Attracting Adult Learners through Expanded Prior Learning Assessment   Institutions know they need to offer employable degrees through alternative formats in order to address the needs of adult learners. But how can you distinguish yourself from other institutions offering similar benefits? And, how can you ensure that the students who are most likely to retain and complete will choose your campus? One proven way is by offering flexible options for accelerating degree completion; data shows that students who complete PLA credits are 2 ½ times more likely to graduate. See how CAEL’s new online PLA service, LearningCounts.org, can help you attract, retain, and graduate the best adult learners.

Why College Completion Matters

U.S. position as a world leader in education has slipped from 4th –11th (1997 – 2009)

By 2018, 63% of jobs will require some college or above

To frame some of our discussion today, we would like to share some statistics that shape why we at CAEL work so hard to improve completion rates among adult learners. Focus on the completion agenda has been picking up at both the national and institution level. One of the early research projects around the completion agenda came from Georgetown University. This study indicates a downward trend in national attainment rates and that projects a gap in job readiness. More recently, a study by Manpower has estimated that by 2020, there will be 123M high-skill, high-pay jobs available in the U.S., but only 50M Americans with the right education to fill them.

Tools to Meet these Workforce Needs

Common core initiatives / Transferability

2+2 programs create alliances between affordable community colleges and strong four-year programs

Dual-enrollment programs encourage a more prepared K-16 pipeline

But these are traditional approaches to a nontraditional problem.

Finite number of traditional students –Focus on adult learners

Increase the numbers of highly-trained, college-educated individuals in the workforce

Prepare for emerging industries

Build on transferable skills
