Spatial Statistics in the National Geoportal

2016 Visualisation Workshop Marja Tammilehto-Luode

Presentation outline

• Introduction to the national geoportal • Statistics in the national geoportal • Oskari platform – Open Source applications • Spatial Analysis tools • Demo • Conclusions – Future challenges

Paikkatietoikkuna – the National Geoportal in Finland

• MAP WINDOW – Standard view services (WMS) and standard web feature services (WFS) for browsing and analysing data

• GEODATA SEARCH - Metadata service

• Maintenance by the National Land Survey of Finland • More than 2,000 datasets from more than 50 organisations –

accessible via the National Geoportal interface • The data are on data providers’ own servers but published by the

interface (e.g. Geoserver) via the National Geoportal • All services are based on open source code applications • All data are free-of-charge

Statistics in the national geoportal

• Inspired by the Inspire directive • Fixed contents of spatial statistics (WMS-, WFS-formats)

• Population distribution - by 1 km x 1 km grids and 5 km x 5 km grids - by municipality-based statistical units

• Municipality-based statistical units • Educational institutions • Production and Industrial Facilities • In addition: e.g. Road Traffic Accidents,

PAAVO – Open data by postal code areas (1/2015-) • Metadata • Statistics Finland’s website:

Oskari platform Open source applications

• Created and maintained by the National Land Survey • Built on standard Open Source components (OpenLayers,

Geotools, Geoserver…) • Promotes extension of functionalities in a coordinated manner –

integration of applications • Open Source - MIT/EUPL dual licensing • Guidelines, source code and all the content on the Developer

Web Site • Oskari network (more than 30 user organisations in Finland),

management group, integrator (e.g. responsible for maintaining the Developer Web Site)

• The National Geoportal is an implementation of using the Oskari platform

Spatial analysis tools on the National Geoportal

Developed by the joint project (NSI/NMA)

Joint project between the NSI and NMA ”Spatial Statistics on Web”

• Collaborative project between Statistics Finland and the National Land Survey of Finland

• To improve the services of the national geoportal from the scope of statistics

• To gain experiences about open source web applications • Focus on analysis tools for grid-based data • Used Agile methods with user stories

• Funded by a Eurostat grant (2014-2015)

• Learning from each other – promoting cooperation between the

NSI and NMA

Demo

Spatial analysis tools

11 May 2016 Marja Tammilehto-Luode 12

One can export the results of analysis

11 May 2016 Marja Tammilehto-Luode 13

One can create an ”embedded map”

11 May 2016 Marja Tammilehto-Luode 14

…and publish it on his/her own website

Conclusions

Future challenges

Conclusions

• Inspiring cooperation between the NSI and NMA • Beneficial to both participants

• Use of data in the geoportal is monitored by Inspire standards • Open source application on the web feasible

• Further development is promising • Components reusable and available for everyone

• Cooperation with other Oskari platform users • Oskari platform for Statistics Finland? Or only embedded maps

on our website?

Future challenges

• Small area statistics - Open data/Restricted used data/Charged data

• Innovative analysis tools – easy-to-use tools • Sophisticated methods to handle confidential data on the fly • Spatial statistics portal as further development of the Oskari

platform including thematic mapping, charts and diagrams? • Standards for interoperable spatial statistics and geospatial

information
