RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM
Why, oh why? Or else we’ll die!
Our Respiratory System provides our body with __________
for the purpose of ____________________. The energy (or
______) produced during respiration is used for
____________ processes and to maintain ____________
(dynamic equilibrium). In addition, this system allows us to
expel _________________.
Oxygen
Aerobic Respiration
ATP
Metabolic Homeostasis
Carbon Dioxide
How do other organisms Respire?
Stomates: Openings on the underside of leaves lets
plants exchanges
gases.
Skin: Worms exchange gases
through their moist skin. **If worms dry out
they can’t respire!**
Fish: Use gills to absorb oxygen from the water and
release carbon dioxide.
Plant RespirationPlant Respiration• Lenticles are small holes in woody stems of plants that allow for gas exchange.
• 3 Places Plants Exchange Gases:
• Roots
• Stomates
• Lenticles

Alveoli
Lungs contain bronchioles and alveoli.
bronchiole1.
2. alveoli
3. capillary
• Alveoli are thin, one cell layer thick pockets surrounded by tiny blood vessels (called capilaries).
• Here oxygen diffuses
into the blood.
• Also carbon dioxide diffuses into the alveoli to be exhaled!

So……why do we breathe? And how?
We mostly breathe to rid ourselves of CO2
Inhale: ribs up and out, diaphragm down.
Exhale: ribs down, diaphragm up.
Respiratory Disorders:Respiratory Disorders:AllergiesAllergies
Allergies are caused by benign (non-harmful) substances causing a histamine response in the body.
Histamines cause:
sneezing runny nose watery eyes
Respiratory Disorders: ASTHMA
Causes of asthma:-Genetic-Exercise-Air contaminates (smog, pollen, cigarettes, etc)
What happens?-Muscles around the bronchioles tightens and won’t relax-Airways swell-Mucus is produced
This means there is less space in the airway and it becomes difficult to get enough oxygen in.
Respiratory Disorders: BRONCHITIS
Infection and inflammation caused by: virus, bacteria,
asthma, smoking

Smoking: The Self Inflicted Smoking: The Self Inflicted Respiratory Nightmare!Respiratory Nightmare!
Smoking causes:
Bad hair!
Bad stink!Bad teeth!
Bad skin!
ADDICTION!!
That was then…This is now!
Do you know this guy?Do you know this guy?
Smoking causes: EMPHYSEMA
Alveoli are overstretched and lose their elasticity. The walls between alveoli also break
down, leaving less surface area.
It feels like you can’t get enough
air.
Smoking causes
Cancer
laryngectomy
