programme.

5. Cleaning of Cauvery River at Kumbakonam
The NSS units of Govt. Arts College, Kumbakonam conducted a cleaning camp of Cauvery River on 04.03.2017 as part of their Special Camp. The Principal of the College inaugurated the camp. The NSS
Volunteers under the guidance of the NSS Programme Officer, Dr. J. Jayavanishri cleaned the river and its banks by removing the Plastic, waste articles, empty sachets, etc. The cleaning covered around 3 kms from
Palakkarai to Karuppur.

On 05.03.2017 the NSS Volunteers cleaned the teppakkulam (holy
pool) of Kumbeswarar temple. Inspector of Police, Mr. Periyasamy and
Executive Officer of the temple, Ms. Kavitha appreciated the volunteers for
their effort.

6. Cauvery River Cleaning at Tiruvaiyaru
The NSS unit-III of K.N. Govt. Arts College for Women, Thanjavur
cleaned the Cauvery River on 18.02.2017 at Thiruvaiyaru under the
guidance of NSS Programme Officer, Dr. A. Meenakshi. This cleaning
campaign was organised by Festival of Sacred Music, Tiruvaiyaru. Around
90 NSS Volunteers cleaned the river for around 5 km distance. Food and
Refreshments were sponsored by HDFC Bank and Lakshmi Vilas Bank.

7. Thamaraikulam Cleaning by Kalaimahal College
The NSS units of Kalaimahal College of Arts & Science, Sembanarkoil,
Nagapattinam district conducted a cleaning camp at Thamaraikulam
situated at Agraharam village near Arupathi. About 50 NSS Volunteers
under the guidance of NSS Programme Officer, Mr. R. Sathish Kumar
removed the unwanted plants, plastic carry bags, waste articles, etc. in the
pond.

8. SMK College of Arts and Science for Women, Thuraiyur
SMK College of Arts and Science for Women, Thuraiyur, Trichy dt
conducted a campus cleaning programme on 10.03.2017. All the NSS
Volunteers involved in cleaning the college premises on the day under the
guidance of the NSS Programme Officer, Ms. Ilavarasi.

Training and Awareness Programmes on Cashless Transactions
1. Bharathidasan University Constituent College, Perambalur
The NSS units of Bharathidasan University Constituent College,
Perambalur in association with the State Bank of India organised an one
day training camp on Cashless Transactions on 05.01.2017 for the college
students. The Principal of the College, Dr. N. Rajaraman presided over the
programme. Mr. Vajjiravel, Manager, State Bank of India, Perambalur town
branch explained the various modes available for the cashless transactions
such as Net Banking, Mobile Banking, Debit Card, etc. Mr. Piraichandran
explained the simple methods of cashless transactions using the basic
mobile phones. An interactive session was organised to clarify all the
doubts raised by the students and staff members of the college. The NSS

2. Idaya College for Women, Kumbakonam
The NSS Volunteers of Idaya College for Women, Kumbakonam made
an awareness campaign on cashless transactions for the public in view of
the National Youth Day celebrations. The NSS Volunteers visited the public

3. Karur Velalar College of Arts & Science for Women, Karur
The NSS Units of Karur Velalar College of Arts & Science for Women,
Karur organised a training programme on Cashless Transactions for the
Students of the college in association with the State Bank of India. Mr.
Srinivasan, Branch Manager of State Bank of India, Karur Branch explained
about the cashless transactions to the students and staff members of the
college. All the 600 students including NSS Volunteers participated in the
programme.
4. Annai Women’s College, Karur
The NSS unit of Annai Women’s College, Karur along with CSC,
Arachalur conducted an awareness programme on “Cashless Transactions”
on 30th December 2016 in the College campus. Nss Volunteer, B. Ragini,
delivered the welcome address. Dr. I. Sarumathi, Principal, Annai Women’s
College, Karur delivered the presidential address. The Chief Guest, Mr. M.
Srinivasan, Branch Manager, State Bank India, Karur delivered his special
address about the title “Go Cashless, Go Digital”. He also gave a demo to the
gathering. During this programme, nearly 200 bank Accounts were opened
in State Bank of India, Karur branch for non-account holders including
students and faculty members. NSS Volunteer, T. Dharshini, proposed the

5. Cauvery College for Women, Trichy
The NSS units of Cauvery College for Women, Trichy organised a
Poster Making Competition based on digital economy and Demonetization on
04.01.2017. 40 students participated in order to give and have awareness
on digital economy. The theme for this Poster Making was to enlarge the
minds of the onlookers in giving wide information of using money payments
in digital format by using Online Payments. The NSS Programme Officers
Dr. M. Neela, Mrs. A. Sahaya Jenitha and Dr. Rita Shanthakumar briefed
the students to be more digitalized in this technology world and to spread
the message especially in the rural areas.

