SCHOOL CENSUS TO BEGIN MONDAY, COUNTY ANNOUNCES

The quadrennial school census will get under way Monday and be completed in the
month of July, Miss Thelma Jones, county school attendance supervisor, announces.
Children between the ages of six and 21 will be counted for the Board of Education and
deaf, blind and other and otherwise handicapped persons under 50 years of age will be counted
for the State Rehabilitation Dept.
All families are asked to be on the lookout for their census enumerator and to cooperate
in giving the necessary information. Miss Jones says each enumerator will be given credentials
from the school superintendent so there can be no doubt about his identity.
Thirty men and women will take the census in the city and seven in the rural beats. For
the first time Chisholm will be in the city area.
The enumerators and their respective areas will be: Marion Faulkner, Flowers School
district: Helen Mitchell, Bellingrath and Harrison school districts; Elizabeth L. Grissett, Bear
School district; Lance D. Grissett, Morningview school district; Marshall Green Jr., Cloverdale
and Forest Avenue; Maxine Fowler, McMillan and Maxwell; Mary K. Payne, Goode Street and
Ledbetter; Taylor Payne, Chilton and Rives; Marion Payne, Floyd and Bellingrath; Frances Guy,

JOTTINGS: Treman Cumming, Montgomery County High School principal, is at the
Inter-American University in Saltillo, Mexico where he is studying Spanish grammar, phonetics,
vocabulary, composition and conversation. While in Saltillo, he is living with atypical Mexican
family where only Spanish is spoken. More than 500 American and Canadian students are
enrolled in the current summer session.
Sonny and Carey Cauthen, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Cauthen of Ada, have been
accepted for junior membership in the American Guernsey Cattle Club at Peterborough, N.H. . .
Miss Jane Newman of Grady Route has asked this column to convey her appreciation to friends
and relatives for courtesies during her recent hospitalization. . . No rabies clinics will be held this

THIRTEEN BOYS, GIRLS LEAVE TODAY FOR STATE 4-H CAMP

Thirteen boys and girls will leave Monday for Auburn to represent Montgomery County
at the 1962 State 4-H Leadership Conference.
One of the group, Ned Jenkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. F. Jenkins of Pike road, has
already won the state 4-H safety essay contest and will go to Auburn on an all-expense trip to
receive his $100 cash prize. He is a member of Pike Road 4-H Club and was winner of the
Montgomery County Safety Essay contest in the boys’ division. His winning essay in the county
contest was chosen for first prize in the state contest.
Two boys, Jimmy Poole, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Poole, Fleta road, and Calvin
Sanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin O’Neal Sanders, Peterman road; and a girl, Nancy Dean,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Dean, Mount Carmel, will be voting delegates.
Allen Dees, son of Mrs. Morris Dees Sr. Mount Meigs, will be a candidate for state vice
president.
The other eight will take part in the state eliminations of various contests.
Joining other 4-H’ers who have developed tractor driving skills into an art and who will
compete for district and state honors, will be Laslie Hall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe L. Hall of
Teague road a member and officer in Pintlala Boys Senior Club, he will demonstrate his ability
through written tests and actual tractor driving.
Pat Dyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Dyer of Sprague, and Barbara Gilmore,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Gilmore of Dalraida, will compete with other county dairy foods
teams in demonstrating the importance of milk in the diet. Pat is a Ramer 4-H Club member and
Barbara is a Dalraida member.
Alice Todd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Todd of Hope Hull, and a member of
Pintlala Older Girls 4-H Club, will compete in the individual dairy foods demonstrators contest.
The girl with the best dairy foods overall 4-H record will win a trip to the National 4-H Congress
in Chicago.
Nancy Sowell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Sowell of Dalraida and a member of
Dalraida Girls 4-H Club, will compete for state honors in the talent contest and Florrie Ann
Hubbard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hubbard, Jr. of Wasden road, and a member of
Pintlala Older Girls Club, will compete for first place in the state dress revue. Winner of this
contest will receive a trip to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago.
Judy Crosby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.O. Crosby, Lamar road, and member of the
Pintlala Older Girls 4-H Club, will compete for state honors in the home lighting and
electrification contest. Incidentally, she will be the first girl to enter this contest.
Bob Bradford, son of Minister and Mrs. Robert Bradford sr. of Ramer, and a member of
Ramer Senior Boys 4-H Club, will compete for first place in the state cooperative essay and
public speaking contest. Bob won the county and district contests. The state winner will receive
a trip to the National Institute of Cooperatives.

