Holden fills mid-size sector with Malibu
BY DEAN TAYLOR
I’ve said it before, butthere is somethingspecial about driving an
all new car — as in acompletely new model. This time it is the
Holden Malibu fromRosetown Holden — theEpica replacement thatgives Holden a modernrival in the all importantmid-size sedan market. The Malibu is a global
GM model to be sold inmore than 100 markets. It comes in two trim
levels — CD and CDX —and the 2.4-litre petrolengine or optional 2.0-litrecommon rail turbo dieselin both grades is matchedto a six-speed automatictransmission with ActiveSelect.I drove the diesel vari-
ant this month in CDX form— top-of-the line. The engine makes
117kW of power and350Nm of torque whiledelivering economy of6.5L/100km.It is an attractive look-
ing car and clearly part ofthe Holden stable. And while it is the little
brother to the Commo-dore, it has similar roadpresence and the samefeeling of space. The drive is excellent. There are no surprises
— great power deliveryand smoothness with goodhandling and brakingwhen needed. This isexactly what customers
want.Electronic stability con-
trol is standard, along withsix airbags and there is anautomatic release electricpark brake system.Malibu CDX models run
on 18-inch alloys with
245/45 R18 BridgestonePotenza rubber.All Malibu models are
equipped with a seven-inch colour touchscreenwith the MyLink app-enabled infotainment sys-tem along with driver
assistance technologiessuch as reverse camera, rear park assist and pushbutton start.Steer ing wheel
controls take care of theimpressive nine-speakeraudio system, Bluetooth
and cruise control. There isalso climate air control, auto headlamps andpower adjustable frontseats to name a few of thefeatures. The Malibu has sensor
key technology and push
button start.Extra child safety is
provided with the ISOFIXchild seat anchorage sys-tem and extra room ifneeded by the 60/40 fold-ing rear seat to extend thealready impressive boot
space.It has the maximum 5
star ANCAP safety ratingand across the boardoffers a serious dollar fordollar challenge to othermajor players in this seg-ment.

A giant leap for Commodore
BY DEAN TAYLOR
Think Holden, thinkCommodore — unlessyou’re old and think
HQ.Commodores have been
the Aussie built Holden foryears — and now there’sthe new one that reallysteps up the game — theVF.I drove the SV6 from
Rosetown Holden andenjoyed the new look, thenew interior, the new feeland the new party trick. The SV6 uses the 3.6
litre SIDI V6and pro-duces210kW ofpower andtorque of350Nm.This
refined andpowerfulengine nowdeliverseconomy of 9l/100km.I had the six speed
automatic transmission andenjoyed a great drivingexperience. The party trick is the
hands-free parking, bothparallel and carpark style.I’ve tried it before on
other brands and it isspooky fun — but veryuseful. It works well on the big
Holden — Rosetown Holdenhave a test area set up soyou can try it for yourself. The really impressive
stuff with the VF is the levelof equipment— it is right up
therewith thebest ofthe best.
The interior is a classymix of materials and superbdesign and practicality.Sports type seating,
leather features and a wrap
around feel make it comfort-able and inviting. Some of the technology
includes MyLinkinfotainment and touch-screen, embedded apps,Bluetooth and automaticrelease electric park brake. The VF has the maxi-
mum 5 star ANCAP ratingand includes such featuresas rear view camera, auto-matic park assist and blindspot alert. The car looks more com-
pact, but is as roomy as ever— and with its bold frontaltreatment and slight bulge
in the bonnet, looks like itmeans business. The SV6 runs on 18"
mags and has dual exhaustsand tasteful rear end treat-ment.I’m looking forward to
driving the whole range —you can too.

Safekids backs new restraint law
TC110713DB05A
CORRECT use of booster seats and child restraints save young lives.