6. Jairams Arts & Science College, Karur
Jairams Arts & Science College, Karur organised an awareness
programme on Cashless Transaction on 10.02.2017 for the college students.
Mr. Kaviarasan, Deputy Manager, State Bank of India, Thanthonimalai
branch explained the modes of cashless transactions with the help of
powerpoint presentation. Around 300 students participated and benefitted
through the programme.
Visit to Special School
Around 80 NSS volunteers of Aiman College of Arts and Science for
Women, Trichy Visited “Intact Special School” on 4th January 2017. The
mentally challenged children are the “Angels of God”. Those innocent
children are neglected by our society. This has to be changed, if they are
given best care by trained persons, they are capable to excel better than
others. The students interacted with the children and they responded in
their own way. It was an eye opening experience for students.

Visit to Old Aged Home
The NSS Volunteers of Cauvery College for Women, Trichy along with
NSS Programme Officers visited Krishna Old Age Home located at
Tiruvellarai near Manachanallur. The Principal of the College Dr. V. Sujatha
urged the NSS Volunteers to be more humane and considerate to the elderly
folks residing at home and neighbourhood. The elderly folk were given
snacks by the NSS volunteers. 50 inmates of the HOME were much
comforted and felt at ease while sharing their problems meet out at home by
their kith and kin. Students shared their thoughts and feelings and
promised to help them in future. They also learnt the values of being
compassionate and to listen to their woes and find a solution to help them.
Around 40 NSS Volunteers and NSS Programme Officers Mrs. A. Sahaya
Jenitha, Dr. M. Neela and Dr. Rita Shanthakumar interacted with the
elderly folk by comforting their problems.

2. Aiman College of Arts and Science for Women, Trichy
The NSS Units of AIMAN College of Arts & Science for Women, Trichy
organised a Special Lecture on the topic “DISATER MANAGEMENT” on 18th
January 2017. Mrs. A. Vidhya, M.B.A., M.Phil., NSS Programme Officer
delivered the welcome address. Mr. G. Arumugam, Training Officer, South
Range, Tamil Nadu, National Disaster Management Authority (Govt of India)
New Delhi, was the Chief guest of the day. He spoke on how well one could
protect oneself from the disaster like flood, fire, earth quick, accident, etc.
Each and every minute of life Management is uncertain. We must all be
prepared for uncertainties and disasters. The trainer demonstrated that all
of us can ensure the safety for us and people around us at the time of
disaster. He covered first aid for injury, rescuing people during flood, earth
quake, etc.
Postal Life Insurance Awareness Programme
The NSS unit of S.M.K. College of Arts & Science for Women, Trichy
conducted an awareness programme on Postal Life Insurance on
01.02.2017. All the NSS Volunteers, Principal of the College, NSS
Programme Officer, Administrative Officer participated in the programme.

The NSS Cell of Bharathidasan University organised the NSS
Programme Officers meeting on 13.02.2017 in the University campus. Mr.
P. Masilamani, NSS Programme Officer (Unit I) welcomed the gathering.
Shri. C. Samuel Chelliah, Regional Director of NSS, Chennai was the chief
guest. He explained the NSS activities, Awards, importance of NSS work

diary, NSS Certificate, etc. Doubts raised by the Programme Officers were
clarified by the Regional Director and the Programme Coordinator during the
interactive session. NSS Programme Coordinator of Bharathidasan
University, Dr. A. Lakshmi Prabha proposed the Vote of Thanks. Several
Programme Officers praised that the programme was very useful for them.
The Programme Officers requested that an Identity Card may be issued by
the University’s NSS Cell for the Programme Officers and the Programme
Coordinator also agreed to issue the Identity card. Around 200 NSS
Volunteers from various colleges across the 8 districts under the university’s
jurisdiction participated in the programme.

BDU NSS Advisory Committee Meeting
The University level NSS Advisory Committee Meeting of
Bharathidasan Unviersity was held on 14.02.2017 in the University’s
Syndicate Hall. Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University,
Dr. V.M. Muthukumar chaired the meeting in the presence of Registrar, Dr.
R. Babu Rajendran, Regional Director of NSS, Chennai, Shri. C. Samuel
Chelliah, NSS Programme Coordinator, Dr. A. Lakshmi Prabha and other
members of the Advisory Committee. Several resolutions were passed
during the meeting.
Skill Development Programme
The NSS unit of SMK College of Arts and Science for Women,
Thuraiyur, Trichy dt conducted a skills development programme related to
technology development for the students on 15.02.2017. All the NSS
Volunteers had participated and benefitted from the programme. The
Chairman, Administrative Officer, Principal, NSS Programme Officer K.
Ilavarasi and all the Professors were present on the occasion.
Tuberculosis Awareness Programme
The SMK College of Arts and Science for Women, Thuraiyur, Trichy dt
conducted an awareness programme on Prevention of diseases and its
awareness on 23.02.2017 in the college campus. The awareness on
preventing tuberculosis disease was given to the college students.

