‘Food for thought’
•Why farm when you cannot guarantee your output?• Guess work farming is what over 90% of
farmers in Nigeria do.• They do not know the nutritional
strength or, weakness of their farmland (soil).• They just plant their seed because they
have a land to plant on.
More Food for Thought
• They await the harvest not even sure of what yield they will get.
• This explains why our farmers have remained poor and impoverished, with low yield per hectare for crops planted.
• To reverse this trend of uncertainty and, put our farmers on the path to prosperity, we need to use the technology available to us and, provide the solution for all farmers in Nigeria.
Precision Farming Services in Nigeria, using satellite technology
(GPS) to create maps that will show variability in the soil.
Where to start Searching?
Root system is way of “shopping”
for nutrients and water
If the soil gets depleted of nutrients and water, the crops will not produce.
How to use Precision Farming • Identify the Land (Any Land)• Map the perimeter of the land using Global
Positioning System (GPS).• Take soil samples at GPS grid co-ordinates
plotted by GPS System, across the land• Bag and Tag soil samples with co-ordinates
stated.• Send soil sample to ALASA approved
Laboratory for testing.
Soil sampling and Testing Organagram
Managing nature to bring down the risk in any farming Project.
• Soil analysis will help managing soil fertility• Soil physical properties will determine crop
potential, tillage practices as well as farm layouts• Plant analysis will help to evaluate and manage the
nutrient status of a crop during the growing season• Water analysis will determine the risk involved in
irrigation• Above information will help the farm manager to
build a proper environment for soil micro organisms to work effectively as a team to increase yield !!
Report and Recommendations
• A detailed and comprehensive report with maps is then produced showing:
• Nutrients in the soil• Nutrient deficiency• What the land can grow• Recommendations on how to alter any
deficiencies in the land so it can grow various crops and ensure high yield.

Precision Farming gets to the root of the problem.
• Precision farming is about using technology to make life easier for farmers.
• Farmers feed the soil, the soil feeds the plants and, the plants feed the people.

Summary• Precision farming is in line with the
Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA) of the Federal Government of Nigeria and, will help in quickly realising 20 million metric tons of food production by 2015.
• In delivering on precision farming nationwide we can create ONE MILLION new jobs for Nigerians.
• SGS already has the technology and expertise in Nigeria to deliver this service across Nigeria.