TOUR OF PASTURES, MILKING CLINIC SET DURING WEEK

A pasture tour for beef cattlemen, a series of milking clinics for dairymen, and activities
at a number of churches high light events in rural Montgomery County this week.
The pasture tour, scheduled for Wednesday, will begin at 9 a.m. from Hooper’s
stockyards on Mobile highway. Before noon, when the tour is concluded, the cattlemen will see
and hear discussions on Bahia, Dallis, Coasla Bermuda and Johnson grass, and witness
demonstrations on weed control and the establishment of clover in grass sods. All interested
cattlemen are invited by Haynes Green, Montgomery County Cattlemen’s Association president,
to make the tour.
The first milking clinic will be held Tuesday at the L. D. Carlisle dairy farm on Vaughn
road. The second will be Thursday at the W. O. Evans dairy farm on Cantelou road and the third
will be on Friday at the Joe L. Hall dairy on Teague road. All three will begin at 9:30 a.m. The
clinics will be confined to milking procedures and production. L. W. Grogan is chairman of the
clinic committee.
CHURCH ACTIVITIES: High lighting the church events will be the quarterly meeting
of the Montgomery Baptist Association WMU Tuesday at Pintlala Baptist Church when several
hundred members will gather for a program and basket lunch. Mrs. Robert McDowell Jr., of
Montgomery, WMU president, will preside, and Mrs. Morris Todd, Pintlala WMS president, will
be chairman of the hostess group. Guest speaker will be the state president, Mrs. Albert J. Smith
of Monroeville.
Revival services are being held this week nightly as follows: Brewer Memorial Baptist
Church, Cecil, 7:45 p.m., Dr. Henry Lyon, guest speaker; Liberty Church of Christ, 7:45 p.m.,
Minister Furman Cauthen, Silver Springs, Md., guest speaker; Center Point Church of Christ,
7:30 p.m., Minister Fizhugh Ellington, guest speaker; Hill’s Chapel, 8 p.m., the Rev. Oliver N.
Murphree, pastor, speaker.
A vacation Bible school is being held daily at Pinedale Baptist Church and a vacation
Bible school which started last week at Dalraida Baptist Church is being continued this week.
Other events scheduled for this week are:
RABIES CLINICS: The last of the rabies clinics for 1962 will be held this week, and all
dogs not vaccinated at the clinic or by a private veterinarian before Sept. 1 will be subject to
capture by the inspectors and removal to the dog pound. The schedule for this week is
announced as follows by Dr. Guy Phelps Jr., county rabies inspector:
FRIDAY: Flowers school, 8 to 11 a.m.; Eastbrook fire station, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.;
Morningview School, 2 to 6 p.m.
SATURDAY: Capitol Heights Elementary School, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The WMS of Pine Level Baptist Church will meet at 3 p.m. at the church. Attention is
called to the change in time.
Jack Naish of Morningview Baptist Church will conduct the devotional service at the
courthouse at 7:40 a.m.

Woodland Circle will meet at 9:30 a.m.
Mount Carmel MYF will meet at 7:45 p.m. at the church.
A special prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church for the
revival beginning July 22.

