Pastor’s Pondering Now that I am 56, it is more challenging to remember where I
have things, or even what I have sometimes. However, in some
book that I possess there is a delightful story about world famous
organist who gave a performance the latter part of 1800’s. The
organ he played required someone to pump some bellows behind
it to force the air through the pipes. At the first intermission, the
young boy who had that task came out as the crowd applauded
and said to the maestro, “we did real good.”. The man looked at
the boy with disdain and said, “who are WE? I am the one that
they are applauding. It is my study, my skill, and my presence
that they adore.” As the curtain drew back for the second part of
the performance, the organist began to play, but no sound came
forth. The crowd began to murmur as the organist began to pull
out different stops, play a different register and still no sound.
Suddenly, he heard the boy’s voice from behind the organ. “Do
you know who WE are now?” All the maestro’s talent was use-
less without the boy pumping the air into the organ. This week-
end, we honor St. John the Baptist. He was needed to prepare the
way for Jesus. He announced that the time was near. He helped
people recognize their need for forgiveness and then provided a
means to achieve it. We live in a world that celebrates the stars.
Actors are paid millions of dollars, but without proper costumes,
make up, lighting and direction, they could not perform to a high
standard. The same is true with athletes, CEO’s, and others. We
need supporting people in all areas of our lives, especially in our
faith journey. Before children can hear our catechists and parish-
ioners can listen to me or Fr. Jack, they need to be predisposed to
do so. Younger children need to be physically brought to our
spaces. People need to have heard about Jesus, the Church and
our faith before they hunger more deeply for his Word. People
need to see the corporeal and spiritual works of mercy in action
before they can believe in the goodness and presence of God.
The great question for each of us this week is, what I am doing to
prepare the way of Jesus into the hearts and minds of the people
in my life?
Following up on this point, do you know of someone who is in-
terested in the becoming Catholic, or what that may involve?
Often times such individuals have specific questions or concerns
that they need answered before deciding on a path to follow. The
summer is a great time to explore some of these questions in a
relaxed atmosphere. Please have them contact Fr Phil, or con-
sider making an appointment to see me with them for the first
time.
There will not be a Friday morning mass on June
29th due to the priest’s schedule that day.
THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

SPIRITUAL EXERCISES OF ST. IGNATIUS:
19TH ANNOTATION RETREAT
Are you:
Looking to deepen your relationship with God?
Wanting to rekindle your prayer life?
Yearning for a greater connectedness with all of creation?
Facing a major decision?
Wondering about Pope Francis’ beautiful spirituality?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, consider making the
Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, 19th Annotation Retreat. This 30-
week retreat begins in September and ends in May. It is commonly
called, “The Retreat of Daily Life”. It is held at St. Martha Church, in
Kennebunk, on Wednesdays. You would have the choice of EITHER
Wednesday morning OR Wednesday evening. Each session consists of
meeting one on one with a prayer guide (spiritual director), and listening
to a reflection done by one of the guides. Daily praying with scripture is
also part of the retreat. The Exercises are the background out of which
Pope Francis comes.
You are welcome to call Maureen Fulford (207-468-4070) or Ellie Flavin
(207-985-2971) with any questions you might have and to receive the
application.

IN CONNECTION WITH THE PROGRAM “PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN”
In the interest of children’s safety, we ask that children not be allowed to leave Mass to use the restrooms downstairs, unless they are accom-panied by an adult. Because we are a public building, doors are required to be unlocked, allowing entrance to all.
THE BOTTLE RELIEF FUND, sponsored by the Knights of Co-
lumbus, has gotten even easier. While celebrating
with family and friends this summer season, please
save your bottles and cans. For the convenience of
parishioners, you can drop your bottles and cans off
at JD’s Package Store & Redemption, 13 Sokokis Trail,
E. Waterboro (across from Hannaford). Let them
know they are for “St. Matthew Bottle Relief Fund”.
Those who wish to continue dropping off at the Bottle
Shed here at church, may continue to do so. Thank you for all
your support.
