Saint Basil's Cathedral

A Presentation By Doug & Hunter!!1!

Design Process

The idea for the design came from the genius Postnik Yakovlev. The inspiration for the design is based on a structure with nine separate chapels with different colored dome tops. The cathedrals each represent a victory over the tartar Mongols in the city of Kazan. The basement and ground are perfectly aligned. This indicates use of professional drawing and drafting.

Construction Process• Built from 1555-1561 • Foundations were built of white

stone (typical of Moscow)• A wooden frame runs the church's

entire height (Inside the stone wals.)

• Brick was a new medium, so people really wanted to use it.

• Three dimensional - Architechture was the only decoration.

• Been restored several times. The last round of restoration ended in September 2008.

RequirementsBrick needed to be used!It was a new technology, and, as such, its flexibilityexcited the builders. (Even when the design required a stone wall, they decorated the wall with painted-over brick patterns. Not very many requirements - commissioned by Ivan IV of Russia, so a seemingly limitless budget, and resources were at the builder's disposal. Following the construction, legend says that Ivan blinded the architecht, so he would never build another structure quite as beautiful.

Impact on Society

Napoleon Bonaparte was very impressed by the cathedral and attmepted to take it to Paris with him, but he lacked the technology to complete the move - So he ordered his troops to blow it up! They lit the fuses on their cannons and were ready to fire - but a sudden rain shower extinguished the fuses. Since then it has really becomean icon for Russian culture - asa structure that much of Russiaidentifies with.

Culture• Bult to celebrate Ivan IV's

victory against the mongols • When viewed from the sky,

the cathedral's eight domes form an eight-point star, which holds very important religious significance in Russia.

 • The eight chapels surround

the all-important ninth chapel.