EASTERN STAR ORDER PLANS INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS

Plans have been completed by Etta B. Smith Chapter, No. 290, Order of Eastern Star, for
a public meeting Tuesday night at Ramer for installation of new officers.
The meeting will be at 8 p.m. at Lodge Hall.
Mrs. Beulah Chancey will be installed as worthy matron and other elective officers will
be installed as follows: C. M. Brooks, worthy patron; Mrs. Margaret Hicks, associate matron;
Larry Menefee, associate patron; Mrs. Betty Menefee, conductress; Mrs. Joan Collier, associate
conductress; Mrs. Mary Virginia Milligan (reelected), secretary; Cecil Barnes (reelected),
treasurer; Mrs. Katherine DuBois, trustee.
Appointive officers to be installed are: Mrs. Mattie Brooks, chaplain; Mrs. Mary Glenn
Mills, marshal; Mrs. Katherine DuBois, organist; Mrs. Emily Rials, Adah; Mrs. Rebecca Dorsey,
Ruth; Mrs. Doris Zuidheak, Esther; Mrs. Opal Browder, Martha; Mrs. Peggy Hubbard, Electa;

Mrs. Frances Gorris will be the installing officer and Dr. J. L. Thompson will give the
obligation. Mrs. Florence Newsom, grand secretary, will serve as chaplain and Mrs. Ila
Thompson will serve as marshal. Mrs. Ruth Pearce will be organist. All the installing officers
are from Montgomery.
AROUND THE COUNTY: Allen Dees of Mount Meigs, district 4-H vice president, will
go to Selma Friday to talk to 4-h members attending the annual Dallas County 4-H Clubs picnic.
Montgomery County Angus cattle breeders are expected to attend the annual Alabama
Angus Field Day at Auburn Friday . . . The Alabama Polled Hereford Association board of
directors has scheduled the annual meeting for Oct. 31 in Montgomery. . . Tine W. Davis,
Todiway Acres, Pike Road, is the president. . . Mr. and Mrs. John R. Frye of Ramer are visiting
in Orlando, Fla. . . . Dr. Haygood Cosby of New Orleans visited his mother, Mrs. C. P. Cosby,
in Ramer Saturday enroute to Sylacauga to conduct a revival.

The Hope Hull Methodist Church worship committee will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the

WEDNESDAY
A two-hour pasture tour for cattle farmers of the Fleta, Mount Carmel, Sellers area will
begin at Sellers store in Fleta at 1:30 p.m. to study pasture crops best suited to that section of the
county.
A milking clinic will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Hall Bros. dairy No. 11 (Brody
and Easterling).
Family night will be held at Snowdoun Methodist Church at 7 p.m.
Pike Road Good neighbors Club will hold the annual picnic and covered dish supper at 7
p.m. at Gilder’s Pool. Members and their families are invited to come in the afternoon and swim
before supper. The club will furnish drinks but members will bring desserts.
Selbrook Civic Association will sponsor a barbecue at Selbrook on Old Selma road from
10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

COUNTY FARM BUREAU SETS ANNUAL MEETING FOR AUG. 18

The annual meeting of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau has been scheduled for
Aug. 18. Joe L. Hall, president, announced.
The program and election of officers and directors will be held at the State Farm Bureau
building on Southern Bypass. The barbecue, which is annually a part of the meeting, will be at
Pinedale Clubhouse on Woodley road.
One ticket will be given each member attending the barbecue. Tickets for guests may be
purchased at the door. No tickets will be mailed out as in previous years.
The program will be announced upon completion.
COURTHOUSE TIDBITS: James E. Fuller, Forest Park Baptist Church, will conduct
the devotional service in the Extension Service auditorium Tuesday at 7:40 a.m.
AROUND THE COUNTY: Latest reports on army worms are from N. L. Johnson of
Snowdoun who says they have attacked his hay crops. Like others, he did not know they were
there until he planned to cut his hay and found only stems, but salvaged what he could by cutting
immediately. . . Mrs. Etta B. Smith, Chapter of Eastern Star at Ramer was named, died July 6 at
the age of 85. . . Lip stick stains on linens may be removed by rubbing them with butter, then
with dry absorbent cotton and washing with soap and water. . . The annual revival at Snowdoun
Methodist Church will be held Aug. 19-24 with services daily at 7:30 p.m. by the Rev. B. B.
McCurley, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Demopolis. . . Snowdoun Woman’s Club will
hold the annual community family picnic Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. a the clubhouse. . . All families of the
community are invited to attend and bring picnic supper. . . Members of the committee in charge
are: Mrs. C. M. Stowers, chairman, Mrs. Stanley Boswell, Mrs. E. P. Young, Mrs. Floyd Porter,

community with services daily at 7:45 p.m. by the Rev. Karl Stringfellow, pastor of Frazer
Memorial Methodist Church, Montgomery. Special music is planned for each service with Miss
Jean Mosley, organist, and Mrs. John S. Sellers, pianist.
Vacation Bible school is being held this week at Mount Carmel Methodist Church. Mrs.
Ruth Ward is in charge.

