CourseDescription:Thiscross-disciplinarygraduatecourseprovidesaholisticoverviewoftheenvironmental,social,economicandgovernance(ESEG)aspectsofsustainabilitymanagementandhowtoaddressthemstrategicallytomaximizebusinessandproductperformancetomeetchangingstakeholderexpectations.Youwillhavetheopportunitytolearnaboutavarietyofsustainabilitychallengesfacedbyavarietyofindustrysectors,suchas:

• mitigationandadaptationtoclimatechange;• energy,water,materialsandresourcemanagement;• minimizingsupplychainrisksthatcanderailbusinesscontinuity.

Theneedtoapproachthesebroadchallengesinastrategicmannerisdiscussed,alongwithbestpracticesthatinclude:

• goingbeyondcorporatesocialresponsibility;• sustainabilityreportingframeworkstomanageandcommunicateperformance;and• theimportanceoflifecyclethinkingforcredibleenvironmentalmarketingactivities.

Youwillgainacross-sector,cross-functional,cross-disciplinaryperspectivethatwillprepareyoutoleadandfacilitatesustainabilitymanagementprogramsinvirtuallyanyindustry.Theimportanceofintegratingstrategicsustainabilitymanagementintotheinterconnectednetworkofsystemsthatmakeupthebusiness-to-businessvaluechainwillbediscussed.Thevalueofstrategicallymanagingsustainabilityimpactsthroughoutthefulllifecycleofproductswillalsobeaddressed.Internationallyrecognizedframeworks,bestpractices,methodologies,toolsandstandardswillbeintroducedasvehiclestotietheconceptstogetherforpracticalapplicationofsolutionsthatsupportleadershipinsustainabilityperformanceimprovement.

Courseprerequisites:Priorexperienceintheworkforceorbusiness/entrepreneurship,familiaritywithenvironmentalmanagementsystemsandbasicconceptsofeconomic,environmentalandsocialsustainabilityisanasset.ProficiencyintheEnglishlanguageisrecommendedasaprerequisitetomaximizebenefitfrominteractiveclassdiscussions.

Thisassignmentconsistsofresearchandashortreportrelatedtothelecturecontentofthesubjectareaofintegratingproductlifecyclemanagementforsustainability.Selectaproductorgroupofproductswithinamanufacturingindustryofyourchoiceandreportonmanagementoftheirenvironmentaland/orsocialsustainabilityimpactsfromalifecyclethinkingperspective.Pleasedonotmerelysummarizethecontentofthelectures,butdemonstratehowproductlifecyclemanagementconcepts,frameworksandtoolshavebeenappliedinpracticeforproductsustainabilitymanagement.

CaseStudyProject(40%ofcoursegrade,3parts)Theprojectconsistsofcreatingacasestudy,presentationandreportthatwillallowyoutodemonstratetheapplicationofmultiplebusinessandproductsustainabilitymanagementapproachesandpracticesfromamulti-stakeholderperspective.Selectanexistingcross-disciplinaryorcross-sectorstrategicsustainabilitymanagementchallengewithinaproductmanufacturingindustrysectorforyourcasestudyproject.Thebreakdownofgradingfortheprojectisasfollows:1. ProjectProposal:20%,2pages-DueendofWeek7

Theprojectmustbepre-approvedbasedonasuccessfulprojectproposal.2. ProjectPresentation:30%,10-15minutes+5mins.discussion-tobescheduled

YouwillpresenttheprojectcasestudyresultstotheclassinWeeks11or12.Itismandatorytoattendallprojectcasestudypresentationsandtoparticipateininteractivediscussions,tolearnaboutmultipleindustriesandperspectivesfromyourpeers.

3. ProjectReport:4-5pages,50%-DueendofWeek11Youwillsubmitafinalprojectreportsummarizingthesustainabilityinitiativeorchallenge,objectives,stakeholderanalysis,collaborativesolutionsapplied,demonstratingthemethodology,toolsandpracticesused,resultsandconclusions.

In-classparticipation:(20%)TheweeklyfoundationallecturematerialwillbepresentedbywebcastorwebinarduringthescheduledclasstimeonThursdays.TheweeklylecturematerialandselectedcoursereadingswillsubsequentlybediscussedinclassonTuesdays.Pleasestrivetoattendallin-classsessionsandparticipateinclassdiscussionseachweek.Repeatedabsencesduringscheduledin-classtimeswillnotworkforthiscourse.Mandatoryandoptionalweeklycoursereadingswillrequire2-4hoursoftimeoutsideofclasseachweek.Extractthekeyinformation,describethecross-cuttingchallenges,issuesandinsightsandmakenotesforsharingandcriticaldiscussioninclassandbycommentingonline.Youwillberequiredtoparticipateingroupdiscussions,breakoutsessions,debates,casestudyreviewandotherfacilitateddiscussionsinclass.Youwillalsobegradedonthefrequencyandqualityofyouronlineparticipationinthecoursediscussionforum.1.
