Many people love to explore. They like to go to new places. Long
ago, people went to new lands. Some were looking for gold. Others
wanted lands to rule. Others looked for places to start a new
life.
Five hundred years ago, European explorers went across the ocean.
They explored North and South America. They called these places the
New World.
Some explorers looked for gold in the New World. This Native
American object was made of gold.

In 1492, the king and queen of Spain talked to Christopher
Columbus. They asked him to find a way to India and China. They
also wanted him to find gold. Columbus did not get there. He landed
in the New World. He did not find much gold there.
Other explorers went to the New World. Most of them were from
Spain. They fought with the Native Americans. They took over the
Native Americans’ land.
Columbus looked for a way to India and China. Instead, he found the
New World.

The Inca and the Aztecs were Native American groups. They lived in
the New World. They made things from gold. They used it for their
art. They used it to make jewelry. The Spanish wanted their
gold.
The Spanish heard stories. They heard about the Seven Cities of
Cíbola (SEE boh lah). These cities were also called the Seven
Cities of Gold.

The Spanish took land from the Aztecs and other people. They called
the land New Spain. This area is now Mexico. The Spanish wanted to
look for Cíbola north of New Spain.
In 1539, they sent a monk to look for Cíbola. A monk is a religious
man. His name was Marcos de Niza. Marcos and some explorers went to
find Cíbola.
This old map shows where the Spanish looked for the cities of
gold.

Marcos’s group went north for many days. The land was hot and dry.
They crossed deserts. They crossed mountains. At last, they reached
what is now Arizona.
Marcos thought he was close to Cíbola. He sent his explorers ahead.
After four days, they sent a message. They found something.
Marcos de Niza traveled across hot, dry deserts.

The Spanish explorers looked for Cíbola. They thought the cities of
gold were in Arizona and New Mexico. Today we know there was no
Cíbola. There were no cities of gold.

found a city. The Native Americans there fought them. The explorers
were afraid to go back.

Marcos went back to New Spain. He lied. He said he found a big city
filled with gold. People believed him. They thought he found one of
the Seven Cities.
The Spanish sent a small army. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was
the leader. He wanted to find gold.
Coronado’s group started out in 1540. He had more than 300 soldiers
and 800 people. They carried supplies. The group also brought
animals. They used the animals for food.

The trip was hard for Coronado’s group. At last, he thought he
found Cíbola. Instead, he found a small Native American group. They
were the Zunis. The Zunis were not happy to see Coronado. They were
ready to fight.
The Zunis lost the fight. Coronado did not find any gold there. So
Coronado kept looking. He sent explorers to the east. They did not
see golden cities.

Coronado sent explorers to the west too. They found the Grand
Canyon. They still did not find any gold.
In 1542, Coronado went back to New Spain. He had gone far away. He
had seen new lands. But he never found the Seven Cities of
Cíbola.

People in New Spain were angry. Marcos had lied to them. He did not
find Cíbola.
Today, people still tell stories about the cities of gold!
Did You Know? Gold
People first found gold about 6,000 years ago. Since then, people
have used gold for many things. Long ago, people made gold art,
cups, and plates. They also made jewelry. Gold was put on
buildings. It was also used to make money.
People still use gold today. They use it for jewelry and coins.
Gold is worth a lot of money.
