Heart since the early 90’s. She will be missed.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS EVERY FRIDAY DURING LENT AT 7pm IN THE CHURCH
Jesus’ parables are so drawn from experiences in life that the fictional characters in them seem to be real people. Perhaps most realistic is the prodigal son. His story illustrates for us the meaning of the sacrament of penance. Lent is a particularly appropriate season to celebrate the sacrament of penance. This Sunday we see in Luke’s Gospel how happy the father was when his prodigal son returned home. The fact that the father insisted on an elaborate banquet to celebrate the return of his lost child should
encourage us to prepare for the sacrament of penance with confidence in God’s mercy. God our Father eagerly wishes to celebrate our repentance. The young son’s repentance is our model. After having squandered his inheritance, he came to his senses . He abandoned his dissolute way of living and resolved to return to his father. He prepared to confess his sins and to make an act of contrition. Before asking to be forgiven, he resolved to change his life.
In an earlier era of the Church people confessed their sins to the Bishop on Ash Wednesday. Sackcloth was given them to wear and ashes were sprinkled on their heads. The Bishop assigned a penance which was to be performed during the entire season of lent. On Holy Thursday morning they would receive absolution from the Bishop and that evening participated in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Today we have inverted the order of the sacrament. We confess our sins, receive absolution, and then only later do we perform our penance. From the earlier practice of the Church we can learn an important lesson, that we should not wait until we go to confession and receive an official penance from the priest. We ought to practice penance long before we approach the priest. In other words, we should be working the entire season of Lent to change our lives. If we enter into the spirit of repentance and participate properly in the sacrament of penance, at the end of Lent we will hear our Father say; “Let us eat and celebrate for my children have come back to Me.”
Many thanks to Meg Honrath who has served our parish the last few years as
a welcoming presence at the kiosk during the afternoon from 1pm-5pm.
Meg’s last day was Friday, March 29. We are seeking to fill this position of
part-time church monitor.
If you are interested, please contact Dara West in the church office at
478-923-0124. Thank you!
“No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.” ~Joshua 5:12 Over the forty years that the Israelites journeyed through the desert, God provided them with manna to eat. As soon as they were able to enjoy the fruits of the Promised Land the manna ceased. Likewise, God’s blessings to us may change over the years but it is important to trust that God will always provide us with all that we need.
