The Scholarly Squire Date: September 3, 2019
H opefully, you and your family and friends enjoyed the Labor Day weekend. Whether you enjoyed a picnic, swimming, camping, watching sporting events, movies, or relaxing with your favorite television show, the three-day weekend was a
gentle reminder that we are moving into the fall season and many, many school activ-
ities. Say good-bye to Summer, 2019
At Northfield, the start of our school year has been absolutely amazing. The students
are smiling each day, establishing routines, learning, finding new friends, and build-
ing terrific relationships with adults and peers. To help support our students, North-
field, as well as all the other Nordonia elementary buildings, have fully instituted PAX
and Class Huddle. Designed to meet the social-emotional needs of all children, these
programs are either research-based or specifically designed to meet Nordonia stu-
dents’ needs. Throughout the academic year, students will develop competencies in
pro-social behaviors; including, conflict management, emotional regulation, im-
proved self-esteem, respecting differences, and a whole host of age-appropriate
themes. When you visit our building for Open House later this month, the teachers
will share more specifics about our programming in these areas.
Our student lunch visitation program begins on September 3. Parents are welcome to
have lunch during their child’s scheduled time. We kindly ask that you limit visitors to
two, please. Also, note that you must bring a photo ID with you as you check into the
office each visit. Once lunch is over, we ask that parents refrain from walking their
child back to class. Also, be mindful of photographs. The school doesn’t have authori-
ty to take every child’s picture. Some families have opted out of group pictures.
Northfield’s Open House program is scheduled for Thursday, September 19, from
5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Mark your calendars now for this informative school event.
In order to accommodate all families, there will be established times for each grade
level. A specific schedule is forthcoming later this week.
Finally, I certainly hope our tech-savvy families have downloaded our NF Smart
Phone App. This brand new feature sets Northfield apart from m any oth-
er schools in the region. This free phone app. is filled with many features; including,
staff contacts, lunch menus, a school and district calendar, a photo-sharing feature,
important phone numbers, and so much more. Over the course of the year, we will be
introducing new features such as a YouTube channel, contests, and other informative
links. A flyer is included in this publication (page 9) so that you can be reminded of
how to download this free technology. Don’t forget about Twitter options, too.
@NFSquirePride. A majority of teachers use Twitter throughout the week to share
news.
Respectfully,

I am excited for another great school year at
Northfield Elementary! My name is Leslie
Witt and I offer school counseling services to
our students. I work with students, parents,
and school team members supporting stu-
dents to develop the skills they need to do
well! I have been visiting all classrooms for
“Meet the Counselor” lessons to introduce myself and talk about the role of the school counselor. I
have also had a wonderful time meeting with our new students during “Lunch with the Counselor” vis-
its.
School counselors work with students individually and in small groups and present classroom guidance
lessons to teach and promote skills that will support students’ academic, personal/social and career de-
velopment. Throughout the school year I provide classroom guidance lessons to all grade levels on top-
ics such as Growth Mindset, Empathy, Managing Emotions, Self-Regulation, Problem Solving and Ca-
reer Awareness. Small group sessions are also offered on an as needed basis. Some groups that are of-
fered are Friendship, Building Self-Esteem, Managing Worry/Stress, and Changing Families. Small
groups are designed to help children learn about personal strengths, develop coping strategies, and es-
tablish effective peer relationships.
Please contact me if you have any questions about school counseling services. I can be reached by
phone at 330-908-6243 or email at leslie.witt@nordoniaschools.org. I look forward to a great year
working with the students of Northfield Elementary!
