HISTORYThe area was founded in 1659 by Major John Mason, military leader

of the Connecticut Colony, and the Reverend James Fitch. At this timethe two men were part of a group of Old Saybrook settlers who sailedup the Thames River in search of a site for a new settlement. They pur-chased a nine mile square plot from Chief Uncas of the Mohegans forthe sum of 70 pounds and settled in the same area now known asNorwichtown.

The major occupation in the early years was farming. In 1648 thefirst public landing was established at the confluence of the Thames,Yantic, and Shetucket Rivers, at a spot still called Chelsea Landing.Here the industry of ship building was started for trading with the WestIndies. By 1774 Norwich was the second largest in Connecticut.

The tremendous water power of the Yantic and Shetucket Riversmade Norwich an ideal area for manufacturing during the nineteenthcentury. Steamships and the railroad linked Norwich with the surround-ing areas and allowed the industrial prosperity of the area to reach toBoston, New York, and the rest of the world.

The area continued to be a leader in commerce and industry duringthe Civil War and up to the stock market crash of 1929. That, and thehurricane of 1938 hit the area very hard.

A shift to a regional economy became evident following World War II.Today, however, Norwich is again host to a wide variety of industriesfrom all over the world.