Child safety advocatesacknowledged that the newcar seat law requiring kids to
use an appropriate child restraintup to their seventh birthday is apositive step forward in keepingchildren safe on New Zealandroads. However, Safekids New Zea-
land, doctors and a family whosechildren survived a horror car crashthanks to booster seats, remindsparents that age seven is not amagic number, and that primaryschool kids are safer in a boosterseat until they are 148cm tall.In January 2010 the Pitts-Brown
family of four was involved in a carcrash near Te Anga when the trailerof a rubbish truck crossed thecentre line into their path, hittingtheir people-mover head on.Dad Blair suffered multiple
fractures, internal injuries and asevere head injury that put him in acoma in Waikato Hospital for 39days. Mum Lou spent two weeks inhospital with a broken arm, fractured ribs and shoulder and amild head injury.Despite the severe injuries to
both parents, their two childrenArchie, then 7, and Finley, 6, whowere sitting in booster seats, survived the crash with minorbruising on their shoulders. Theywere fit enough to leave thehospital that same day.‘‘Emergency services and
doctors told us that if the boys werenot using booster seats, they couldhave suffered severe seatbelt-related injuries or worse, couldhave been ejected out of the car. Those booster seats saved ourchildren’s lives,’’ Mrs Pitts-Brownsaid.Leading paediatric intensivist
Dr Liz Segedin, who treats some ofNew Zealand’s most severelyinjured children involved in carcrashes, agree with Mrs Pitts-
Brown’s view on the life-savingbenefits of booster seats.‘‘Seat belts are designed to fit
an adult body, and if children usean adult seatbelt that does not fitthem correctly, their bodies movemore than they should,’’ said DrSegedin said.‘‘By just using adult seatbelts,
children are at an increased risk ofsevere head injuries, injuries to theabdominal organs, spinal fracturesand of paralysis due to damage tothe spinal cord,’’ she added. To significantly reduce the risk
of injury, Dr Segedin and SafekidsNew Zealand recommend that chil-dren use appropriate childrestraints or booster seats untilthey are 148cm tall.Booster seats, recommended
for primary school children, work by
lifting the child up so that theshoulder belt fits the child properlyacross the chest, and the lap beltsits properly across the strongbones of the pelvis that can absorbcrash forces.‘‘By using a booster seat, in the
same kind of crash, the differencecould mean an uninjured childinstead of a severely injured oreven paralysed child,’’ Dr Segedinsaid.Safekids New Zealand have
been campaigning for a height-based rule since 2007.Some children grow faster than
others, but the majority of NewZealand children who turn seven-years-old are still too small to usean adult seat belt,’’ Ms Weaversaid.‘‘As parents, it’s our obligation
to give children the best chance ofsurvival in the event of a car crash, which is keeping them in anappropriate child restraint orbooster seat until they the rightheight,’’ Ms Weaver added.Safekids Safety Messages:• The higher you sit, the safer
the fit — keep kids in an appropri-ate child restraint of booster seatuntil they are 148cm tall.• Use the correct child restraint
that’s right for your child’s height.• Buy a child restraint that
meets NZ Safety Standards.• The back seat is safest for
kids.• For information on installing
your child restraints, standards andother safety information, visitwww.mysafekids.org.nz/passengersafety.
Restraint law stepin the right
direction: Plunket
Plunket welcomes the passing into law of anincrease in the age limit for the mandatory use ofchild car restraints from age five to seven.Sue Campbell, Plunket’s National Child Safety
Advisor, says this is good news.‘‘Car crashes are one of the biggest dangers to New
Zealand children. We have one of the highest child roadfatality rates in the OECD. Around five children arekilled or injured every week on this country’s roads.Today’s law change is a positive step towards reducingthis number — it means that five and six-year-olds willbe better protected.‘‘The simple truth is that car seats and boosters
seats save lives.‘‘Adult seat belts are designed for adults — they
don’t fit children properly until they are 148cm tall.‘‘Without a booster seat, an adult seat belt sits too
high on a child. The lap part of the belt rides up overtheir tummy and the sash part lies across the neck. Ina crash this can result in serious head and spinal cordinjuries and horrific injuries to the abdomen includingruptured livers and spleens.‘‘What booster seats do is raise children up and
position them so that they get the full safety benefit ofthe adult seat belt’’.Ms Campbell says that these latest changes are a
move towards aligning New Zealand legislation withthat of other countries.‘‘Research shows that a child should remain in a
booster seat until around 148cm tall. For themajority ofchildren this is somewhere between 9-12 years of age’’,she says.‘‘We would like to see New Zealand law progress
even further to see all child passengers up to 11 years ofage, or up to 148 cm in height, use an appropriate childrestraint at all times. This would bring us in line withother OECD countries. The UK, Canada and manyAmerican states have gone further with theirrequirements for booster seat use.‘‘In New Zealand we’re fortunate to have an
increasing range of booster seats to fit children of allages.‘‘Plunket and other agencies will continue to
promote the use of booster seats well beyond theseventh birthday but these latest changes are apositive step towards keeping older kids safer invehicles.’’