CHURCH ACTIVITIES FEATURE FOR COUNTY DURING AUGUST

Church activities will have the spotlight in rural Montgomery County in August.
Mount Carmel Methodist Church has four young people attending camp at Blue Lake this
week. Tommie Guy and Guy Scaife are attending junior camp at Dogwood Campsite and Gayle
Scaife and Carolyn Scaife are attending junior high camp at Pine wood Campsite.
Accompanying them is the pastor, the Rev. Edwin R. Sells.
The MYF of Mount Carmel has planned a Youth Activities Week for Aug. 20-24 and
classes will be held daily from 7 to 9:30 p.m. They will include a worship period, study,
refreshments, projects and recreation. Resource leaders for the week are Tom Alford, L. E.
Ward and the pastor.
On Aug. 12, L. R. (Bob) Couch Jr., Methodist layman of Montgomery will supply for the
pastor, who, with his family, will be attending the Methodist Assembly at Lake Junaluska, N.C.
On Aug. 19, the young people who attended camp at Blue Lake will make reports on
their activities, and special music will be by Miss Mary Elizabeth Milner and Mrs. Martha
Sanders, guest musicians. The pastor will again be in the pulpit.
The youth of Mount Carmel church report making enough on a car wash to pay their
pledge on the building fund and the pastor reports that the Division of National Missions of the
Methodist Board of Missions has made an outright gift of $500 to the building program. The
church has recently completed an expansion program that included new classrooms, kitchen
facilities, restrooms, and an office for the pastor.
Plans are to install another folding door soon in Fellowship Hall so that it can be turned
into three classrooms, which will complete this particular project. However, many small
furnishings are still needed for the kitchen and rest rooms, and gifts to fill these needs will be
most acceptable.
A story and picture of the new educational building was featured in the July 25 issue of
the Alabama Christian Advocate.
Pine Level Baptist Church is having revival services this week with sermons daily at 7:30
p.m. by the Rev. H. T. Karn Jr. of Ramer.
Revival services are also being held this week at Pinedale Baptist Church each day at
7:45 p.m.
Annual homecoming is planned for Aug. 19 at Friendship Baptist Church and a revival
will follow with services daily at 7:30 by the Rev. Paul Gibson of Columbia, S.C.
A revival meeting will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church at LeGrand the week
of Aug. 19-24 with services at night only by the Rev. Arch McNair of Montgomery.
Revival services will be held at Snowdoun Methodist Church Aug. 19-24, with the Rev.
John C. Carmichael, pastor of LaFayette Street Methodist Church, Dothan, preaching each
evening. The Rev. John Bryan will assist and Gordon Carlson, pastor of Pine Flat Presbyterian
Church, will lead the singing.
LaPine Baptist Church will have a revival the week of Aug. 26-31, with Dr. Henry L.
Lyon of Montgomery guest speaker. The Rev. A. L. Byrd is pastor.
Annual communion day will be observed at Pisgah Primitive Baptist Church Aug. 26.
A vacation Bible school was completed Friday at Ramer Methodist Church with the
award of certificates to 83 children. As special favors, A. C. Felton, Sunday School
superintendent, made balls and bats for all the junior boys, lamp stands for the senior boys to use
in making electric lamps, and rolling pins for the girls. Mrs. Whit Athey Jr. and Mrs. Enoch
Rawls were directors, and Mrs. Charles Davis was in charge of the awards program.

