USS REQUINCame to Pittsburgh via a 17- day, 2,500-mile journey from Tampa, Florida. It came into

commission in 1945 and was delivered to the Carnegie Science Center in 1990.

The movement of the USS Requin

The movement of the USS Requin up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers presents an opportunity to discuss the geography of the United States and Pennsylvania, and can incorporate all of the

Pennsylvania Geography Standards.

The Miniature Railroad focuses on historical Pittsburgh. There is an educator’s resource for the railroad that has students read a clue and they have to find the building that goes with the statement. It encourages interaction with the Railroad staff and connects to Pennsylvania history standards.

Available on the website under “Educator Resources, The Miniature Railroad and Village,” is a link for a PreK-2 and Grades 6-12 exercises. Grades 6-12 exercise addresses Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Pennsylvania history section 8.2.

SciTech presents the opportunity to see how local businesses and colleges are connected to the growth and development of our town. They have a link on

the main page that takes you to resources with Social Studies ideas called “Year-Round Resource Area.” You may also visit the Science Center to

experience them in person during specified times of the year.

Even the gift shop has connections to Social Studies! Here they have 3D puzzles of the White House and the Statue of

Liberty; globes of all shapes and sizes; as well as fun and commemorative science stuff! P.S. We had SO much fun!