Anew campaign is rolling outacross the Waikato to cre-ate awareness of the ‘ele-
phants’ of the road and reduce thenumber of near-misses andcrashes involving ‘mice’.‘‘Trucks are on average four
times larger than a car, which isthe reason behind the ‘elephant vsmouse’ campaign name,’’ saidWaikato Regional Council’s roadsafety coordinator, MoniqueHaines.Heavy motor vehicles feature
in 20 percent of the region’scrashes, but in less than half ofthese the truck is at fault.‘‘Tragically, given the truck’s
size and weight these crashesoften result in serious injury ordeath, and in many instances it’sthe other motorist,’’ Mrs Hainessaid. The two -month Wa ika to
Regional Road Safety EducationGroup campaign is based on thetop four messages receivedth rough more than 3000responses from drivers who weresurveyed at THE Expo at MysteryCreek in March.‘‘We asked truck drivers what
they would most like to talk aboutif they were given the opportunityto have a safety conversation withother motorists.‘‘Their number one message
for other motorists is to indicateclearly. They would also like themto be more aware of truckdimensions and understand thatthey need space to manoeuvre onthe road.‘‘And because trucks are really
big and really heavy it’s difficultfor them to stop quickly to avoid
collisions,’’ she explained. The messages are especially
important in the Waikato, a keyfreight route in the North Islandwith more heavy commercialvehicle movements per day thanany other region in New Zealand.Te Kauwhata Transport has
been heavily involved in previousregional truck campaigns and isplacing some of the ‘elephant vsmouse’ messages on the backs ofits trucks.‘‘We’re really eager to be part
of a campaign which supports ourdrivers and helps to make the roadsafer for everyone,’’ said JohnMcNamara of Te Kauwhata Trans-port.‘‘We’ve supported this cam-
paign from the outset because itrecognises that truck drivers arenot always at fault in a crash andother motorists need to be moreaware of our size and theimplications of that on stoppingdistances and manoeuvrability,’’Mr McNamara said. The key messages will be
advertised on radio, and pro-moted on the backs of trucks andon large roadside billboards onthe main freight routes in Huntly,Tokoroa and Morrinsville. The campaign is an initiative of
the Waikato Regional Road SafetyEducation Group led by WaikatoRegional Council, working in con-junction with other regional safetystakeholders including the NZTransport Agency, NZ Police, ACCand councils.

Diesel ASX boosts appealBY DEAN TAYLOR
The addition of a dieselengine to theMitsubishi ASX range
is bound to increase themodel’s popularity.Case in point— the first
model I was supposed totest drive at InghamDrivenwas sold before I had timeto get out of my office andhit the road.Luckily a second
Mitsubishi ASX Diesel 4WDLS arrived in time to drivethis week. There is also a Sport
model that adds a fewmore luxuries, biggerwheels and HID electroniclighting. The ASX has always
been a great alternative toa family car, with extra rideheight and, in 4WD form, the ability to perform someuseful off-road tasks aswell. Now the diesel option
offers more power andbetter economy to the mix.The 2.2 litre DOHC
intercooled turbodieselmakes 112kW of power andan all important 366Nm oftorque. It is matched to a six
speed automatic andselectable 4WD (2WD —4WD Auto — 4WD Locked)which makes sure thepower is used to the bestadvantage, while beingable to return economyfigures of 5.8l/100km.The on-road perform-
ance is superb. Accelera-
tion is achieved withoutfuss, it is quiet and refinedand handles well thanks toa host of equipment. This includes adaptive
electric power steeringwhich works wonderfully. The ASX is roomy— but
not big or cumbersome.Inside is a great place
to be.It features a touch
screen sound andBluetooth system, inde-pendent climate control, steering wheel controls forall the main functions andcomfortable seating anddriving position. The touch screen
doubles as reversingscreen, which adds to theoverall safety of the ASX.In that regard the
vehicle has the highest 5star ANCAP rating thanksto a myriad of safetyfeatures, such as driver, passenger, side, curtainand driver’s knee airbags
and three-point ELRseatbelts with pre-tensioners.The Mitsubishi cross-
over vehicle also enjoysMitsubishi’s 10/5 DiamondAdvantage Warranty — alot of vehicle and peace ofmind for a low to mid $40Kbuyer.
Special Miragefrom team atInghamDrivenIt looks like a special edition Mitsubishi Mirage —but the ‘cat-like’ model in their showroom is simplya locally produced model utilising some of the
accessories available in the range. The team admit using the black base model was
aimed at evoking memories of earlier special editionMirages.InghamDriven have simply added the stripe, colour
coded front and rear spoilers and side skirts and a setof mag wheels from the accessory list to create theunique model. They say it comes in cheaper than the GLS Mirage,
and has a unique look. The sales team say customers often overlook the
company supplied accessories, when they couldpersonalise their new car for a very reasonable price.Mirage exterior accessories, for instance, also
include chrome garnishes for lights and grille, weather shields, mud flaps, daytime running lampsand bumper corner extensions, while the interior canreceive custom mats, scuff plates, boot liner and matset.Mitsubishi also have a number of accessories
across the range, such as reversing sensors andsafety equipment.See the team at InghamDriven to cerate your