Awareness Campaign on Removing of Prosopis Juliflora
The NSS unit of BDU Model College, Vedaranyam conducted an
awareness campaign on 23.02.2017 for the removal of Prosopis Juliflora.
The District Collector of Nagapattinam inaugurated the campaign by
explaining the ill effects of Prosopis Juliflora. The NSS Volunteers
distributed pamphlets to the public near the Bus Stand and other places
nearby where the people gathered. 50 NSS Volunteers and Dr. T. Raja, NSS
Programme Officer participated in the campaign.

Women’s Day Celebrations
The NSS units of Sri Saradha College for Women, Perambalur
celebrated the International Women’s Day on 08.03.2017 in the college
campus. Dr. M. Sivasubramaniam, Chairman, Sri Ramakrishna Group of
Institutions presided over the programme while Mrs. A. Nazeema Banu,
Principal District Judge, Perambalur was the chief guest. Dr. S. Kannagi,
Principal of the college welcomed the gathering, while Ms. Puvana, NSS
Programme Officer proposed the Vote of Thanks.

Eye and General Health Awareness Camp
Bharathidasan University, as a part of UGC-XII Plan extension
activity, conducted an Eye and General Health Awareness Camp at
Bharathidasan Constituent Arts and Science College, Navalur Kuttapattu,
Srirangam Taluk for the surrounding six villages namely Vannankoil,
Thayanur, Navalur Kuttapattu, Baganur, Chatrapatti and Ariyavur on
14.03.2017. Wide publicity was ensured via big banners, posters displayed
at various places in the surrounding villages. Handbills and pamphlets were
also distributed door to door.
The camp was inaugurated by the Honourable Vice-Chancellor of
Bharathidasan University, Dr. V.M. Muthukumar. He released a booklet on
Eye and Health awareness and delivered the presidential address. During
his address he insisted that health is as important as education,
maintaining good health is the need of the hour as Health is wealth. Dr. D.
Parimala Devi, M.D, D.G.O., Former Dean, Pudukottai Govt. Hospital, in her
special address, insisted the importance of morning breakfast. She also
pointed out that many girls are identified as anaemic, therefore, they should
take more iron borne foods. Dr. S. Iyyampillai, Principal of the college,
during his address said that our country is economically more developed
when compared to the development on health.
Ophthalmologist, Dr. Bhavani and team from Joseph Eye Hospital,
Tiruchirappalli checked for refractive errors and eye diseases for all the
participants. Dr. D. Parimala Devi, M.D., D.G.O., Professor and Special
Officer, Govt. Hospital, Pudukkottai and Dr. V. Subash, Gandhi, M.B.B.S.,

M.A. (Public Health) and their team checked the village people for their
general health. The participants were tested for general health parameters
namely Height, Weight, Random Blood Sugar, Blood Grouping, Blood
Pressure, Haemoglobin, etc.
Dr. M.V. Alli, Associate Professor, Department of Nutrition and
Dietics, Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College, Trichy emphasised the need of
proper diet and how to maintain good health through diet alone.
Around 350 people from the surrounding villages participated and
were benefitted by the camp. All the participants were provided free
transportation. Dr. A. Lakshmi Prabha, NSS Programme Coordinator,
Bharathidasan University thanked the Ophthalmologists, Doctors and all
the participants for making the camp a grand success. Earlier, Dr. D.
Prabaharan, Professor, Department of Marine Biotechnology, Bharathidasan
University welcomed the gathering.

Economic Crime Awareness Rally
The NSS units of Govt. Arts College, Karur conducted an Economic
Crime Awareness Rally in association with the Economic Crime branch of
Karur Police on 14.03.2017. Mr. Rajendran, Superintendent of Police, Karur
district flagged of the rally in the college premises. The rally went through
Thanthonimalai and returned to the college, in which around 200 NSS
Volunteers participated in the rally.

NSS NYLP Awards Presentation Ceremony
The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India has instituted
Special Awards for NSS Units under National Young Leaders Programme
(NYLP) wherein the NSS Volunteers are encouraged to do additional 100 hrs
excluding 120 hrs of Regular Activities in Shramdhan activities (Voluntary
Manual Labour). The objective of NYLP is to channelize the Youth energy
towards Nation building activities. These voluntary activities will indeed
help NSS Volunteers to develop their personality and leadership qualities
and promote the spirit of dignity of labour.
The Ministry has sanctioned special funds for presenting cash prizes
for the selected NSS units under NYLP. A committee was constituted for
selecting the best NSS units comprising of the Registrar, NSS Programme
Coordinator, Nodal Officer of Ragging Prevention Committee and a Social
Worker.
The NSS NYLP Award presentation ceremony for the year 2015-16 was
held on 05.04.2017 in the University campus. The Vice-Chancellor of
Bharathidasan University, Dr. V.M. Muthukumar was the chief guest for the
programme. During his presidential address he appreciated the NSS
Programme Officers and NSS Volunteers for their social welfare activities
and he encouraged them to receive more and more awards and honours for
their social service.
The NSS Regional Director of the Chennai Region, under the Ministry
of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India, Shri. C. Samuel Chelliah offered
felicitations.

Officer of the University, Dr. P. Natarajamurthy welcomed the gathering.
Professors and Students from various departments of the University, NSS
