Image-based + blogging: Why?

Image-based blogging inspires great ideas Blogging is a sure-fire way of engaging students

because they are publishing for an audience beyond their own classroom

Even reluctant writers enjoy writing in pairs Approach uses ‘writing partners’ sharing Blogs feature comments by author Deb Abela Bloggers also appreciate each other’s ideas 5 writing tasks: one every week for 5 weeks Feel free to use the tasks at your school, in a

blog of your own, such as an Edmodo.com blog

Cyber safety & blogging preparations

Find out which students are blocked from appearing in the school newsletter because of a media ban / custodial dispute

Train all students never to use their real surnames online – they may use fake first names, tell you these

Train all students not to give their address and other identifying details

Explain about ‘flagging’ problems – tell teacher if any problems occur – explain ‘moderated’ blogs

Prepare writing in Word documents beforehand – copy & paste these into blog

Teaching occurs first - away from screens

Read a great example first: As with all good teaching, show students excellent writing featuring the writing focus for the task – modelled, guided, independent

Writing focus options: Show not tell, actions & expressive verbs, dialogue to show dynamics, show a person’s essence through their behaviour, clothing, reactions, physical appearance – so readers can read between the lines, by following writers’ clues

Share writing aloud: Teach students how to work in partners & give feedback that is positive and encouraging
