Principal’s Report
STEMS Schools are busy places, both for teachers and for students. There are so many demands on classroom time that maximising the impact of learning, through subject integration is crucial. One of the ways this is being achieved at our school is through the teaching of STEMS (Science, Technolo-gy, Engineering and Mathematics). Among the many benefits, these subjects promote problem solving, creativity, initiative and require a host of literacy skills. Phil Lambert, former General Manager of the Australian Curriculum at ACARA and now the lead curriculum expert to the OECD’s Education 2030 project, believes STEMs subjects also “enable participation in the knowledge-economy (communication; ICT skills; teamwork; critical thinking) and dispo-sitions that are in keeping with adapting to and coping in an ever-changing world (flexibility; growth mindset; resilience).’’ (Lambert, 2017)
At Bonnet Bay PS, our students engage in STEM learning tasks that require them to use a range of disciplines simultaneously, these include electronics, design and make challenges and imaths. Also of note is the Scope IT coding program, run on a Wednesday each week. During these lessons, students work in teams on coding based activities. Students are given a challenge and must work collaboratively to problem solve, sequence ideas, design solutions, read, comprehend and follow instructions, communicate with each other and ultimately create a solution. Later this term, we will be hosting a SCOPE IT information evening for parents. This will be a great opportunity for parents and carers to see what the program looks like, and have a go at some of the activities the students are working on this term. More information will be sent home in the coming weeks. Our teachers will also be engaging in professional learning this term as we build our capacity to deliver high quality STEMS les-sons.
Congratulations Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Zone Athlet-ics Carnival. Well done to all BBPS students. Your excellent behaviour, whole-hearted participation and sportsmanship was a credit our school. No matter what place you finished in your event, you all stood out as you embodied the values of our school so successfully. Thank you to Miss Anderson for coordi-nating our team and managing the boys long jump on the day.
Also congratulations to our senior choir and dancers who performed so well at last week’s Sutherland Shire music festival. As Friday night’s concert was the last concert in this year’s festival, I believe there were a few surprises for the audience. Thank you to Mrs Turner and Mrs Harvey for their coordination and supervision of our students at this event.
Earn and Learn This week we received a range of sports equipment deliv-ered through the Coles Earn and Learn program. Thank you to all our families and community members who brought in their dockets and supported our school. We look forward to seeing the equipment put to good use in the play-ground.

Austen and I were very proud supporters of
our BBPS team!
Peer Support
‘Types of friends’ was the focus in Peer Sup-port last week. Children explored what en-courages them to form friendships with dif-ferent people, eg. common interests, admira-ble qualities. Through various activities chil-dren identified different categories of friend-ship: best friends, friends, and people we know. Children also discussed that friend-ships can change over time for various rea-sons.
Some thoughts from the children:
In peer support I learnt that other people are very different. Adam
I learnt that you can have as many friends as you want. Hannah
I learnt about friendships. Toby KRL
The thing I liked most was finding out what I have in common with others. Evelyn KRL
The thing I liked most was doing the work. Oliver 1R
I liked the activities the most. Adam 3/4A
