Apparel Design and Merchandising News
Runway 2015: Transcend. On April 30th at the San Francisco Design Cen-ter, our Apparel Design and Merchan-dising students took over the Runway and along with the Fashion Network Association produced the 21st annual student fashion show. Over 40 looks
and 25 lines represented students’ individual statements on culture and society. Clothing donated by the Universi-ty Bookstore was again reconstructed and up-cycled into new designs making a statement on the problem of waste and re-use. ADM 569 visual merchandising students collaborated with students in the Broadcast Electronic and Communication Arts Department (BECA) to enable the creation of video films about the creation of the production and the actual designs. Go to the Fashion Network Association website: https://fnasf.wordpress.com/ for information on the show and other info about this student/alumni group. Watch the video of three ADM students’ experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yOjmS03XWs Students teach inmates sewing skills. Five of the graduate students in Dr. Ulasewicz’s CFS/MGMT 863 class, and lecturer Gail Baugh, participated in a six-week program at the San Francisco County Jail teaching inmates sewing skills. “When they leave, the inmates come away with sewing skills, handmade tote bags and, the SF State group hopes, interest in a new career path” as stated on a SF State News story. Interior Design News
The Advanced Interior Design Solutions class held their annual exhibit, Inspired Design from April 27-May 1 at the S.F.Design Center Galleria. This year’s theme was inspired by the crocheted wearable art designs of Dr. Kenneth Fehr-man, Professor Emeritus, Interior Design. The exhibit in-cluded student designed and hand-built furniture prototypes which reflected his work. The exhibit, under the guidance of Dr. Gus Vouchilas, also included student design and con-
struction of the display units, floral arrangements, as well as the design of graphics and invitations. This year’s re-ception included a special acknowledgment to Dr. Ken Fehrman and Cherie Fehrman for their support of the Interior Design Program at SFSU and the development of the Fehrman/Spinney Interior Design Scholarship. Special thanks to the San Francisco Design Center for their continued sponsorship of the ID program at SFSU and for providing our students with the oppor-tunity to showcase their work at the Center. Thanks also to our vendors and donors, Pop & Tar Orchids and Decorative Materials, for their generous donations of floral sculp-tures. The ASID@SFSU Chapter helped organize and host the California North Chap-ter sponsored Interior Design Student Graduation celebration. The event was held on May 7th at The Shade Store in San Francisco. Kudos to all of the ASID@SFSU board members for making this a terrific celebration of student success. Thanks so much to our hosts for opening their doors and welcoming us and thanks to the ASID members who helped us celebrate. ID 240 Exhibit: See Sherrill Halbe’s ID 240 class work displayed in BH 334 starting May 14: Nature in Masterpieces, which includes paper mosaics of nature designs inspired by the de Young Museums latest show From Botticelli to Braque: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland.

Storybooks Created for Underserved Children. Ivana Markova’s FCS 312 stu-dents created storybooks for children at the Compass Children’s Center, an award-winning early childhood education center in the S.F. Tenderloin. Natasha Yim, Bay Area children’s book author, worked with students on culturally and linguisti-cally sensitive writing. Students developed both the stories and illustrations. The books were presented to the children on April 29. See the story at http://goldengatexpress.org/2015/04/28/francesca-storybook-compass/
CFS/D Senior Showcase
Seniors in CFS 600 Professional Development, taught by Dr. Ulasewicz, Dr. Vouchilas, and Dr. Kelly Reddy-Best, and DFM 451 taught by Sarah Josef displayed their work in Apparel Design & Merchandising, Dietetics, Family & Consumer Sciences, and Interior Design at the CFS/D Senior Showcase. The Spring event took place May 11-13 in BH 334/336. The promotional poster was cre-ated by Haley Cruz. Congratulations to the best in show re-cipients.
We celebrated Sarah Josef’s retirement on May 7 in the Vista Room. What a crowd of stu-dents, colleagues, and other well-wishers. After 20 years of exceptional teaching, leader-ship and mentoring students at San Francisco State University she is off to sunny Hawaii. The CFS/D Department has started a scholarship in Sarah’s honor. Many donations were collected at the event. If others want to donate to the Sarah Josef dietetics scholarship please send donations to Kelly Vuong, CFS/D Department, San Francisco State Universi-ty, 1600 Holloway Ave, SF, CA 94132 or to Development Office (same address). We will all miss Sarah’s sincere dedication to the CFS/D Department and students. Most im-portantly we will miss her wonderful personality and positive spirit.