The 29th annual stockholders meeting of the Montgomery Production Credit Association
will be held Aug. 23 at the Alabama Farm Bureau building on Southern Boulevard.
The program will begin at 10 a.m. with Dr. Fred Robertson, Auburn University Extension
Service director, the featured speaker. Also addressing the group will be F. S. Schneider of the
Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of New Orleans.
The directors will make a report of their stewardship for the past year and give the plans
for the future. The secretary - treasurer, James H. Godwin, will give a comprehensive report of
the association’s financial position and progress.
One new director will be elected for a three-year term.

MAGNOLIA SHORES FORMS PROPERTY OWNERS GROUP

The Magnolia Shores Property Owners Association has been organized with Maj. Vernon
L. Rozelle of Maxwell AFB as chairman and a 15-member board of directors to govern the
association.
Magnolia Shores is a private resort area between Highland Home and LaPine, a short
distance from Highway 331. Recently, the 200 - acre lake and roads were turned over to the
property owners by the developers, and the association purchased the concession stand and lot
and the boat ramp lot.
The concession stand, bath houses and recreation room have been repainted, barbecue
pits and sun shelters are under construction, and future plans call for paving the parking area and
planting shrubs and flowers.
At present, there are 260 lot owners with some owners having several lots. The
association has no lots for sale but persons interested in purchasing lots may contact those who
own more than one.
In order to finance improvements, the Magnolia Shores Property Owners Association has
announced plans for a chicken barbecue on Sept. 9 at the resort, the $1 barbecue ticket to entitle
the purchaser to enjoy the beach as well. Serving will be from noon until 2:30 p.m. The
association will give as an attendance prize a half-acre lot suitable for a beach house.
The resort has been approved by the State Health Dept., and has electric and telephone
service, is on a U.S. mail route and a school bus route.
Thirty-five houses are completed and a number of others under construction. The lake,
fed by fresh water streams, provides boating, skiing, fishing and swimming. Some property
owners are using their resort houses for permanent residences.

HOUSEHOLD INNOVATION POPULAR AT FAIR

The home department, an innovation with this year’s South Alabama Fair, is proving
popular with homemakers in Montgomery and other counties, W. R. Lynn, Fair manager,
reports.
Classifications are so varied there is one for almost any phase of homemaking. The
woman or girl who delights in baking may enter breads, cakes or cookies. If turn to food
preservation, she may exhibit canned fruits and vegetables, preserves, pickles, or jellies.
If she has a turn for sweets, candies may be entered. Women interested in sewing may
enter household linens, wearing apparel for adults, children and infants.
There are also classifications for crochet and knitting, rugs, ceramics, china painting,
basket weaving, metal craft and even old fashioned piece work quilts still made in many homes.
Lynn asks that persons planning to enter items in the Home Department send in their
entry blanks not later than Oct. 1. The entries will be received later.
Those wishing entry blanks may write the South Alabama Fair, P. O. Box 1653,
Montgomery.
The Home Department will be open on Oct. 3-4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to receive articles
for exhibition. The deadline for entering articles will be Oct. 4.

The meeting, called by the president, Mrs. James Geesey of Pike Road, will be held at
1:30 p.m. at the Central Alabama Crippled Children’s Clinic and Rehabilitation Center on
Southern Boulevard.
One of the major items will be to set up plans for the observance of Achievement Day in
October. Reports will also be made by committees and overall plans for 1963 will be mapped.
Council officers are Mrs. Geesey, president; Mrs. Jack Hailey Jr., first vice president;
Mrs. Malcolm Hall, second vice president; Mrs. Briggs Sansom, third vice president; Mrs. E. P.
Young, secretary; Mrs. H. H. Taylor, treasurer; Mrs. W. J. Wible, parliamentarian; Mrs. W. S.
Newell Sr., chaplain.
New officers for a two-year period will be elected on Achievement Day.
BOOKMOBILE REPORT: Circulation for the bookmobile during the summer months
was 18,029 or 3,131 more than the number of books circulated in the summer of 1961, Mrs.
Tommie Green, county librarian, reports . . . The figures by months are: June, 5,353; July,
6,361; August, 6,315 . . . At present, the subscribers number 851 families with 2,042 individuals
. . . In August, the library accessioned 211 new books and filled 606 requests.
