• Ask 5W1H questions (who, what, where, when, why, how)

• Check their understanding eg: retelling

• Familiarise them the sight words (Dolch sight words)

• Ask for child’s opinion (point of view)

• Role modelling

14

• Provide text-rich environment at home

• Watching educational videos on language learning

What can Parents do to support learning of EL?

What can Parents do to support learning of EL?

• Five Finger Test (to check child’s reading level of book)• “Open the book to the middle and choose any page to

read• Read the page (aloud to you if possible)• Put out 1 finger for every word you do not know or

cannot pronounce”• If child has 5 fingers out, the book is not suitable• If no finger is up and child is reading very slowly, likely

How do we encourage MT

learning?

“Young children may not be motivated to

learn the Chinese language if they are

told that this is to preserve the culture.

Instead, parents and educators can help

by making it fun and useful for them to

learn the language and culture”

What you’ll see

Q: Are all homework given online? Will there be any written

homework?

A: Not all the homework will be online or e-assignments. The school

will adopt a balanced approach which means that pupils will still

get level worksheets given to the pupils in the non-iPad classes.

The only difference is that pupils in iPad classes will have activities

and assignments to support learning in the classrooms and beyond.

WORKING TOGETHER

Onboarding of SLS (Student Learning Space)

for Primary 1 students

• Letter for Parents

• Letter for Password

• As part of Ministry of Education’s (MOE) commitment to nurture future-ready learners, an

online learning platform known as the Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS) is made

available to the students.

• The SLS is an online platform with tools and curriculum-aligned resources for all students to

learn at their own pace and collaboratively. With the SLS, students can take greater

ownership of their learning and pick up skills and habits that prepare them for lifelong

learning. Teachers will also use the SLS to complement classroom teaching and learning.

• The SLS is collectively shaped by teachers and students. Taking into consideration their

ideas and feedback on the resources and tools, the system is developed iteratively to stay

dynamic and responsive.
