Heather:So,Ireally,really,reallyhatethecold,butIdo…Imean,theresearchallsuggestslikeoneofthevery,verybestthingsthatwecandoforourselvesistotrainourbodiestoadapttobothhot/heatandcold.So,likewhenI’minmysaunaandlikemybodyisproducingheatshockproteinswhichprotectsDNAandtheydoallkindsofthings,theyareamazing.Likewealreadytalkedaboutthosecrazywormsthatlikelive30%longerifyougivethemexposuretoheatbecausetheyproducethoselittlemagicalheatshockproteins.Butintermsoflikebiohacksthereisnothingthatbeatscold.AndthatkindofstinksbecauseIhatethecold,butIcanstanditfortwominutes.Andso,youtalkedmeintogoingtothiscryotherapyplacewithyou.Andso,Ihoppedinthereandohmygosh,likeitwasn’tasbadlikeIremembersayingtotheguywhoobviouslyhasnoframeof

adapttocoldsomuchbetteruntilthatbrownfatstartstofadeaway.Andtheonlyreasonitfadesawayisbecausethebodydecidesyoudon’tneeditanymoreifyou’reinatemperaturecontrolledenvironment.Butlikethat’soneoftheweirdthingsaboutthewaythatwelivenow.Weliveinanenvironmentthatdoesn’tfluctuatelikeitnormallydidlikehotandcoldthroughspring,summerandyouknow,likedifferentseasons.Andthenalsoevenlikerealbasicthingslikedayandnight.

Katie:Yeah.Well,okay.Andyousaidlikeenvironmentsthatdon’tfluctuate.Andso,likeanotherconfessionwecanmakeisfloattanks.

Heather:That’strue,yeah.

Katie:Becausethatenvironmentdoesnotfluctuateatall.Iknowlikethesearen’tasgoodforyoubecauseofmutationsIthinkandstuffasme,butbasicallyyouhaven’theardofit.Theideaisyou’refloatinginsensorydeprivation.So,you’reinabout1,000poundsofEpsomsaltdissolvedinwaterthat’sexactlyatbodytemperatureandyou’realsodeprivedoflightandsound.So,it’salittlebitcrazythefirsttime.

Heather:Yeah.Imean,actuallyIreally,reallylovedit.Liketheysaidthatitcanscareyoualittlebit,butIthinkifyou’relikeamomofwell,okaymomofone,momofanyonethenlikesensorydeprivationislikenotthescariestthingyou’dfacethatday.AndIreallyloveditandIkindofthinkmaybewhatKatieistalkingaboutisIfeltalittlenauseousafteritbecausethemagnesiumsulfatehaslikeasulfurcomponentthatIdidn’tprocessreallywell.Butmybodyactuallydoesprocesssulfurbetternowsoweshouldmakeadate.

Soessentiallyataverybasiclevel,you’resignalingyourbodyat11:00atnightthatit’s12:00intheafternoonandthatit’stimetobealertandawakeandtogohuntandfishanddoallthethingsyou’resupposedtodo,butyou’retryingtosleeprightafterthat.So,ifanybodyhaslookedattheresearchlikesleepdisturbancesarehugeandthey’rerising.Hormoneproblemsarehugeandthey’rerising.Likekidsarehavingtheseissuesandweareallstillstaringatbluelightscreensatalltimesinthenight.So,IthinkIwrotethatpostlikefiveyearsago,butmythoughtwasbywearingglassesthatblockedthosespectrumsofbluelight,youcanatleastmitigatesomeofthedamageoftechnologybecauseneitheroneofusisreadytolikeleavetheinternetbehindandlikehavenotechnology.

Katie:Yeah.It’skindofimportanttoourdailylifeandIfeellikealotofpeoplewouldfeelthesameway,butyoudon’thavetogetthenegativeeffectsofit.So,mythoughtwaswearingorangesunglasseswithcertainfiltersonthemhelpblockthebluelightsothatatnightyou’renottellingyourbodyit’sthemiddleoftheafternoonanditimprovesyoursleep.AndIknowyouwearthemtoo.Weareallweirdtogetherbutlikewhat’sbeenyourexperiencewiththem?

Heather:Ihavetriedaftermysecondchild.Istartedtohitlikemajoradrenalissues.LikeIwasjust…Iwantedtobesupermom.Iwantedtodoitallbutthat’snotreallypossibleforanyone.AndIwasn’treallyhonoringwhatmybodywastellingme.IwastryingreallyhardtofitintowhatIthoughtIshoulddo.AndIgotmyselfintroubleandsohealingfromthatreallyrequiredthatIstartlisteningtomybodyagain.Buttheproblemwasthatmybodywasn’tevengettingtherightsignals.EverythingwasconfusedandsooneofthefirstthingsIhadtodowasrealignmybodyclockwithnaturewithoutmovingintoayard.Andso,IstartedusingtheblueglassesatnightandIstartedfeelingthesleepthatIwasgettingatnightwassomuchmorerestorativeandlikedeeper.AndthenIwasyouknow,butthethingwasformeatleastwhenIstartedwakingupintheday,ittookactuallytwopieces.LikeitwastwopartsofthesameholeandIendedupexposingmyselftobrightlightearlyinthemorningtooinordertogetthefulleffect.Becauseyou’reright,bluelightisreallygood.Inthemorning,itcanstimulatetheproductionofserotonin.Ithelpsyoufeelmorealertanditdoesallkindsofgoodthings.So,settingmybodyclockbyjustdayandnighthasdoneeverythingforme.Imean,it’slikeithelpsmefocusbetter.Itimprovesmymoodanddefinitelyithelpsmesleepbetter.
