Defining the Judgment of Knowledge

The judgment of knowledge is the use of our understanding to find additional satisfaction in the object, not available to those without such understanding.

Peter and the Thimble

“She also said she would give him a kiss if he liked, but Peter did not know what she meant, and he held out his hand expectantly.”

Allusions to a Third Judgment

“Whatever by means of reason pleases through the mere concept is good.”

• Allows for use of rationality in judgments of taste

Conclusion

Although powerful and important, the judgment of beauty and of the sublime are insufficient for a complete judgment of taste—meaning, it is also necessary to have the judgment of knowledge to make a complete and proper judgment.
