The Code of Conduct and its implementation intothe REWE Touristic Group
The six criteria of the Code of Conduct
1. To establish an ethical policy regarding commercial sexual
exploitation of children.
2. To train the personnel in the country of origin and travel
destinations.
3. To introduce a clause in contracts with suppliers, stating a
common repudiation of commercial sexual exploitation of
children.
4. To provide information to travellers by means of catalogues,
brochures, in-flight films, ticket-slips, home pages, etc.
5. To provide information to local "key persons" at the
destinations.
6. To report annually.

2. To train the personnel in the country of origin
and travel destinations
• Active participation in the DRV destination trainings
(e.g. Dominican Republic) in cooperation with the GTZ and
the local authorities
• Organizer and host of the “ECPAT Train-the-trainer” inhouse
seminars to qualify employees in the companies‟
headquarters Cologne and Frankfurt
• Supply training for the REWE Touristic apprentices
• Provision of information for employees via Intranet
• Training of destination managers and tourguides
• Presentation of the topic on trade fairs and on various
companies‟ events

3. To introduce a clause in contracts with
suppliers, stating a common repudiation of
commercial sexual exploitation of children
Clause in all hotel contracts of the REWE Touristic Group:
“The tour operator shall be entitled to terminate the
agreement with the hotel manager if it becomes known to
the operator that the hotel manager supports or tolerates
criminal actions such as sexual exploitation of children.”

4. To provide information to travellers by means of
catalogues, brochures, in-flight films, ticket-
slips, home pages, etc.
• Communication of commitment in catalogues: under “Important
information” in the general price section
• Information on the company‟s website: own section under
“Environment and social matters”
• Distribution of the flyer “Kleine Seelen, Große Gefahr” (small
souls, great danger) through inclusion in the information folders
in the hotels
• Distribution of the flyer during the welcome cocktails by tour
guides
• Discussion of the topic in guest brochures to clarify the position
of the REWE Touristic Group in this topic

5. To provide information to local "key persons" at

• Constant meetings and training of the chief tour guides
in the different destinations
• Provision of a “distance learning course” for tour operator
employees

Idea
• Hotels are significant locations, where child
abuse may happen
• All members of the staff can get involved in
incidents in various ways
• A clear company policy is of crucial importance
• All staff members need to be aware of the
companies policy and need to know exactly how
to react

Stepped approach
1. „Train the trainer“ –
full day seminar for all
employees on management level,
especially for those in charge of staff
2. Production and distribution of materials
to enable the managers to train their staff
on the issue of child protection
3. Provide all staff with written materials on the company„s
policy and the instructions on how to act in different
situations (in their local language)
