PROFILE

Adil Kuzhi Kandathil •Master of Aeronautical Engineering from University of Brighton •Member of Institutional of Mechanical Engineer & Member of UK Heat Transfer Society •Working in the Renewable Energy industry for the past 5 years •Worked as Heat Recovery Engineer installing waste heat recovery system using ORC generators & steams screw expander. •Presently working with Larkfleet Ltd, UK doing projects on Energy from waste, district heating, gas engine plant installation and solar steam energy.

John Squire • Career: Mining and Process Engineer • Worked extensively on mineral mining projects overseas particularly in Norway, Holland and Brazil • Owner of two road stone quarries and other mining assets in the UK for over 20 years. • Worked for the Dutch Government based in Amsterdam for 10 years developing international projects. • Since 1997 worked on renewable energies particular waste to energy and solar thermal.

LARKFLEET SOLAR STEAM

• Developing a solar thermal technology under the brand name Solar Steam Limited.

• The Solar Steam experimental prototype in Bourne UK represents the first real scale solar thermal linear concentrator using Fresnel lenses which already has a UK patent.

• Fresnel lenses are more flexible in optical design and less expensive to manufacture when compared to conventional parabolic mirrors.

THE CHALLENGE: NEED FOR AFFORDABLE SOLAR THERMAL ENERGY

THE CONCEPT: FRESNEL LENSES IN CONCENTRATED SOLAR APPLICATIONS

Fresnel lenses (1823): • Convex lens compressed into a plane • Finite prism pitch • Slope angle • Draft component

Solar Steam Technology

THE CONCEPT: FRESNEL LENSES IN CONCENTRATED SOLAR APPLICATIONS

Disadvantages: • Lower concentration ratio • UV degradation • Manufacturing process

Advantages: • Light weight • Cost-effective lens design • Plastic material – cheaper

Main Applications: • Collimated light-house lights • Magnifying lens • High concentration Photo-voltaic

THE CONCEPT: KEY TECHNOLOGY DIFFERENTIATORS

Use of Fresnel lenses (not reflectors) Dual Axis Linear System

Steam generation (Patent application)

Solar Steam Technology

LARKFLEET SOLAR STEAM

• In early 2017, Larkfleet secured a grant from Innovate UK to take forward the solar steam prototype design to a more commercial stage for applications in the “Sun Belt” regions of the world.

• The scope of the project is to develop a containerised solar steam system in conjunction with our Indian partner company & Cranfield University.

• The design has been submitted for patents in India, Mexico, EU and UK.

• The prototype system is currently being manufactured in India and will be completed by early 2019.

SOLAR STEAM MOBILE DESIGN OVERVIEW

• 20 or 40 ft shipping container to hold the whole solar steam system.

• The system is fixed on hydraulic ramps and can automatically track the sun in a 2D configuration.

• Produces steam/hot water for various uses as it is a totally modular system that can be easily replicated.

• When the system is not in use it can be stored safely in the container for easy re-location if required.

SOLAR STEAM FIXED DESIGN OVERVIEW

• Produce hot water/steam to be used in commercial and industrial applications.

• Dual-Axis tracking.

• Fixed unit suitable for rooftops.

• Capable to withstand strong environmental conditions.

SOLAR STEAM SYSTEM USES

• Produce hot water/steam to be used in rural areas and for drinking water production purposes or water desalination

• Produce hot water/steam and run a turbine/generator to produce electricity in the rural areas.

• Produce hot water/steam for rural sanitation process

• Produce hot water/steam for off grid cooling purpose

• Off grid system for disaster relief areas and high altitude areas for military uses.

MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES

• Solar Steam Limited has entered a collaboration agreement from Gujarat Energy Research & Management Institute (GERMI) and Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University in India.

• GERMI & PDPU will provide assistance on design testing, R&D installation in various applications.

• Solar Steam is looking for market collaboration, licencing or leasing arrangement with client/partners world wide.
