Some cultural generalizations to question:
You must pick ONE career, ONE area of specialization.“Perennial students” are lazy or immature, won’t “buckle down”, won’t “do the hard stuff” required of more serious people. You should study something that you can put to use.
I can never stick to anything.I know I should focus on one thing, but which one?I lose interest in things I thought would interest me forever.I keep going off on another tangent.I get bored as soon as I know how to do something.I can’t stand to do anything twice.I keep changing my mind about what I want to do and end up doing nothing.I work at low-paying jobs because there’s nothing I’m willing to commit to.I won’t choose a career path because it might be the wrong one.I pull away from what I’m doing because I’m afraid I’ll miss something better.I’m too busy, but when I do find time I can’t remember what I wanted to do.
Are you a “Scanner”?
What is a “Scanner”?Love lifeLove new experiencesAre interesting peopleAre intensely interestedHave difficulty choosingLearn faster than othersMust explore many thingsCan’t have fewer interestsDon’t want fewer interestsAre most talented at learningHave low tolerance for boredomHave intense curiosity about numerous unrelated subjects

Some thoughts to ponderYou don’t always have to use things you loveIt’s not always so practical to be practicalDelicious dilettantism pays its way by making you remember every day that life is amazing and there is no end to the wonder of itAristotle, Goethe, Leonardo Da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, and others had very diverse interests and each pursued many. These people did not:
Feel guilty leaving projects unfinished Feel obliged to choose just one subject Settle on one career Appear defensive or apologetic about it
