AMERICAN LEGION RIDERSCHAPTER 66

First of all, the American Legion Ridermeeting time has changed to 1730 hrs.(5:30 PM), still on the first Wednesday ofthe month. This allows us to conductmeetings without tabling issues due to the1900 hr. Post meeting.

Next, at the 2017 American LegionRiders Convention, the question was asked,"If your ALR Chapter were to cease to existwould your home town notice"? I have beengiving this challenge a lot of thought.

The state has several American LegionPosts having problems with a "Legion vs.Riders" mentality. I am very happy to reportPost 66 is not one of them. Yea, there was ashort period of time where some "OleSchool" Legionnaires weren't too sure abouta bunch of "Bikers" hanging around theirPost. With a lot of hard work, the Ridersquickly changed their attitude. These"Bikers" started participating in fundraisers;Welcome Homes for our Brother/Sisters inArms; seeing home our fallen to "PostEverlasting," with full honors; supportingPost events; and even being responsible forevents that led up to the purchase of thePost's new refrigeration units in the bar. Then I asked myself, "How active are ALRmembers within our Post? Well, that didn'ttake that much thought. Chapter 66 Ridershave only been chartered for five years, yetare holding some major offices at the Post.Let's just start with Post 66's PostCommander, First Vice Commander, Sgt. atArms., and at least two Executive Members, not to mention the SALs Commander,Adjutant, and Chaplin; yes, they are all ALRmembers. So, if the Riders were to dissolveand cut all strings, the Post would definitelynotice. But what about our community?Over the last few years, I have seen the Post

step up to the 9/11 ceremony; Fourth ofJuly Open-House at the Post; and yes, thepancake breakfast. As Riders, SALs, Auxiliary, and Legionnaires, our next step is toestablish an even higher profile within ourcommunity at large. That way, when we ridethrough town, we are recognized as the"Good Guys" who are still serving…

CHAPLAIN’S CHATMy youngest son, who is in the Army,

will be deploying to Afghanistan shortly. This got me thinking about our Legionmotto – beginning with – “for God andCountry.”

As Veterans, we have put that intopractice quite literally; and many of oursons, daughters, family and friends continuethe commitment for God and Country. It isup to us, the Legion family, to wholeheartedly, support those who are carryingon those beliefs and commitments that havemade our Country so remarkable.

So, as Chaplain, I would like to remindall of you to not only think well of our activeMilitary, but to write them, send them carepackages – keep informed on what they aredoing; and to pray for their well-being on aregular basis.

Peace be with you.Bart Topham, Chaplain
